Our passion for the arts 

Op ons kantoor zijn we omringd door moderne 

en hedendaagse kunstwerken gemaakt door 

nationale en internationale kunstenaars. Voor 

ons creëert het een inspirerende werkomgeving 

waarbij we ons verbonden voelen met elkaar. 

Maar het betekent meer: omgeven zijn door 

kunst helpt ons elke dag beter te worden in wat 

we doen. Kunst biedt ruimte voor associatie. 

Voor creatief denken. En dat ziet u terug in 

originele en innovatieve oplossingen voor u. 

In our office we are surrounded by modern 

and contemporary artworks by Dutch and

Ik zit tegenover Maurice van Valen 

– advocaat bij Heron Legal – en we 

praten over een simpele, maar ook 

complexe vraag: waarom verzamelt 

Heron Legal kunst? 

Het is een meanderend gesprek, waarin we telkens 

afdwalen. Wat doe je als advocaat? Wat is de staat van 

de wereld? Hoe werk je? En, welke relaties heb je tot 

kunstenaars en de kunstmarkt? Tijdens het gesprek 

kijken we allebei naar een werk van de Nigeriaanse, in 

Antwerpen en Parijs woonachtige Otobong Nkanga. 

Maurice kijkt naar Steel to Rust – Segregation (2016), ik 

naar Tracing Confessions (2015). Gedurende het gesprek 

lijken de werken van Nkanga zelf antwoord te geven op 

de vraag naar het waarom van de kunstverzameling. 

De werken zijn zeer verschillend van aard. Steel to Rust 

is een textiel, dat als een schilderij aan de muur hangt 

– een abstract beeld uit stof. Het beeld is gebaseerd 

op aardoppervlakte patronen – kraters, barsten, zand 

en steen - uitgevoerd in aardkleuren, met zilverdraad 

als contrastkleur en strakke, koperen horizontale 

baleinen als contrastlijnen. Op de geweven stof zijn twee 

metalen platen aangebracht, met eenzelfde organische 

structuur, als mineralen die komen bovendrijven. 

Tracing Confessions bestaat uit twee forse tekeningen. 

Op een geabstraheerde landkaart van Zuid-Oost Azië, 

zijn cirkels getekend met daarin figuren, soms alleen 

lichaamsdelen of andere vormen. De cirkels zijn door 

lijnen verbonden en tekenen een internationaal netwerk. 

Onduidelijk is wat de inzet van het netwerk is. Brengt de 

tekening een productielijn in kaart, of een diaspora? Het 

is aan de kijker om een antwoord te formuleren. 

In de kamer waarin we zitten lijken de abstracte 

landkaart en de in stof geweven grondstructuren ver 

weg van de alledaagse advocatenpraktijk. In deze 

kamer voeren de medewerkers van Heron Legal 

veel en zeer verschillende gesprekken met klanten 

en onder elkaar. Tijdens die gesprekken is de rode 

draad vanzelfsprekend de vragen van hun klanten. De 

advocaten beoefenen er hun handwerk. Ze zoeken naar 

over- en inzicht in de wirwar aan perspectieven van 

hun klanten, partners of opponenten op een situatie en 

passen deze veelal in op het recht. Feiten zelf mogen 

eenduidig zijn, ze bestaan nooit op zichzelf en het is aan 

de advocaten om op oorspronkelijke en effectieve wijze 

de verschillende lezingen bij elkaar te brengen. Op het 

eerste zicht lijken de werken niet meer dan een decor 

voor de advocatenpraktijk. 

Maar tijdens het gesprek valt op hoe de kunstwerken op 

subtiele momenten interveniëren. De werken prikken 

zachtjes in de ogen van de aanwezigen en voorzien 

zwijgend wat gaande is van commentaar. Al zittend 

in de kamer, in al die verschillende situaties, in de 

korte momenten rust tussen alle gesprekken, bieden 

de werken zich aan. Alsof het werk een radiozender is 

met verschillende kanalen, roept het telkens andere 

associaties op. Dan weer mijmer je over de zilverdraad 

die Nkanga gebruikt en die doet denken aan de 

Afrikaanse, maar in zekere zin ook gewoon menselijke 

neiging naar ‘bling’. Dan weer blijven je ogen hangen op 

het roestende metaal, dat tegelijkertijd in hardheid zijn 

nut en industriële toepasbaarheid toont, evenals het zijn 

stoffige, roestige overtolligheid uitstraalt. Zwervend met 

je ogen over de tekeningen zie je de wereld als abstractie 

en vorm, maar ook menselijke relaties, afhankelijkheid 

en de impliciete aanwezigheid van mensen van elders 

in onze alledaagse gebruiksvoorwerpen. Ook de werken

telkens weer een andere constellatie van betekenis 

formeren. De haast onuitputtelijke gelaagdheid van de 

werken maakt dat je nooit bent uitgekeken. 

