ABSTRACT<br />
ABSTRACT: The mining and processing of concentrated phosphate are<br />
responsible for innumerable impacts on the environment, some of them<br />
capable of make the installation of a business impracticable. The<br />
company IFC had the Preliminary Environmental License of the<br />
phosphate mine exploration, on the city of Anitápolis, suspen<strong>de</strong>d in<br />
29/09/2009. The assessment of potential environmental impacts of the<br />
installation and operation of this business, performed by the<br />
characterization of the <strong>de</strong>velopment and history of the licensing process,<br />
generated a Critical Unit of Environmental Impact Magnitu<strong>de</strong> of<br />
61,11%. In or<strong>de</strong>r to reduce the environmental impact of the project some<br />
corrective measures were proposed. This result is inclu<strong>de</strong>d in the context<br />
of the <strong>de</strong>mand for phosphate fertilizers in Brazil providing reflections<br />
that may be helpful the controversial proposal of the mine exploration.<br />
