In <strong>die</strong> verlede was <strong>die</strong> Landbou<br />
Navorsingsraad <strong>die</strong> enigste onafhanklike<br />
instansie wat kultivars van<br />
saadmaatskappye in <strong>die</strong> GWK-<br />
gebied met mekaar vergelyk het.<br />
Die behoefte het by produsente<br />
en saadmaatskappye ontstaan om<br />
<strong>die</strong> aantal proewe wat onafhanklik<br />
gedoen word, te vermeerder.<br />
As `n landboubesigheid met <strong>die</strong><br />
prioriteit om `n <strong>die</strong>ns aan sy produsente<br />
te lewer, is GWK trots om<br />
<strong>hier</strong>by betrokke te wees.<br />
Mielieproewe is weer eens <strong>die</strong> afgelope<br />
seisoen oor <strong>die</strong> GWK-gebied in<br />
samewerking met <strong>die</strong> saadmaatskappye<br />
aangeplant en deurgevoer.<br />
Meto<strong>die</strong>k<br />
Tydens <strong>die</strong> 2011/<strong>2012</strong>-seisoen is<br />
vier wit en 25 geel basters geproef.<br />
In sommige streke is <strong>die</strong> basters<br />
Navorsing en Ontwikkeling<br />
opgedeel in GMO vrye aanplan-<br />
tings, Bt-aanplantings en Roundup<br />
(R)-aanplantings. Dit was om produsente<br />
te akkommodeer wat basters<br />
met spesifieke of geen tegnologie<br />
verkies.<br />
Die agtervoegsels is as volg:<br />
Roundup baster: R<br />
Bt baster: B<br />
Roundup + Bt baster (stack): BR<br />
Nuwe Bt-tegnologie: BR GEN<br />
GWK se landboukundiges was<br />
verantwoordelik <strong>vir</strong> <strong>die</strong> plantpro-<br />
ses, asook om <strong>die</strong> data korrek in<br />
te samel en te verwerk. Personeel<br />
van <strong>die</strong> saadmaatskappye was ook<br />
betrokke by <strong>die</strong> oesproses wat dit<br />
moontlik maak om vergelykings<br />
te tref voordat goedkeuring gegee<br />
word.<br />
Die normale produksiepraktyke van<br />
<strong>die</strong> produsent is gevolg. Die op-<br />
brengs van <strong>die</strong> basters is na 12.5%<br />
vog verwerk.<br />
Die data word eers <strong>vir</strong> publikasie<br />
beskikbaar gestel nadat <strong>die</strong> saadmaatskappye<br />
dit goedgekeur het.<br />
`n Laer stand proef (45000<br />
plante/ha) is ook in <strong>die</strong> Luckhoff-omgewing<br />
aangeplant. Die<br />
motivering was om `n produsent by<br />
te staan met <strong>die</strong> keuse van `n baster<br />
om aan te plant op `n land waar <strong>die</strong><br />
volle kwota water nie beskikbaar is<br />
nie. Die proef sal <strong>vir</strong> <strong>die</strong> 2013-seisoen<br />
herhaal word. Interessante data<br />
is reeds <strong>vir</strong> <strong>die</strong> <strong>2012</strong>-seisoen beskikbaar.<br />
Die eerste twee kontroles van <strong>die</strong><br />
Jacobsdal-proef verskil meer as<br />
<strong>die</strong> aanvaarde norm van 15% van<br />
<strong>die</strong> ander kontroles. Die proef is<br />
egter deur <strong>die</strong> saadmaatskappye<br />
aanvaar. Die volgende basters te<br />
Jacobsdal is moontlik benadeel deur<br />

