Festivals & Events
Rotterdam Festivals coordinates Rotterdam’s events
policy. We bring together initiatives of festival organizers,
visitors, the city’s themes and wishes of residents.
This integrated approach enables us to reach a wide
audience and to give events more cultural, promotional
and economic value for Rotterdam.
New events policy
In January 2010 the Council of Rotterdam decided on
a more focused events policy, based on our proposal.
Its subtitle ‘Deeper into the city, further into the world’
shows what the focus will be over the next few years.
Together with our partners, we will concentrate on
themes that are closely linked to the city such as the
world port, young and diverse audiences, modern
architecture, internationally appealing culture and the
sports climate. Events that will reach deeper into the city
and, as far as key events are concerned, have an
international appeal.
The Tour de France, which we contributed to with an
additional cultural programme, was a magnificent
example of such an internationally appealing event.
The same goes for annual events such as the International
Film Festival Rotterdam, Wereldhavendagen,
the Rotterdam Philharmonic Gergiev Festival and
the Ortel Zomercarnaval.
Apart from these international key events, the successful
programmes at building sites were expanded in 2010:
