observatory built for Markgraf at the top of one of the<br />
Vrijburg towers, both in style and proportions, as may<br />
be judged from my subsequent <strong>de</strong>scription of the later<br />
building. This being so, it seems very probable that the<br />
addition to the Portuguese house was inten<strong>de</strong>d as an<br />
observatory for Markgraf. It must have been extremely<br />
difficult to place such an edifice securely above an old<br />
building, and the poor values for the <strong>de</strong>duced latitu<strong>de</strong>s<br />
