President’s Letter We have had to say our final farewell to Eileen Dry and our
thoughts are with John and their family at this sad time.
As I am writing this letter, helicopters are flying back and forth to extinguish the
fire behind Estepona. One of our members had to be evacuated from their home
and it was good to see some members offer help. It's unbelievable that this fire
was supposedly started by a Frenchman trying to burn a hornet's nest. We all
have to be so careful at this time of year.
Sad news, Paul and Jacqui Parrick are having to return permanently to UK for family reasons and we
are therefore looking for another catering manager. If you feel you could help please let me know. A big
thank you to Jacqui and Paul for all their hard work. They have not been members long but have
worked hard for the Club in the kitchen, bar and starting Petanca on a Sunday. We wish you well, we
shall miss you.
This month sees most activities re-starting plus the Welcome Back party, Autumn Cup and Salobreña
trip. Please see magazine and club notice board for details of all these events.
Forward announcement about our 31st Birthday party which will be held in Palapa restaurant in Laguna
village on Saturday 2nd November. More details in this magazine and prices etc next month. Tickets
will be on sale mid-September. Keep safe everybody.
NEW GROUP FORMING
Geoff Fabron is starting a New Group in ICE which will called The History Group. The first meeting will
be on Monday 21st October at 8.00pm and will meet once a month.
Geoff says “Basically I'm happy for the group to cover anything history related - political history,
economic etc. My own interest is military history from the Greeks and Persians through to modern
times (Vietnam/Falklands/Iraq). Those who turn up to the meetings/talks will decide what we will
cover. If I'm the only one willing to make presentations, then it will be of a more military/war theme,
but I will cover the political/economic/cultural drivers as well. “
A REMINDER FROM THE TICKET LADIES
Unfortunately, we are unable to reserve tickets for any of our events, which are often advertised
well in advance of the actual date, but the tickets are unable to be printed ready for sale until all
costings/details are finalised. If you are interested in a forthcoming event, but know that you are
going to be away when the tickets are likely to go on sale, we suggest you ask a friend to
purchase them for you in your absence. That way you are also able to choose your table
companions, if applicable. We really don´t want anyone to miss out or be disappointed.
MEMBER’S ARTICLE
Why are there seven days in a week – and who named them?
The seven-day week has its origins in the Babylonian ancient civilisation, 2,000 and more BCE - before
Greece and Rome started to dominate the known world. As outstanding astronomers, Babylonians
came up with a calendar intended to predict the movement of the moon as well as its transition between
each phase: full, waning half, new and waxing half. Whereas Earth and Sun helped them identify days
and years, the full moon cycle indicated months, taking approximately 28 days for the moon to go
through its four phases, each phase taking 7 days.
Furthermore, the number 7 had been identified with a certain mysticism. They tried to relate astronomy
with astrology to create a sort of horoscope, assigning each of the 7 days to the sun, the moon and the
5 planets visible to the naked eye: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn.
The Romans adapted Babylon’s 7-day calendar to suit their purpose, since which time the seven-day
week is thought of in modern times as being due to Rome and Christianity.
So let’s look at the names given to the days.
In ancient Greece, the days were dedicated to the Sun, Moon, Ares, Hermes, Zeus, Aphrodite, and
Cronos, named after the heavenly bodies that presided over the first daylight hour of each day,
according to Hellenistic astrology.
The Romans converted the Greek into their Latin equivalents and named the days after their gods’
names for the planets because they connected their gods to the changing face of the night-time sky.
The ones they were able to see in the sky each night were the same as the Babylonians had recorded,
so the names of the same seven major astronomical bodies were used. But elsewhere in the northern
reaches of the Roman Empire, while the number of days was accepted, the names given to them were
something else. Further afield, many other schemes were created.
Sunday
The first day of the week was named after the sun – dies Solis in Latin - and later Sunnon-dagaz in old
Germanic. English comes from the Indo-Germanic language group and gives us Sunday in English and
Sonnesdag in German. In Spanish, domingo refers to the Lord’s day (dies dominicus) and reflects the
influence of the Christian church, as in Italian, domenica and French dimanche.
Monday
Monday is moon day – dies Lunae in Latin, becoming Monandæg in Old English, and in German,
Montag. The Spanish relates directly to the original Roman, as Lunes and in Italian, Lunedi and French,
Lundi.
