AN ANALYSIS OF THE HISTORICAL CONTENT PRESENT IN BRAZILIAN
TEXTBOOKS RECOMMENDED BY PNLEM-2007: MENDEL’S CONTRIBUTIONS
Abstract: This work aims to verify the historical content present in Brazilian Biology textbooks
recommended by the National Textbook for High Schools (PNLEM-2007), according to Ministry
of Education’s (MEC) ordinance (number 501) of February 14 th , 2006. It was selected for
analysis an episode on the History of Genetics that was supposed, given its relevance, to be
present in the nine books that make up the previously mentioned list: the contributions of
Gregor Mendel (1822-1884). The working method for analyzing the contents of a historical
nature consists in the adoption, accompanied by adaptation, of a protocol already presented
in the literature. It is an analysis tool that takes into account quantitative and qualitative
aspects of the historical information available. The analyzed aspects in historical narratives
were: epistemic context; non-epistemic context; the characters' lives and their personalities;
community of scholars; approach of ideas and development of Science. The results show that
the historical approach on the books analyzed remains keeping historiography vices and
historical misconceptions that have been widely discussed in the History of Science since the
mid-twentieth century. It is suggested to the teachers that choose these books to make a
critical reading of these texts with the students, through meta-cognitive discussions that
explicit the effects of such approaches to understanding the Nature of Science (NOS).

1. INTRODUÇÃO
Esta pesquisa destina-se à análise de abordagem histórica contida nos nove livros didáticos
brasileiros de Biologia sugeridos pelo Plano Nacional do Livro Didático para o Ensino Médio
(PNLEM/MEC) de 2007, segundo a portaria nº 501 do Ministério da Educação (MEC), de 14 de
fevereiro de 2006. A análise foi realizada mediante a utilização de uma ferramenta proposta
originalmente por Laurinda Leite (2002) para episódios de História da Física, adaptada por
Paulo Vidal (2009) em episódio da História da Química, com novas alterações na presente
pesquisa. Trata-se de um guia ou protocolo de análise que pode, de fato, ser aplicado a
qualquer área da História da Ciência e para qualquer tipo de episódio.
O episódio histórico selecionado para a análise foi o da contribuição de Gregor Mendel (1822-
1884) sobre experimentos de hibridização de plantas, restringindo ao que é apresentado nos livros
didáticos como primeira e segunda leis de Mendel. A delimitação foi necessária para assegurar
uma análise aprofundada do episódio. Por sua vez, esse tópico foi escolhido devido à sua
relevância no ensino da genética clássica, além de constituir item curricular sugerido nos
Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais (Brasil, 1999), Brasil (2002, p. 46), bem como, mais
recentemente, na Proposta Curricular do Estado de São Paulo: Biologia (Fini, 2008, p. 52).
Genética é considerada um assunto difícil de ensinar e aprender, com dificuldades
específicas (Longden, 1982, p. 135). Também é conhecida a limitação na compreensão da
natureza da informação genética pelos alunos, e o nível de confusão em relação às estruturas
básicas biológicas, como célula, cromossomo e gene, e suas inter-relações (Lewis &
