SINTERKERST
Seen with the lens of a Latin American
So I received an invitation to an event on a Sunday evening, in
the middle of December, at 8:00 PM for Sinter-something (I’m
sorry but that’s how I read it the first time), and I thought: “really?,
these Dutch people must love this guy called Sinterklaas
since they are going to party on a Sunday, cool!!!”.
Then, my dear teammate a.k.a. Tosty-
King, tells me that we need to write a
poem and buy a gift for 20 girls with
a budget of 10 euros, and I thought:
“really?, these Dutch people must be
crazy if they think you can buy gifts
for 20 girls with that money”. Well
I hadn’t finished my intermediate-
Dutch course by that time (which by
the way, I failed), so I didn’t have to
worry about the poem but I still had to
worry about the ‘cadeau’. So picture
me the week before the event, writing
to some of the P5 guys asking them
about nice ideas for the gift and that
I’m clueless about what is expected in
the occasion. Saturday there I was, the
day before the event – you know, we
Latin Americans think: why doing your
stuff in advance when you can do it in
the last minute - still thinking, calling
Paul and Gert-Jan to get nice ideas…
well, in the end, I hope the ladies are
still enjoying their sex bell and their
head massager.
not normal for us) I was going to
celebrate that an old guy that looks
like Santa Claus, but it is not Santa, is
coming from Spain in a boat, with his
black helper, full of presents...yes, in
December, and yes, it’s not Santa…
and the black dude is not a slave, it’s
a helper (here is when you picture
the “what the F%* face” of my friend).
Well, only in that moment when I
checked my Facebook again, I realized
“I hope the ladies ar still enjoying teir
sex bell and their head massager”
The night before
the event, I was skyping with my
friend back in Colombia, telling her
that the next day (Sunday evening,
the event was also to celebrate
Christmas, and I thought: “really?, do