Tuesday
Whereas most English days of the week retain their associations with the Roman gods, some were
substituted for the names of the equivalent Germanic gods. Tuesday had been named for the Roman
god of war, Mars - dies Martis in Latin. However, the Germanic god of war was known as Tiu and the
English day of the week so derived, first known as Tiwsday and eventually Tuesday. Again, the Spanish
stays with the Roman as martes, the Italian, martedi and French mardi.
Wednesday
The Germanic equivalent of the Roman god Mercury was Woden. What started out in Latin as dies
Mercurii became Woden’s day in old Germanic, eventually becoming Wednesday in English. The
Spanish closely follows the Roman as miércoles, and Italian, mercoledi and French, mercredi. Modern
Germans are happy to call it ‘middle of the week’ - mittwoch.
12

Thursday
Jupiter, also known as Jove, was the supreme Roman god who created thunder and lightning. Thor is
the Norse god of thunder, so the Latin dies Jovis became Thor’s day and eventually Thursday. In
Spanish, jueves and in Italian, giovedi, and the French, jeudi, stayed with the Romans.
Friday
Venus was the Roman goddess of love and beauty, and in Latin her day was known as dies Veneris.
The Norse goddess of love and the heavens was Frigg while the Teutonic goddess of love and beauty
was Fria. This became in Germanic, Frije-dagaz, later becoming Friday in English. Again, Spanish,
viernes and Italian, venerdi stayed with Venus, while the French went with vendredi for their market day.
Saturday
Saturn was the Roman god of agriculture, known in Ancient Greece as Cronos. In Latin we have dies
Saturni and in English, Saturday. In Spanish, sabado, Italian sabato and French samedi are closely
related to Saturn and the Roman origins. Further north, they adopted a radically different name –
Lördag meaning laundry-day in Scandinavia.
But note! If you were planning to learn the days of the week in all the world’s
languages, be ready for two significant issues. Firstly, there are at least 158 words
for ‘Sunday’ and similar amounts for the other days, but secondly, in some
languages, the names are simply the numbers 1 to 7 (+ ‘day’) but … Sunday or
Monday or Saturday might be ‘day one’. It all depends where you are!
GARDEN CLUB
The Garden Club held their July meeting on Tuesday 9th July in Keith and Helen Rumsey's garden.
There was a good attendance of 18 made up of new and regular members. We each took our time
strolling around the beautiful garden, so much to see. Keith and Helen are always happy to help with
names or information about any of their shrubs, cacti or plants, even offering the odd cutting. We came
back and sat in the shade under their gazebo ready for the meeting to start.
Sandy had put out various gardening papers, photos etc. for new members to see. She pointed out two
important newspaper cuttings to read 1) regarding the possible danger to one's health when having a
compost heap and 2) regarding a Pensioner who won 61 million pounds over 'Roundup' weedkiller's
link to cancer.
There was plenty of enthusiasm regarding the last two Garden Club Meetings. Paloma park in May and
the last meeting in June to Molino del Santo.
It had already been decided to cancel the August Garden Club meeting as it is too hot and to hold the
September meeting on Tuesday 10th at 11.30 am in the AgroJardin Garden Centre. One of our
members offered their garden for the October 8th Garden Club meeting. (please speak to Sandy for
where and directions). Hopefully we shall have even more new members.- everyone is welcome.
The meeting was then left open to anyone who had a problem, needed advice or had advice to give.
Various conversations began and help offered re. ants, moths on geraniums, cockroaches, disease on
a palm tree, how it is a good idea to cut down various bushes and plants for them to then spread, etc
A very enjoyable lunch was provided with drinks
from our very hospitable hosts which got a huge
thank you from all the members. There were plenty
of cuttings offered to take home. and so we had.
another very enjoyable Garden Club get together.
PARKING AT THE ICE CLUB
Parking is not allowed in any of the yellow marked
areas and for good relations with our neighbours,
please do not park in the bay next to the front
door.
There is always ample parking space in Entrance
4 of Bahia Dorada. Just continue past the front of
Then turn right and drive parallel to the main road.
You can park near the top and walk along the
come into the club from back door.
CODEWORDS No. 22 (Answers Page 29)
Codewords are like crossword puzzles - but have no clues!
Instead, every letter of the alphabet has been replaced by a
number, the same number representing the same letter
throughout the puzzle. All you have to do is decide which
letter is represented by which number! To start you off, we
reveal the codes for two or three letters. With these letters
filled in throughout the puzzle, you'll have enough clues to
start guessing words and discovering other letters.
