Summary
This thesis analyses 3D model-based road design according to Norwegian Public Roads
Administration’s new Handbook 138, using the software Novapoint 19 DCM . A specific
project, a new pedestrian and cycle path along Heimdalsvegen, were previously designed
with traditional 2D drawings in NP 18.30. In this thesis the project is transferred to
Novapoint 19.10, developed and prepared for delivery in accordance with Handbook 138.
Moreover, it is considered whether the result follows the specific guidelines of the given
manual. It is also given a review of some of the choices NPRA made in the preparation
of the book, based on the information that has emerged in the literature study.
In the second part, the thesis take a look at the data flow through the project and
analyses whether in particular LandXML is able to store data for the design road model.
To assess this LandXML files are exported and compared against the original road model
in Novapoint.
The task is limited to only consider data flow for the road model; it does not go
into other relevant areas such as road signs or landscape. Nor is software other than
Novapoint 19 DCM taken into consideration. The main findings and conclusions of the
work are summarized in the following bullet points:
• Novapoint is able to deliver results that largely comply with the guidelines in
Handbook 138.
• NPRA has made good choices in the handbook, including requiring the design to
be made in the NTM-projection and delivery of models in the LandXML format.
• LandXML can save the result road model, but falls short when it comes to the
design data.
In the end of the thesis there are identified some areas for improvement. For NPRA
it is recommended to engage in the further development of LandXML. It is also recom
mended to improve the object list with clearer requirements for the metadata to be
delivered. For Novapoint there is a need for a better and more complete LandXML
export of the road model. There is also a need to facilitate coordination of different
disciplines (clash detection) directly in NP Basis, and to develop a better link between
Basis and the visualization tool Virtual Map.