31D21B. Die proef te Hopetown<br />
is nie geplant nie, maar sal weer<br />
<strong>die</strong> komende seisoen aangeplant<br />
word. By <strong>die</strong> proef te Douglas is met<br />
taksering bepaal dat daar `n opbrengsverlies<br />
van 1,5t/ha was weens<br />
haelskade. Verdere inligting word in<br />
Tabel 1 aangetoon.<br />
Gebruik van data<br />
Dit is voordelig <strong>vir</strong> produsente dat<br />
GWK as `n onafhaklike instansie <strong>die</strong><br />
evaluasie doen, aangesien vergelykings<br />
getref word met proefdata van<br />
<strong>die</strong> saadmaatskappye.<br />
Produsente kan <strong>die</strong> meerjarige<br />
data gebruik om af te lei hoe stabiel<br />
`n baster is. Wanneer basters oor<br />
seisoene/lokaliteite goed presteer,<br />
dui dit daarop dat <strong>die</strong> baster verskillende<br />
seisoene en gebiede goed kan<br />
hanteer en dus baie stabiel is.<br />
Dit gebeur soms dat `n baster slegs<br />
by een lokaliteit swak presteer. In só<br />
`n geval moet dit versigtig hanteer<br />
word aangesien ander faktore soos<br />
swakker kolle in <strong>die</strong> land moontlik `n<br />

rol kon gespeel het.<br />
Dit is dus uiters belangrik om<br />
prestasie ook oor seisoene en<br />
lokaliteite te meet. Die proewe <strong>die</strong>n<br />
verder as <strong>die</strong> eerste toonvenster <strong>vir</strong><br />
nuwe basters en kan <strong>die</strong> produsent<br />
dus <strong>die</strong> prestasie meet alvorens dit<br />
op groot skaal aangeplant word.<br />
Die prestasie van konvensionele<br />
basters kan ook vergelyk word met<br />
<strong>die</strong> van geneties gemanipuleerde<br />
basters (GMO) alvorens besluit word<br />
om `n premie <strong>vir</strong> GMO te betaal<br />
in<strong>die</strong>n praktyke dit nie vereis nie.<br />
`n Hoë risiko van stamboorders kan<br />
aangespreek word deur Bt-basters te<br />
plant.<br />
Wees bedag daarop dat toevlugs-<br />
oorde korrek aangeplant moet word.<br />
Dit is ook nodig om op te let <strong>vir</strong><br />
kelkskade op <strong>die</strong> jongste kelkblare<br />
wat deur jong stamboorders aangerig<br />
word. Vir <strong>die</strong> beheer van pro-<br />
bleemonkruide moet R- of BR-basters<br />
eerder aangeplant word.<br />
Geneties gemanipuleerde basters<br />
(GMO) mag ook nie teenaan<br />
konvensionele basters geplant word<br />
in<strong>die</strong>n `n premie <strong>vir</strong> konvensionele<br />
basters ver<strong>die</strong>n word nie.<br />

Om interpretasie te vergemaklik<br />
word elke baster se prestasie <strong>vir</strong> <strong>die</strong><br />
afgelope twee seisoene ook as `n<br />
indeks aangedui.<br />
`n Indeks van 100 beteken dat <strong>die</strong><br />
baster <strong>die</strong>selfde as <strong>die</strong> gemiddeld<br />
van <strong>die</strong> proef presteer het. `n Indeks<br />
van 107 beteken dus dat <strong>die</strong> baster<br />
7% beter as <strong>die</strong> proefgemiddeld<br />
presteer het. `n Indeks van 92 beteken<br />
weer dat <strong>die</strong> baster 8% swakker<br />
as <strong>die</strong> proefgemiddeld presteer het.<br />
As `n produsent mielies plant, moet<br />
dit <strong>die</strong> hoogste opbrengs met <strong>die</strong><br />
laagste risiko bereik.<br />
Hou by wat werk. Basters wat oor<br />
`n paar jaar goed presteer is <strong>die</strong><br />
beste keuse.<br />
Nuwe basters moet ook deel uitmaak<br />
van <strong>die</strong> aanplanting, maar net<br />
om <strong>vir</strong> <strong>die</strong> toekoms te toets.<br />