More Technology Matters
One of our members has pointed out that our website, theiceclub.es, is
not secure.
He's right, it's not secure, but at this time it probably doesn't need to be
as we don't take any personal details, passwords etc., from anybody
using the site. By “Not Secure” I mean it's not encrypted end to end, which becomes important when
credit card and other personal details are being collected.
Google has recently started to show a sign saying "Not secure" on their Chrome browser. I don't think
any of the other browsers are doing this at the moment. Nothing has changed with our site, it's just
Google trying to be clever. They can obviously see which sites are http and which are https but can't
tell which collect data and which don't, so all http sites are being labelled Not secure.
We can easily make it secure but it costs around an extra £65p.a. for the SSL certificate. The time may
come when it becomes compulsory but, having discussed it with Sheila, we feel that we can wait and
Working in a mirror factory is something I can totally see myself doing
So, what’s the difference between Cava and Kava?
The answer: A LOT!
Cava, meaning a cave or cellar in Spanish, lends the name to a sparkling wine of some similarity to
champagne. But by European law, it is not the same.
Cava may be made from only specific grapes and in specific areas of Spain, and carries the
all-important ‘VECPRD’ symbol (meaning a quality sparkling wine produced in a designated region).
Back in 1872, the vineyards of Penedès in Catalonia were devastated by a plague that affected the red
grapes being grown. In their place, a variety of white grapes were grown, and a local winemaker
developed a process for making sparkling wine with a device called a gyropallet. Cava was born - as a
commercially viable drink to rival champagne.
These days, cava is produced in Catalonia, Aragon, Castile y Leon, Extremadura, La Rioja, Navarre,
Valencia and in the Basque country, but only with specific varieties of grape.
Rosada cava (rosé) cannot be made by blending; the wine must be created only from the appropriate
grape variety and processed to give the sparkling result.
The top names for cava are Freixenet, the largest producer of traditional sparkling wine in the world,
based on vineyards from the 14 th century that include those under the Penedès family name, and
Codorníu, from the 16 th Century vineyards near Barcelona.
Kava, on the other hand, is a South Pacific speciality. It’s a root crop that is indigenous to the area with
varieties from New Zealand to Hawaii. It is popular in Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu and with most other
island communities and is a normal evening drink often consumed in ‘clubs’.
But it’s for men! Women do not drink kava.
Women do, however, take part in the preparation and serving of the drink. In the clubs of Tonga, for
instance, it will be served by a young, unmarried woman, essentially unrelated to any of the men
present. If a male relative were to be present, HE would have to leave. Young girls visiting the islands
might be invited to be a ‘server’ just for one evening. But not to drink!
You can chew the root, or alternatively pound it or grind it into a paste and add a little water – and
consume it directly. It might not look very appetising – a grey, brown or a yukky green – it has a
pungent taste and is often followed (quickly by first-timers) with a sweet or spicy snack. It is said to
produce a feeling of calmness, relaxation and well-being before eventually sending you off to sleep. It
apparently does not cause people to get angry or do stupid things!
These days, with TV available, and rugby to be watched, kava drinking can go on for hours. A typical
Saturday evening in Tonga might include a steady drinking session, pausing every now and again to
sing local songs accompanied by a guitar, before the rugby match starts. Then they would concentrate
on the match until half time when they would start singing again, focus on the second half and sing
again at the end of the match. As the Saturday evening approached midnight, the songs would change
to hymns – mostly with Tongan words sung to traditional English tunes.
(Sounds like a typical Saturday night out in the Welsh valleys to me! - in Welsh, of
course, not Tongan!)
As with all such drinks and drugs, it can be consumed in moderation or it can be
abused, and high strength kava is available for those who want to have scaly skin,
sore eyes, a loss of sex drive and general poor health.
You pays yer money and you takes yer choice!
MEMBER’S ARTICLE
Hi all,
After last year’s disappointment due to Carole's health problems, the 17th May was eagerly awaited.
10:15am came and as we went through all the last minute checks, everything unplugged, pump off etc.
Alan arrived in his shinny red taxi. I phoned the gate and let him into the garage, we took the lift down
and there he was waiting boot open, which soon swallowed up our cases.
We had a good run to the airport the conversation about catching up on various out of touch old friends.