Bij Heron Legal helpen de kunstwerken de advocaten om 

feiten anders te lezen, om de veelheid aan interpretaties 

en de openheid van een situatie te koesteren. De kunst 

biedt de advocaten een soort dagelijkse, geestelijke 

gymnastiek, die je beoefent door simpelweg van tijd tot 

tijd je ogen en gedachtes te laten dwalen. De werken bij 

Heron Legal zijn daarmee veel meer dan ‘iets moois aan 

de muur’. De kunst schept een context die bijdraagt aan 

de kwaliteit van de dienstverlening. Immers, voor een 

creatieve oplossing hoef je vaak niet iets totaal nieuws 

te maken, maar moet je over de gave beschikken om de 

bestaande feiten opnieuw te lezen. Kunst helpt daarbij 

en prikkelt je op talloze momenten te blijven kijken om te 

zien wat anders verscholen blijft. 

Steven ten Thije (1980) is kunsthistoricus, conservator 

en auteur. Hij is verbonden aan het Van Abbemuseum 

als coördinator van de Europese museumconfederatie 

L’Internationale. In 2013 was hij medeoprichter van de 

denktank voor kunst en democratie ‘Steen in de vijver’.

I am seated across from Maurice van 

Valen, lawyer at Heron Legal, as we 

discuss a simple but complex question: 

why does Heron Legal collect art? 

Our talk is meandering as we divert constantly. As a lawyer, 

what does your practice entail? What is the state of affairs 

in the world? How does one work? And, what relations 

does one have with artists and the art market? During our 

conversation we each look at a different work by Otobong 

Nkanga, a Nigerian-born, Antwerp and Paris-based artist. 

Maurice observes Steel to Rust – Segregation (2016), while 

I ponder Tracing Confessions (2015). As we are talking, 

Nkanga’s works seem to answer the question of the reasons 

behind the art collection. 

The works are quite different in nature. Steel to Rust is a 

textile hanging from the wall like a painting – an abstract 

image made from fabric. The image is based on patterns 

of the earth’s surface – craters, cracks, sand and stone – 

executed in earthy colours with silver thread as a contrast, 

and straight, copper-coloured, horizontal ribs as contrasting 

lines. On the woven fabric two metal plates with a similar 

organic structure have been applied, like minerals pressed 

to the surface. Tracing Confessions consists of two hefty 

drawings. On an abstracted map of South-East Asia 

circles are drawn with figures, body parts and other forms 

inside them. The circles are connected by lines and map an 

international network, but what is at stake here remains 

unclear. Does the drawing map a production line, or a 

diaspora? It is up to the viewer to formulate an answer. 

art is a radio station broadcasting on different frequencies, 

it evokes new associations over and over. One may muse 

over the silver thread that Nkanga uses recalling the 

African or actually simply human desire for ‘bling.’ Just 

like one’s attention may be caught by the rusty metal that 

connotes practical strength and industrial utility while at 

once emanating musty, rusty redundancy. Letting the eyes 

wander over the drawings one sees the world as abstraction 

and form, but also human relationships, dependency, and 

the implicit presence of people from elsewhere in the objects 

that we use every day. The works of art consist of hundreds 

of facts that continuously shape different constellations of 

signification. The nearly inexhaustible complexity of the 

work never cedes to make us perceive. 

At Heron Legal, the artworks help the lawyers to understand 

facts in different ways, and to cherish the plenitude of 

interpretations and the openness of each situation. The art 

offers them a kind of daily mental exercise, practiced by

simply allowing the eyes and thoughts to wander off from time 

to time. Thus, the works at Heron Legal are much more than 

merely ‘something beautiful on the wall.’ The art creates a 

context that contributes to the quality of the service. Indeed, 

a creative solution often does not demand something entirely 

new. Rather, what is required is the ability to re-read existing 

facts. Art helps one in doing so. It challenges us to keep looking 

in order to see what otherwise remains concealed. 

We are sitting in a room where the abstract map and the 

earth’s surface patterns woven in textile seem a long way 

off from the everyday law practice. It is the room where 

Heron Legal’s employees have numerous and very diverse 

consults and meetings with clients and among one another. 

Such conversations are understandably marked by the 

questions of the clients. This is where the lawyers practice 

their craftsmanship. They look for overview and insight as 

to the multitude of perspectives that their clients, partners or 

opponents adhere to, and usually apply this to the law. Even 

if facts themselves may be univocal, they are always part of a 

bigger picture and it is the calling of the lawyers to match the 

different interpretations. At first glance, the works appear as 

a mere backdrop for the law firm. 

Steven ten Thije (1980) is art historian, conservator, and author. 

He is affiliated with the Van Abbemuseum as coordinator of the 

European museum federation L’internationale. In 2013, he cofounded 

‘Steen in de vijver’ (‘stone in the pond’), a think tank for art 

and democracy. 

While our conversation unfolds, every once in a while the 

artworks intervene subtly. Softly, the works tickle the eyes of 

those present and silently comment on the proceedings. The 

works offer themselves, in profoundly divergent situations 

and in the brief moments of calm in between talks. As if the
