Edition: No. 150

Halloween 2020

We might not be able to go Trick or

Treating this year but we can certainly

make a scarecrow! See page 11 for

details of the very first Cross Houses

Scarecrow Competition and mega raffle.

Brompton Playing Fields

A Plea to Dog Owners

Brompton Playing Field is leased by Berrington

Parish Council from the National Trust. Over the

years the Parish Council has spent considerable

funds improving the facility for, although not

exclusively, the young people in our parish.

The problem with dog fouling has got worse year

on year, no sooner is the area cleaned the

problem returns. It is a health hazard for people

using the facility and no one wants to be cleaning

dog mess off shoes and worse.

COMMUNITY SPEEDWATCH SCHEME

There has been a number of comments regarding the speed of traffic

through our villages. We do have a Community Speedwatch Team but in

order for it to be effective we need more volunteers for

Cross Houses and Atcham. The more volunteers we have,

the more sessions. See page 8 For further details.

The situation is now so bad that the grounds

maintenance contractors are complaining

about the time it takes to clean the equipment

after they have mown the grass as their

equipment ends up covered in the mess too.

The Parish Council are concerned for the

health and safety of anyone using the playing

field and they are constantly receiving

complaints.

Most dog owners are very responsible, the

small minority are ruining facilities for

everyone. See letter on page 6.

A message from your Shropshire Councillor

Claire Wild

I hope you are keeping well and staying safe. We, in Shropshire, compared to

other areas, have been fortunate not to have experienced further lock downs and

I sincerely hope this continues. However the virus is still very much with us and

we need remain vigilant. Remember “Hands, Face, Space” to ensure we keep the

infections away.

BERRINGTON MEADOWS JUNCTION ONTO THE A458

I have received a lot of complaints about the visibility to the right when leaving Berrington Meadows.

Shropshire Council’s Highways Development Control officers have been informed and a meeting has been

arranged for the engineers to see the issue first hand and to find a solution.

GREAT BRITISH SEPTEMBER CLEAN

Thanks to those who attended the above litter pick on Saturday 19th September, 8 bags of rubbish was

collected. The Cronkhill Road (Cross Houses to Atcham) is particularly bad and a future litter pick will

concentrate on this road. It seems to be a haven for car drivers chucking cans and plastic bottles onto the

verges. Other litter picks will be arranged and advertised in the Pump.

DOG FOULING

You will have seen the cover item and the letter from a resident regarding dog fouling, specifically on the

playing fields at Brompton. I am at a loss as to how we can resolve this situation. It was suggested that the

Parish Council should ban dogs on the field. This is not only difficult to police but also incredibly unfair on

the vast majority of dog owners. If you are aware of who is allowing their dogs to foul the fields please

contact me, in confidence, and I will contact the dog warden.

Stay safe.

LATEST COVID GUIDANCE (AT 16TH SEPTEMBER 2020)

Please make sure you follow the latest government guidance, Covid-19 is still very present and

government guidance may change. The current information is below.

SOCIAL DISTANCING

To reduce the risk of catching or spreading coronavirus, try to keep at least 2 metres away from people you

do not live with. Where you cannot stay 2 metres apart you should stay more than 1 metre apart, as well as

taking extra steps to stay safe. For example:

• wear a face covering: on public transport and in many indoor spaces, you must wear a face covering

by law, unless you are exempt

• move outdoors, where it is safer and there is more space

• if indoors, make sure rooms are well ventilated by keeping windows and doors open

You do not need to socially distance from anyone in your household, meaning the people you live with. You

also do not need to socially distance from someone you’re in an established relationship with, or anyone in

your legally-permitted support bubble if you are in one.

