Caladenia Lindl.), Pfitzer’s choice of Caladenia flava as a typical representative of
that genus was totally compliant with the historical interpretation of the taxon, in
particular that originating firstly from Brown (1810) and then Lindley (1840) where
he created additional new sections for the genus, viz . § Calonema and § Pentisea.
Significantly, Pfitzer’s thesis pre-dates the introduction of a type concept in the
International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN) and therefore Art. 7.11 ICBN
that requires the word “type” (typus) or an equivalent be included does not apply.
Since Pfiter’s choice is not in conflict with the original protologue for Caladenia (Art.
9.17), then it still stands in favour of the later choices by Hallé (1977), for which no
arguments in support of his choice were given, nor that of Clements (1989), where a
reason for the choice was given . The fact that Pfitzer’s choice in two other sections of
Caladenia are in conflict with the original protologue is an irrelevancy concerning the
actual choice of C. flava in the case of Caladenia sens. str.(= Caladenia R.Br. sect.
