Boundaries of architecture and nature, photo by Eglė Kliučinskaitė, Kudrionys, 2023
The process of observation encourages slowness as the pace of time is different
in an abandoned world. There is value to be found in the sense of security, uncertainty or
even anxiety lurking around every corner of these buildings. The feeling of being hidden
among hidden objects and the elements of nature, the sensation of wind and warmth, the
sound of dripping water and silence, the stillness, the shadows – all this makes it possible
to experience the decay of time and the touch of nature on humans and architecture. Being
alone in abandoned buildings becomes a kind of meditation and self-reflection.

The inevitability of change encourages a deeper appreciation of the present
moment and reminds us of the fragility and temporality of disappearance. Here, the
concept of time expands. Time spent observing and visiting in recent months, the global
time and context, the history of the building, the unknown time of visitors on holiday... Time
is fragmented into many layers, perspectives and durations. This allows us to pause and
think about timeless architecture, the role of architecture and even the architect. It forces
us to look at the difference between natural decay and the process of artificial destruction.