SEEING FRIENDS AND FAMILY

When seeing friends and family you do not live with you should:

• meet in groups of 6 or less

• follow social distancing rules

• limit how many different people you see socially over a short period of time

• meet people outdoors where practical: meeting people outdoors is safer than meeting people

indoors because fresh air provides better ventilation

There are exceptions where groups can be larger than 6 people. For a list of these exceptions please visit:

https://www.gov.uk/coronavirus

RULES IN OTHER VENUES AND ACTIVITIES

As well as the exemptions, venues following COVID-19 secure guidelines will be able to continue to host

more people in total - such as religious services in places of worship - but no one should mix in a group of

greater than 6. This includes places like a pub, shop, leisure venue, restaurant or place of worship. When

you visit one of these places you should:

• follow the limits on the number of other people you should meet with as a group - no more than

six people unless you all live together

(or are in the same support

bubble)

• avoid social interaction with anyone

outside the group you are

with, even if you see other people

you know

• provide your contact details to

the organiser so that you can be

contacted if needed by the NHS

Test and Trace programme

We received the message below from a lady who lives in Cross Houses, she asked that we didn’t identify her

or her address. It was explained that this situation has been going on a long time and despite visits from the

dog warden etc it continues. Ed.

Why are some people so selfish?

I’ve recently moved to Cross Houses from North Shropshire and absolutely love the place. We moved just

before lockdown so we really appreciated the surrounding countryside on our daily exercise walk.

As lockdown was lifted we explored further and my two (football mad) sons found the playing fields down

the lane by Lower Cross. Well, I hardly saw them at the start of the “real” school holiday period as they

played down there a lot but they were constantly coming back from playing football with dog pooh on their

trainers or worse on their clothes and skin.

My husband went down with the boys to pick up the waste from the football pitch area each time they went

but eventually we stopped them from going.

Why, oh why are some people so selfish. We have a dog, and have met others in the village who also have

dogs, and we all carry bags and all pick up after our dogs.

How difficult is it to keep an eye on your dog and pick up after it and place the waste in a bin?

We miss club as much as you do. Hopefully we

can re-start early in 2021. Until then, stay safe.

Volunteers sought for Community Speedwatch

What is Community Speed Watch?

Community Speed Watch (CSW) schemes are coordinated by the police but managed and run by volunteers

in the community. The scheme enables local people to take an active role in road safety and make

their community safer. The aim of CSW is NOT to catch as many speeding drivers as possible. It aims to

encourage motorists to drive at a safe and appropriate speed, reduce speed in areas of concern, reeducate

drivers about the dangers of speeding and address concerns from local residents about cars

speeding through their neighbourhood. Our scheme covers Atcham and Cross Houses.

How does CSW work?

At specified safe locations, volunteers monitor the speed of passing vehicles with a hand-held speed detection

device. Offending vehicles’ details are recorded on a log sheet, including the names and signatures

of the volunteers witnessing the offence, the make / model and registration number of the vehicle

and the speed recorded by the hand-held device. Log sheets should be submitted to safer neighbourhood

teams within seven days, who will arrange for warning letters to be sent to the registered keepers

with advice on safer driving. Schemes will be evaluated to ensure they are having a positive impact on

vehicle speed, driver behaviour and community reassurance. There must be at least six volunteers in

each CSW scheme. Speed checks must be conducted by at least three volunteers. The area must have a

30 or 40 mph speed restriction.

Can anyone become a volunteer?

Schemes are open to anyone aged 18 or over.

Volunteers will only be accepted onto a scheme

once appropriate checks have been carried out.

Volunteers must be able to make a regular commitment

to carry out activity and must adhere to

the scheme’s safety rules at all times. Although

reasonable adjustments can be made, volunteers

should be mindful of the physical nature of the

role. Training will be provided covering areas such

as health and safety, legislation and how to use

the speed detection equipment.

Want to get involved?

Watch and an informal chat about our local

scheme please contact Sue on 01743 761355.

,

Dear Friends,

It appears we have come to another crunch point on our Covid Journey

with another sway of Government announcements and the number of

people we can be in the company of at any given time. I don't know

about you, but it is all deeply unsettling and because i'm personally

terrified of compromising my sister and parents, we ourselves as a

family have decided not to go down to Oxford next week, that is hugely

disappointing for them and indeed us, as we are desperate to see one another in person.

