REVISÃO TAXONÔMICA DE APHELANDRA R. BR.
(ACANTHACEAE) DE COROLA CURTO-BILABIADA

Abstract
In this study the delimitation of Aphelandra a neotropical genus with about 200
species is discussed. The taxonomic review of Geissomeria species and
varieties, as traditionally delimited, showed the imprecise limits to segregate
Geissomeria from Aphelandra. Thus is proposed the reduction of Geissomeria
to a synonymy in Aphelandra. An analytic key for identification of ten species
distinguished by corolla with upper and lower lips reduced together with
descriptions, illustrations, comments on taxonomic and nomenclatural issues
and habitat informations are presented. In this group species were recognized
based on vegetative and floral morphological characters. The following new
species were described: A.wasshausenii, A.hymenobracteata and A.grazielae.
Two species were excluded: Geissomeria mexicana Lindau which is found tobe
Holographis, and Geissomeria lolioides Lindau which is Stenandrium radicosum
Nees.Brazil is an important center of genetic diversity for the genus Aphelandra.
Of the 42 species 33 are exclusively Brazilian. Five patterns of geographic
distribution are proposed and discussed: West-North Amazon; Regional and
Pan-Atlantic endemism, in the Atlantic forest; Central Brazil and North-Central-
Atlantic South American. Maps of the geographic distribuition of these species
are presented. For the group of species studied a morphological cladistic
analysis was undertaken; the results indicate that the group is monophyletic
within Aphelandra.

Resumo
Neste trabalho é discutida a delimitação de Aphelandra, um gênero neotropical
com aproximadamente 200 espécies. A revisão taxonômica dos táxons do
gênero Geissomeria, como tradicionalmente circunscrito revelou a imprecisão
dos limites estabelecidos para segregar esse gênero de Aphelandra. Assim, é
proposta a sinonimização de Geissomeria em Aphelandra. Para as espécies de
corola com o lábio superior e inferior reduzido de Aphelandra, apresenta-se um
estudo dos caracteres morfológicos vegetativos e florais tendo como base
materiais, incluindo tipos, provenientes de diversos herbários nacionais e
estrangeiros. Foram reconhecidas dez espécies, sendo três novas para a
Ciência, A.wasshausenii, A.hymenobracteata e A.grazielae. Duas espécies
foram excluídas: Geissomeria mexicana Lindau pertence ao gênero