After a restful sojourn in the airport lounge, with breakfast and a couple of very pleasant G & Ts, our
flight was ready to board on time to LHR. At Heathrow we had a few hours to kill in the BA lounge with
some more G & Ts and a light snack, spent watching the activity on the runway from our vantage point,
amused by the different in size of the relatively small looking Aerlingus planes and the giant Boeings
and airbus A350, and 380s.
Our flight to Calgary took off on time with the usual glass of bubbly and an excellent meal en route. I
watched a rather amusing Johnny English film, while Carole watched a documentary about Bowie.
On arrival, on time, in Calgary we were welcomed by the staff and ladies in cowboy hats who gave us
directions to the Marriot In terminal hotel, about two minutes walk from the baggage claim. The room
had floor to ceiling windows overlooking the apron, planes literally below the window. It was very well
insulated as we heard little noise from the planes taking off and landing. The Marriot would be strongly
recommended for the welcome, service, comfort (super king bed) and it's convenience.
We transferred to a Brewster coach, again about five minutes walk from the hotel, for a rather boring
drive to Banff, until we were a few miles away and it became stunning mountain scenery. The driver
dropped us off at the door to the Moose Hotel, we checked in to our on bed apartment, more than a
room, we expected just a room. It even has a realistic gas log fire, which is very inviting in the low
temperature today, tomorrow it's Lake Louise. BFN,
ACTIVITIES AT ICE
ICE Club Golf Society
Hello everyone.
I trust you are all enjoying the holiday season. Lots of people here in Estepona, as
usual in these two months, but not so many golfers at our roll-ups. Those who have
been here to play have found the course in good condition and have produced some very high scores.
A number of handicaps have been cut over the last few weeks.
We did have a summer away day at La Cala in July which is unusual as it is normally too hot. It was a
very good day with reasonable temperatures and the use of buggies.
Jackie McMurtry won with a very good 38 score with Mariska Blind in second with 35 points. Even more
unusually, we are having an away day at Valle Romano in August. Hope the weather is kind again and
not too hot!
Sept 24th is the Autumn cup and golf lunch. The golf is at Valle Romano. It will be a shotgun start at
09-00. The cost is 75€ incl. a buggy. All club members and non club members are welcome to join the
competition. The entrance sheet is on the board in the ICE Club. If you cannot sign the sheet in the
club, let me know your name, telephone number and golf handicap and I will add it.
The competition will be followed by a three course lunch at La Choza restaurant..
It costs 16€ each incl. a first drink and raffle ticket. Anyone is welcome to the lunch,
golfers or non golfers club members, friends or family. We normally eat at approximately
3 pm. The menu will be available with the tickets which are available from Peter Henry.
It is a fun lunch with good food!
In the beginning….
It came to pass that a trader by the name of Abraham Com took himself a
wife called Dorothy. Now Dot Com, as she was known, said unto Abraham :
“Why dost thou travel so far from town to town with thy goods when thou
canst trade without ever leaving thy tent?”
Abraham, looking at his wife as though she were several saddlebags short of
a camel load, sayeth: “How come, dearest?” And Dot replied: “I will place
drums in all the towns and drums in between to send messages saying what
you have for sale and what others are prepared to pay for them.”
So, the drums rang out and were an immediate success. Abraham sold all his
goods without ever leaving his tent. Soon the land rang with the sound of
drums and frantic trading, but no one noticed that the real riches were going
to one drum dealer who cornered the market and ensured that no drum
would work without his drumsticks.
And Dot did say: “Oh Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by
others.” And Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel (eBay as it came to
be known) and said: “We need a name that reflects what we are, like Young
Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators,” and because it had all started thanks
to his wife’s idea, they named it YAHOO Dot Com.
Meanwhile Abraham’s cousin Joshua, being a young Gregarious Energetic
Educated Kid (GEEK), muscled in on the family business known as God’s Own
Official Guide to Locating Everything or GOOGLE.
And that, folks, is how the Internet started.
Tracking your iPhone or iPad
Find My Phone is an integral part of Apple's iCloud service. When activated, your device will periodically upload its
location to Apple's servers for remote tracking. To enable it, open Settings on your iOS device and tap your name
at the top of the list of options. Tap iCloud on the next screen followed by Find My iPhone. Make sure the switch
beside Find My iPhone is on (green, and to the right) and (optionally) the one beside Send Last Location is in the
same position. This second option causes your device to upload its location to the server when the battery gets
critically low so that, if it runs flat, you'll at least know where it was recently (see screenshot above right).
