Mudança para Friburgo
Em maio de 1642 o Conselho Político pede a velha
residência do conde.
Post a vice-regal palace, Freiburg, in the suburb
which were visible six to seven leagues at sea and
which served as beacons to the mariners
Marcgrave used as an observatory. This was in all
“Just as the tower of Freiburg, which was
“…Markgraf was well and truly in possession of
“There is an illustration by Zacharias Wagner of the
house in which Johan Maurits lived for most of his time in
Brazil, that is, before his relatively short spell in the
Vrijburg. The house, on Antonio Váz, was an old
Portuguese house, but – as pointed out to me by Professor
José Antonio Gonsalves de Mello (see also his Tempo dos
Flamengos, 2nd. edition, 1978, p. 84[1]) – there is a
superstructure above the roof which was not a part of the
original house[2].
[1] Aí Gonsalves de Mello não relaciona a estrutura sobre o
telhado com o observatório.
[2] Gonsalves de Mello teria dado a dica para North de que
a superestrutura era o observatório.
This superstructure was remarkably like the
observatory built for Markgraf at the top of one of the
Vrijburg towers, both in style and proportions, as may
be judged from my subsequent description of the later
building. This being so, it seems very probable that the
addition to the Portuguese house was intended as an
observatory for Markgraf. It must have been extremely
difficult to place such an edifice securely above an old
building, and the poor values for the deduced latitudes
are doubtless a reflection of this fact.” (404). ∴ 2 locais
“...após o desabamento da casa[1] onde Markgraf realizara
suas primeiras observações, parece terlhe construído
sucessivamente dois observatórios. O primeiro, no topo de
uma velha casa portuguesa na qual o príncipe residia: a
segunda, uma construção magnífica, no alto de uma das
First observatory in Southern Hemisphere
“His observatory seems to have been located at Maurice’s
mansion.
The evidence comes from two sources. First is a painting...
Contemporary accounts describe it as an observing turret.
The second source is a little booklet found by J. D. North
among Markgraf’s papers at Paris Observatory ... Since
measurements are given, it is possible to reconcile the
description with the painting if allowance is made for the
latter’s poor perspective.
Scholars have heretofore believed that Markgraf had his
observatory at Maurice’s second mansion, built in 1642
some 400 meter from the first. Althoug it had two towers,
there is no sign of an observatory and the tower design
does not agree with Markgraf’s notes.”

historical essays in astronomy, natural philosophy
and scientific method, W. B. C. Ltd., Bristol and
Maesteg, 1989, 215-234
Em Addenda, p. 234: “Mr. Jorge Polman has raised in
correspondence with me the interesting possibility that
the papers now in the Paris Observatory describe
Markgraf’s observatory as depicted in the Wagner
painting, that is, that they might relate to the
Portuguese house, rather than the Vrijburg palace. His
arguments are well set out in a pamphlet Markgraf e o
Recife de Nassau, Clube Estudantil de Astronomia,
Recife, 1984. It is very difficult to decide between the
alternatives, for the uppermost sections of the towers
on both buildings were roughly similar, as far as we can
judge from the surviving drawings (mas, desenho de
Wagner é claro e cfr datas dos MP). The height implied
by the 43 steps mentioned in the text is no important
clue, except that we cannot be sure of the point from
which they commenced (de fato, seg. modelo 3D
começa do assoalho do 1° andar).
I see no problem in the curvature of the
‘pyramids’ on the Vrijburg towers, for
observing hatches were often made in curved
roofs, as they were at Uraniborg and still are
today. The problem with resting a hypothesis
on the unsuitable character of the Vrijburg
towers as an observatory is that it rules out
too much, for where, then was Markgraf’s
second observatory? (ora, o problema do 2°
observatório nem sequer existe!) It would be
surprising, too, if the second observatory
were radically different in plan from the first.
The architectural historial J. J. Terwen found
my explanation well suited to his
reconstruction of the plan of the Vrijburg.
There are also the problems of the large
clock in the tower, and the Prince’s chamber
(see p. 255 above) (mas a pág. da nota é
suggestions offers distinct possibilities.”

Marcgraf’s position visàvis both Piso and the Count had
changed considerably (?). From at least that time forward,
Marcgraf was a member of the Count’s Brazilian court,
perhaps even taking up residence in Vrijburg, the Count’s
new palace in Mauritsstad (now part of Recife), when the
observatory was completed (c. 1642). With the observatory
housed in one of the palace’s main towers, and given
Marcgraf’s need to make nightly observations, such an
arrangement would hardly be surprising. According to
Christian, however, the sequence of events went as follows:
Johan Maurits, favourably impressed by Marcgraf’s abilities
in military engineering during battle with the Portuguese in
Salvador [1639, Bahia], ‘honors him at his own table for 3
months having adorn’d him with a garmet interwove with gold
… confesses himself his pupil, & bestows upon him the
salary of a Captain & commands him to have a seat in ye new
Citty of Maurice, where Marcgrave setts up an Astronomical
Observatory’ …” Versão de Christian parece mais verdadeira
