2020 CAIR

COALITION

VIRTUAL

AWARDS

GALA

F o c u s e d o n F r e e d o m

Letter from Kathy Doan,

Executive Director

Dear Friend,

To say the least, these are challenging and uncertain times, which reminds

me in some ways of when I began as Executive Director of CAIR Coalition

during the financial crisis and great recession over 10 years ago. However,

I also know that these moments focus us in on what’s important, re-affirm

our beliefs and core values, and force us to double our efforts to achieve

the most good for the greatest number of immigrant men, women and

children as we possibly can.

The 2020 CAIR Coalition Gala will take place virtually on September

23rd. Hundreds of supporters will join us online as we stay “Focused on

Freedom,” which is the theme for this year’s event. If you joined us for our

inaugural gala in 2019, you heard from local and national advocates for

immigrant families, including the Majority Leader of the U.S. House of

Representatives Steny Hoyer and U.S. Congressman Joe Kennedy III.

While the program is still in formation, stay tuned for additional

announcements over the coming days and weeks around our full slate of

honorees and speakers at www.caircoalition.org/event/2020gala.

This gala is more than an event, it is a crucial part of our efforts to provide

top-notch programming and representation to thousands of immigrants in

the Capital region, including those being held in detention, those seeking

asylum and those facing deportation. The demands we face, which have

increased dramatically since 2017, have increased two-fold this year as we

battle the coronavirus pandemic, which has spread to all detention centers

in the area. That is why I hope you will consider joining us as a sponsor of

this year’s gala. Our inaugural event raised almost $500,000 and our

hope this year is to cross this number and deliver a message at the same

time that our work, our daily efforts and our resources will stay focused on

freedom.

As you consider your support, I leave you with this. Only 11% of

detainees without representation end up winning their cases. That’s

where you and I come in. When we stay focused on freedom and when

we provide representation through our dedicated staff and generous

pro bono partners, we win!

On behalf of the entire CAIR Coalition family, thank you for your

consideration of support around this year’s gala. Take care, stay healthy,

and I look forward to celebrating virtually with you in September.

Sincerely,

Kathryn M. Doan

About Us

The Capital Area Immigrants’ Rights (CAIR) Coalition works to keep

immigrant families together and strives to ensure equal justice for all

adults and children at risk of detention and deportation in the Capital

region and beyond through direct legal representation, know your

rights presentations, impact litigation, advocacy and the training of

attorneys to defend immigrants. The pro bono services we provide

are for immigrants from all over the world. We serve everyone from

arriving asylum seekers to long-term residents of the U.S. with strong

family and community ties.

With a 40% increase in detention nationwide in the last year, and the

addition of several new immigration detention facilities in the DC

area, CAIR Coalition has added additional legal staff and expanded our

impact litigation work to North Carolina. Now, with the coronavirus

pandemic, CAIR Coalition is working doubly hard to get high-risk

clients out of detention as quickly as possible.

When you invest in CAIR Coalition, you work with us to provide

dignity to immigrants who would otherwise have no legal

representation. And without legal representation, an immigrant in

deportation proceedings will mostly like lose their case, no matter how

compelling the facts. CAIR Coalition is the only 501c3 non-profit

organization with a legal services program focused exclusively on

assisting immigrants being detained in adult and juvenile immigration

detention centers in the Washington, DC area.

CAIR Coalition’s 2020 Virtual Awards Gala:

Focused on Freedom

The Capital Area Immigrants’ Rights (CAIR) Coalition works with our

partners to protect the rights, the lives, and the families of immigrants in

the Capital region and beyond. Our annual signature event brings together

several hundred supporters from across DC, Maryland and Virginia

committed to providing justice for immigrant men, women and children

threatened with detention and deportation. The evening provides us with

an opportunity to honor our champions, including our pro bono advocates,

leaders on Capitol Hill, and committed law firms that provide millions

of dollars in pro bono legal services on an annual basis. We are pleased

to invite you to join us for this virtual event, a night of celebration, on

September 23, 2020.