Track your iOS devices and find out exactly when they were last in use - click one for options to lock or
wipe the device
To track a lost iPhone or iPad, open a new browser window and log in at https://icloud.eom/#find using your iCloud
account details. You'll need to provide your password for a second time, after which iCloud will switch to a map
view pinpointing every iOS, tvOS, watchOS or macOS device registered to your account. Click All Devices at the
top of the screen to switch between them.
If you've lost your phone, select it from the list and you can make it sound an alert to help you locate it in your
home. If it's been stolen, you can lock or remotely wipe it, or post a message to its screen asking whoever has it to
return it to you.
Tracking your Android devices
Google has built tracking features into the Play Store. Get started by opening Settings on your Android device and
searching for 'location' in the box at the top of the options. Tap the first result and make sure the switch for 'Use
location' is on (to the right). Now, switch to your PC, go to https:// play.google.com/settings and make sure that the
check box beside 'Show in menus' is ticked for each of the devices you want to secure. By default they should be,
but it's worth double-checking. If they are all ticked, open a new tab and visit https://android.com/ find. This will
open a map showing the location of each of your devices. If you have several, they are only shown one at a time,
so switch between them using the icons at the top of the left-hand sidebar.
As with Apple's Find My Phone feature, the Android Find site gives you the option to make the ringer sound at full
volume to help you find the lost phone, or to lock it with a message on the screen for
New free apps for your phone
This app available for both Android and iOS is a gardening guide, green-fingered social network, public
gardens directory and plant identifier tool. It includes articles, video guides and audio tours.
Receive text messages on your computer
This is possible by using Your Phone from the Microsoft Store. You will also need to download the app to
your phone from your app store (search for My Phone Companion)
Having downloaded the app to your computer, you are advised to minimize the app so that it is easily
accessible. There is also the opportunity to view the last 25 photos on your phone.
Please note that your phone will only sync texts and photos to your computer when you are connected to Wi-
Cross-border tax planning for today’s global transparency
By David Bowern, Partner, Blevins Franks
Tax transparency has recently been revolutionised by the global automatic exchange of information
under the ‘Common Reporting Standard’ (CRS). This initiative enables tax offices across the world to
keep track of taxpayers’ offshore assets and accounts.
Meanwhile, many countries, including the UK, have introduced additional measures to check taxpayers
are making correct declarations. HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) collected £560 million from offshore
tax investigations in the 2018/19 tax year –72% more than 2016/17, before CRS data collection began.
With such heightened worldwide scrutiny, it is more important than ever to make sure you are paying
the right taxes, in the right place, at the right time.
What is the Common Reporting Standard?
In 2016, the CRS “early adopters” began collecting information on financial accounts held by
non-residents. The first exchange – where the 2016 data was passed on to the taxpayers’ country of
residence – took place in 2017 between 49 jurisdictions, including the UK and Spain. Today, over 100
countries are co-operating, with more joining each year.
Financial information being shared includes investment income earned over the year (interest,
dividends, income from certain insurance contracts, annuities etc.), account balances and proceeds
from the sale of financial assets.
Local scrutiny
Tax offices receiving CRS information can easily verify whether taxpayers have accurately reported
their worldwide income on their income tax and wealth tax returns.
In Spain, the authorities have already started following up discrepancies after comparing data to
residents’ declarations. In the last exchange, the Hacienda received information on approximately 1.5
million offshore accounts with a total balance of €457 billion, while only €150 billion was declared
through Modelo 720.
In the UK, HMRC has made it clear that those who voluntarily declare and correct their offshore tax
arrangements will be in a much better position than anyone who waits until investigators find them. Its
‘Connect’ analysis programme cross-checks data it receives from abroad with its own, providing tax
officials with information to challenge around 500,000 cases each year.
The importance of getting it right
If you are tax resident in one country and have assets or earn income in another, take extreme care to
make sure you are correctly declaring income and paying tax where you should be.
While cross-border taxation is highly complex, getting it wrong – for any reason – can have severe
penalties serious consequences. Remember, ignorance is no defence.
There are tax planning arrangements available in Spain that can help you legitimately reduce your tax
liabilities, particularly on investments, so take advice for the best results. An adviser with cross-border
expertise can help you enjoy favourable tax treatment while offering peace of mind that you are meeting
your obligations, here and in the UK.
The tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our
understanding of current taxation laws and practices which are subject to change. Tax information has
