There is only one step left, and in 2022, Kaunas
and Kaunas district will become European
Capital of Culture. The European Capital of
Culture initiative, launched in 1985, is one of the
most successful projects in the European Union.
More than 50 cities have already been awarded
this honorable title. The status of the European
Capital of Culture, which we have been striving
for since 2015, is ambitious, planned, and binding.
It is an invitation to co-create the city of our future
and its cultural life. At the same time, it is an
invitation to discover and reveal the uniqueness
of the place, strengthen the connection with
other cultures, and meet them in Kaunas. The
title is essential for the city and the journey
towards it – it is already happening and leads us
all to a big celebration in 2022. It is a journey from
the temporary capital to the contemporary one
– to a confident, creative, and open European
city. A place where its history lives on, and at
the same time, the future is actively built. It is a
journey for all of us - city and district residents,
regardless of age, profession, origin, or views.
