QUERÉTARO HISTORY

During the first decades of the colonial

period Querétaro was one of the most

opulent and important cities of the New

Spain, since it marked the limit of what they

called the civilized world for the colonizers

and further north there was barbarism,

Therefore, they considered it necessary to

found temples and convents in the town to

strengthen the spirit of the laity and

religious, so Franciscans, Discalced

Carmelites, Jesuits and Dominicans arrived

in Querétaro to begin the spiritual conquest

of the region, known as Tierra Dentro (Land

Within).

Although the state was once again the

scene of great battles during the Revolution,

its buildings and monuments did not suffer

as much damage as in the last century,

thanks to which, today we can still enjoy its

beauty.

Knowing a little more about our Queretaro,

here are some curious facts that will leave

you open-mouthed.

how the Otomi, Tarascans, Chichimecs and Spaniards

coexisted peacefully in this city.

GAME OF BALL

From Queretaro

The fantastic field of the ball game, is divided into four

equal parts indicating the four winds, being symmetrical.

They also represent the stages through which the gods of

their mythology passed and the attempts to create man.

They are all known as suns: Atonatiuh, sun of water;

Tlaltonatiuh, sun of earth; Tletonatiuh, sun of fire; and

Ehecatonatiuh, sun of air. Tonatiuh, sun of movement;
