THE CHALLENGE OF CULTURAL STUDIES TO
ACADEMIC DISCIPLINE BOUNDARIES
The aim of this paper is to furnish a brief and partial
introduction to cultural studies. Attention is given to
its interdisciplinary approach, which is interpreted in
the context of its emergence in postwar Britain and
its transformations during the 1960s and 1970s as
well as its diffusion in other English-speaking
countries. The implications of its interdisciplinary
nature are also illustrated in association with the
vanishing frontiers between literature, anthropology
and cultural studies, as well as high and popular
culture. Post-colonial studies are also given attention
by way of focusing on the continuing shift in cultural
studies regarding otherness and identity in a global
context. Finally, the author’s approach is invoked
regarding questions of the disciplinary identity of
German Studies and the rethinking of its contribution
to new approaches to cultural studies.
