In practice standard PLCs are pretty reliable and if<br />
something goes wrong with them they just stop<br />
working with their outputs off.<br />
Double up the outputs and add some cross<br />
monitoring back to the inputs or some other item<br />
with logic such as a drive and you can have a<br />
pretty reliable system which is probably<br />
comparable to a safety relay.<br />
