OUR HISTORY 

From the baseball diamond 

to the golf green 

Danny Thompson played shortstop for the Minnesota Twins for 

only one season before being diagnosed with leukemia at the 

age of 26. Refusing to let his illness get him down, he went on to 

play two more seasons while undergoing treatment. He lost his 

battle with leukemia in 1976.

To honor Danny’s memory and support the fight against leukemia, 

Baseball Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew and Congressman 

Ralph Harding established the Danny Thompson Memorial Golf 

Tournament Leukemia Research Benefit. The inaugural event 

was held in 1977 in Sun Valley, Idaho. The guest list included 

President Gerald Ford, Speaker of the House Thomas “Tip” O’Neill, 

Mickey Mantle, and Joe DiMaggio. 

Harmon Killebrew lost his own battle with esophageal cancer 

in 2011. The tournament was renamed the Killebrew-Thompson 

Memorial in memoriam.

ABOUT US 

The Killebrew-Thompson Memorial is dedicated to raising funds for 

leukemia and cancer research through an annual charity event held 

in Sun Valley, Idaho. Since 1977, individuals from across the country 

have gathered with one goal in mind: to find a cure for cancer.

The Killebrew-Thompson Memorial is now one of the leading cancer 

research fundraisers of its kind. What began as a golf tournament among 

friends and associates has evolved beyond the golf course into a four-day 

affair showcasing the best of Sun Valley. The event lineup includes an 

Idaho Welcome BBQ, Auction Gala, Concert for a Cure, and much more.

SURVIVOR SPOTLIGHT 

Blake Hastings 

Blake Hastings went into the clinic for an MRI of his foot for what he was sure was a broken 

bone. But sitting in the exam room alone, the then-37-year-old received the news he never 

expected to get: he had cancer. It was likely Ewing sarcoma, a type of cancer of the bones 

or the soft tissue around them. 

A family friend at his diagnosing clinic made a call that would change Blake’s life. Six hours 

later, Blake and Carey met with M Health Fairview orthopedic surgeon Denis Clohisy, M.D., a 

member of the renowned Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota. 

“When it comes to Ewing sarcoma, it’s really premature to advise amputation until we’ve 

seen the effect of the chemotherapy,” Clohisy says. “In most cases, it shrinks the tumor 

and therefore results in a surgical treatment that’s less debilitating than one might have 

thought at the beginning.” 

Blake spent a grueling nine months in treatment – but at home. For weeks at a time, he’d 

barely leave his bed. He spent about 15 days in the hospital total. 

In the end, Blake was able to keep his leg, losing only part of his foot. About six weeks after his treatments had ended, he felt 

like he was back to “full steam.” And now, one month short of five years later, the Hastings couldn’t be happier about Blake’s 

recovery. 

“The U of M team really managed the care of the person and the health of the person,” Blake says. “I think the medical care is 

as important as providing that hope for someone, a family, that there is an end zone.” 

Today the Hastings family is back to life as usual – working, getting the kids to their activities, and going on vacations together. 

Blake likes to spend his time golfing, skiing, hunting, fishing, and playing basketball – and bragging that he can still beat his 

kids at any of these activities with only nine toes. 


OUR BENEFICIARIES 

Proceeds from the Killebrew-Thompson Memorial advance cancer research and care at St. Luke’s Cancer Institute and 

Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota. KTM has donated $21.4 million to these institutions, which has gone 

directly to cancer research. Our beneficiaries leverage these funds four- to five-fold through matching grants and other 

funds, increasing the impact of our donation by up to $6 million annually. 

St. Luke’s Cancer Institute (SLCI) brings cuttingedge 

clinical trials to Idaho and the Northwest. 

SLCI provides access to experimental treatments 

usually only available at hospitals in larger 

metropolitan areas. Funds contributed by KTM 

cover research costs incurred by both enrolled 

patients and SLCI itself, making accessible new 

treatment pathways. 

The Masonic Cancer Center (MCC) is advancing 

cancer care beyond the chemotherapy and radiation 

treatments of the past. MCC is preeminent in the 

research of cell therapies to treat leukemia and 

solid tumor cancers. Support from KTM seeds high 

impact studies that contribute to the worldwide 

research community and that improve quality of life 

for patients and survivors.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT 

Format for Play 

The format is four-person, two best-ball over two-days. 

• Max handicap: Men 24 | Women 36. 

• Player whose score is counting for the team must putt out. 

• Scores and handicaps subject to review after each round by 

Handicap Chairman Tate Mills, PGA. 

Mulligans 

Players may purchase up to two mulligans per day. These can be used 

for any stroke on a hole, with the exception of contest holes (Closest to 

the Pin and Longest Drive). 

Handicap Index 

The handicap index of GHIN will be based on Sun Valley’s course rating. 

Previous years’ posted scores may be used for handicap adjustments, 

which can be conducted at any time. Adjusted handicaps may be used 

for individual low net and team scores. 

Awards 

The tournament concludes with a ceremony that presents awards to: 

• Three lowest scoring teams. 

• Low Net and Low Gross scores (men and women). 

• Longest Drive and Closest to the Pin (each day and course for men 

and women). 


GOLF COURSES 

Elkhorn Golf Course 

First opened in 1974, the Elkhorn Golf Course represents 

the last collaboration between legendary father-son design 

team Robert Trent Jones, Senior and Junior. Trent Jones, Sr. 

designed the rather hilly front nine. His son designed the 

back nine, which follows a creek and presents water hazards 

on all but one hole. 

The undulating greens, 7,214 yards long from the tips, boast 

over 100 sand traps and bunkers and feature scenic vistas 

extending from the Elkhorn hillsides to Sun Valley’s White 

Clouds golf course. The course underwent renovations in 

2004 and was acquired by Sun Valley Company in 2011. 

Trail Creek Golf Course 

Golf Digest ranked Sun Valley Resort as one of the top 75 

resort courses in North America. Trail Creek is Sun Valley’s 

signature course and promises a challenging round of golf 

for every level of player. 

Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed the traditional alpine course 

in 1980 with a full complement of stream carries and ominous 

bunkers well-positioned to catch the errant shot. Play crosses 

the beautiful Trail Creek seven times on the front nine alone! 

Coupled with fantastic views of the surrounding mountains 

and ever-present clear blue skies, a round of golf on the Trail 

Creek Course is a prized addition to any golf resume.

PRE-TOURNAMENT ACTIVITIES 

On Thursday before the tournaments begin, participants can choose to enjoy a golf round or one of five other activities 

that showcase the beauty of the Sun Valley area. Social guests may join a participant for an additional fee. 

Whitewater Rafting 

Soak in the scenery of the Sawtooth Mountains as you float 

down the Salmon River near Stanley, Idaho. Choose from 

either a leisurely, rapid-free float or a wild ride over Class II 

and III rapids. Transportation, gear, and snack provided. 

Shooting Sports 

Whether you’re new to the sport or an experienced shooter, 

the certified instructors at the Sun Valley Gun Club offer 

challenges for every ability. Choose from trap, five-stand, or 

sporting clays. Ammunition, guns, and targets provided. 


Horseback Riding 

Miners and ranchers first came to the Wood River Valley 130 

years ago. Get a taste of Sun Valley’s Western heritage with

and shooters proved their mettle over the last two days of

of Sun Valley’s famed Bald Mountain ski resort. Sing and dance 

along to familiar classics while raising the roof for a worthy
