TAIWAN - Sparkling wines remain a niche category, with the sector largely driven by Champagne, with just 80,000 9-litre cases consumed in 2014, a 4.9% increase on 2013. Growth is forecast to continue by 15% between 2015 and 2019. Prosecco is the leading sparkling wine in Taiwan, with Italy the second largest sparkling wine importer after France. French traditional method sparkling wine on rise With a major rise in sales year-onyear in 2015 (+16.3% volume and +8.08% in value) French AOP sparkling wines – other than champagnes – are experiencing a veritable boom at the moment. Confirming the trend, Aguila Crémant is present at Vinexpo Hong Kong armed not only with data to support the case for the traditional method bubbly from France, but also the results of recent blind tests that showed Aguila was the preferred product compared to leading competitors in the market. Aguila’s catchphrase, “Creator of Effervescence” reflects a young and dynamic feel, with the bottle’s modern design combining luxury and elegance. Getting a traditional method French sparkling wine “right” comes down to the alchemy of a terroir with character: situated between the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees, Aguila Crémant offers an extraordinary range of expression. Aguila brut is a perfectly mastered blend of wines from the clay-limestone and standstone hills of the region’s vineyards, where three grape varieties marry harmoniously in the following proportions: 65% Chardonnay, 25% Chenin and 10% Mauzac. VINIFICATION AND MATURATION A low yield of less than 50 Hl/Ha allows the grapes to be harvested at optimum maturity, giving good concentration of the different aromas. The wine is then vinified and assembled before a second fermentation in the bottle. Maturation on lees lasts between 12 & 18 months, then the wine is stored in order to favour the development of secondary aromas and the finesse of the bubbles. TASTING NOTES Eye: The nice pale yellow robe is highlighted by fine and persistent bubbles with a delicate mousse. Nose: The dominant Chardonnay brings notes of white flowers such as acacia, as well as fruity notes of pear and peach. Mouth: The unctuousness and freshness of this vintage brings balance and length in the mouth. THE GUARANTEE OF QUALITY The fact this is an AOC ”Crémant de Limoux”, produced using the Traditional Method and matured between 12 to 18 months is a reassuring guarantee. Aguila is working hard to push its brand, thanks to major advertising campaigns and in-store PoS display tools. Following the organic accreditation of a large proportion of its vineyards in 2014, Champagne Drappier aims to be the first Champagne House in the world to achieve a net zero carbon footprint. Over ten years, Drappier has been working on sourcing sustainable energies and to date, 45% of the electricity used by the House is produced by solar panels. By 2017, that number will increase to 75%. Plans to aggressively reduce fuel consumption to a minimum over the next 5 years have also begun.
