Following is the full text of President Ohtsubo’s interview with the Office of Corporate History video, recorded at the Eco Ideas House, Panasonic Center Tokyo on April 5th 2010. Could you please tell us about your vision looking to the 100th anniversary of our founding? Our vision is to be the No. 1 Green Innovation Company in the Electronics Industry. Chairman Nakamura is perhaps the first person who explained recent human progress in the following way: The 19th century was the century of the Industrial Revolution, the 20th century was the century of the IT revolution, and the 21st century is the century of the environmental revolution. According to Chairman Nakamura, the impact of the environmental revolution could be even more profound than that of either of the last two revolutions. As a backdrop to this environmental revolution, I believe that people in advanced countries surely wish to maintain their affluent lifestyles. And those in developing countries are seeking similar lifestyles. Such hopes inevitably result in a greater burden on the global environment. So how then can we keep in harmony with the global environment? How can we continue to have sustainable development? This is one of the great challenges which we face today. At this turning point in history, we must give serious thought to the purpose of our corporate activities. What is the reason for our company's existence? Fortunately, we can always look to our management philosophy set down by our founder, Konosuke Matsushita. It tells us that a company is a public entity of society. We must contribute to the progress of society and to enriching people’s lives through manufacturing. Following this management philosophy, what is it we must do in this age of the environmental revolution? Focusing our efforts on the environment, we must lead the world in functioning as a Green Innovation Company. In this way, I believe that we can implement our management philosophy, being true to our Panasonic DNA. You're saying that we must put into practice our management philosophy in the context of conditions today, right? When our founder was formulating his management philosophy, the most important challenge for people at that time was to escape poverty. A comparable global challenge today is the challenge of maintaining harmony with the global environment. Therefore, we aim to be the No. 1 Green Innovation Company in the Electronics Industry by 2018. Could you tell us more about what it means to be a Green Innovation Company? As part of our corporate endeavors, we have already been carrying out various environmental activities, activities such as treeplanting campaigns, CO 2 emission-saving activities, and activities to preserve biodiversity. But becoming a G r e e n I n n o v a t i o n Fumio Ohtsubo President – Panasonic Company implies that our environmental efforts must be integral to the growth of our business. In the past, our role has been rather defensive, as we focused mostly on the preservation of the environment. Moving forward, we wish to be more active, and have our business play a direct role in maintaining the global environment. This is the implication of our becoming www.ifa-international.org IFA International • Monday, 30 th August 2010 35
