ABSTRACT
This study will present and discuss the problematic about the use of Heat Set Adhesives in
conservation and restoration of tracing paper. This study proved to be important since the information
that existed on this subject is limited, and the adhesives materials under study are recent.
The materials, namely, the tracing paper documents with adhesives of national archive of
Departamento de Informação, Biblioteca e Arquivos do Instituto da Habitação e da Reabilitação
Urbana, and pristine materials (tracing paper, Archibond Heat Set Tissue ® and Filmoplast R ® ) were
analyzed by micro-infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance, optical microscopy, and
measurements of color and pH. The physical behavior of adhesives applied in tracing papers of
national archive was compared with the performance of pristine samples (reinforced with the two types
of adhesives) and submitted to normalized accelerated ageing. Neither in samples of archives, nor in
aged samples were detected considerable changes in the material at molecular level; the physical
behavior of tested adhesives was similar for both of them, and they were reversible, although with
different solvents. In the studied tracer papers and adhesives the variation in color and in acidity was
not very significant.
