It’s often a combination of little things not done that wind upcontributing to slow play and on-course traffic jams. Here are some tips formaking sure your pace of play is as brisk as it should be. Remember: pace ofplay isn’t about rushing your shots, it’s about being ready to take your shotwhen it’s your turn, and behaving efficiently on the course. Here’s How:1. Choose a set of tees appropriateto your skill level. Playing fromthe championship set of tees whenyou’re not really good enough todo so only adds strokes and time.2. Each member of a foursome (orany group) should proceed directlyto his or her ball. The groupshould not travel as a pack, goingto first to one ball, then the next, and so on.3. While walking (or riding) to yourball, use the travel time to beginthinking over your next shot - theyardarge, which club you’ll use,and so on. Begin preparing beforeyou get to your ball.4. If sharing a cart, don’t drive to thefirst ball, wait for the first player tohit, then head to the second ball.Drop the first player off at his ball, drive on ahead to the second ball. The first player should walk over tothe cart as the second player is playinghis shot.“Pace of play: Be prepared and beready to play”.5. When using a cart on a cart-pathonlyday, be sure to take a coupleof clubs with you when you walkfrom the cartto the ball. This way, youwon’t have toreturn to thecart if you discover you didn’t bringthe appropriate club.6. Carry a few extra tees, ball marksand a spare ball in your pockets soyou don’t have to return to yourgolf bag to retrieve them, shouldyou find yourself in need of one.7. When you think your shot mighthave landed out of bounds or be lost, immediately hit a provisional ball.Don’t walk ahead to search, only tohave to return to the original spotto replay a shot.8. Limit your search for lost balls. If you’re not following the rulesbe prepared and beready to playanyway, don’t spend more than aminute searching - or just immediatelyplay your provisional. (Ifyou are playing by the rules, wavethrough any group behind that isbeing held up by your search.)9. Never hold up play because you’rein the middle of a conversation.Put the conversation on hold, takeyour stroke, then continue the conversation.10. On the green, begin lining up yourputt and reading the break as soonas you reach the green. When it’syour turn to putt, be prepared tostep right up and take the stroke.11. Leave your bags or golf carts to theside of the green, and in the directionof the next tee, never in frontof the green.12. Never stand on or next to thegreen after holing out in order towrite down your score. Write itdown when you reach the next tee.13. If all else fails, try playing “readygolf,” which simply means that orderof play is based on who’s ready, not who’s away.Tips:1. Most experts say that a good pace ofplay not only increases enjoymentof the game, it can actually improveone’s game. Standing aroundon every shot allows the muscles tocool down or limbs to stiffen up. Abrisk pace can help keep a golferl o o s e a n dready to play.2. Pace of playcan be boileddown to twosimple phrases: be prepared and beready to play.3. Use the groups ahead of you andbehind you to guage your pace.If the group that teed off directlyin front of you is pulling away- putting a full hole’s distance betweenthem and your group - youneed to speed up. If there’s no onein front of you holding you up, butyou are holding up those behindyou, either speed up or allow thetrailing group to play through. From Brent Kelley, Your guide to golf24