I only wish the Government could get on top of the testing system that is now genuinely overwhelmed with

people who need tests and are unable to receive one, with some testing units like someone I know in

London, where they phoned to book a test for their 6 year old son who has a cough and was told that they

are only receiving people over the age of the 18 and to ring back in 4 days! In the meantime life for them is

further complicated as their youngest son now misses out on his first full day at school, as technically the

whole house needs to self-isolate.

Over the past week I have felt for our young people who are being blamed for the recent spike, but it was

inevitable that at this point on our Covid Journey with schools and colleges reopening and with some pubs,

restaurants and bars not adhering to social distancing rules, there would be an increase in Covid

cases. However, it's very easy to point fingers and we pray for our Scientists, Testers, Trackers, NHS Staff and

Public Health who are working so hard at this time and ask that they be given all the resources they need to

get the Virus under control.

Let us also not forget those areas of the country where spikes have been identified are often in deprived

areas where social distancing, especially within families and groups creates greater challenges for a variety of

different reasons and the more fortunate in society are often quick to make judgements about them without

having all the facts in front of them.

All in all it could be fair to say we are still in the 'thick of bit of a pickle' and everything in life at present is a

bit like a juggling act that is fast changing and we are spending our time identifying what balls to keep up in

the air and what balls we have no alternative but to drop for the sake of our sanity, safety and consideration

to others.

For many years now I have always kept the Serenity Prayer in my Prayer Book that reads: 'God grant me the

serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know

the difference.'

The Other Serenity Prayer reads: 'God grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change, the

courage to change the one I can, and the wisdom to knows it's me.'

We are all having to make perpetual changes in ways large and small at this time as we continue on our

Covid Journey. Today may we embrace afresh the Serenity Prayer both old and new so that we would greater

honour one another and seek the common good.

With my prayerful good wishes,

Matthew Stafford (Revd) - Rector of The Wenlock Group of Parishes

The Restoration of the Montgomery Canal

The Restoration of the Montgomery Canal Project

is seeking volunteers for two stages of the

upcoming work, there are two main opportunities.

The Project is to rebuild a canal bridge near

Crickheath, near Oswestry.

The first relates to enabling works starting on Sept

21st and carrying on into October where a need to

build a temporary track for local heavy vehicle

users is required (as they can’t use alternative

routes, as cars can) due to the necessity to close

the lane where the bridge will be . In September

work will begin on fencing off parts of adjacent

fields and putting down a crushed stone trackway.

This work doesn’t call for any special skills and so

would suit anyone interested in working outdoors

with a congenial group in doing something useful.

The second phase relates to the actual bridge work

– due to start in mid-March 2021 (subject to

agreeing paperwork with Highways etc ). This is

where people with special skills would be able to

join in – but there would still be a need for general

purpose helpers. The project does not want to

exhaust people, nor does it expect people to come

every day. So the intention is to build up a group of

say 25 on the basis that we need 5 people each day

and so each person does one day a week – or a

variant on that.

This work is part of restoring the last two miles of

the Canal in Shropshire for the benefit of people,

wildlife and heritage, as well as benefiting local businesses. Here is your chance to work on a long lasting project

which you can show your children and others and say “I did that!”

For more information on the different phases of the project please visit http://restorethemontgomerycanal.uk/

and if you are interested in joining then please email john.dodwell@rolandon.com or call on 07802 961485.

Recycling is currently the best way of turning materials back into something useful and

avoiding our waste ending up in landfill or being burnt.

The UK recycling system isn’t perfect. It’s difficult for us to recycle some types of plastic but

there is a huge amount of work being done to improve UK recycling infrastructure. We need

to continue this momentum for the environment and the economy. Plastic is a valuable

resource that we need to keep in use, and out of our natural world.

If we don’t recycle plastic, it will end up in landfill, be burnt, or, worst case, end up in the

natural environment.

What do you do with your batteries?

Did you know you can recycle all the batteries you use up at home?

Just put them out in a clear bag (like a sandwich bag) at the side of

your recycling box.

Don't want to keep batteries in your house for

two weeks? You can recycle batteries at local

supermarkets and shops that sell batteries.

October 2020

Dear All,

A note from us to you to say thank you yet again for your continued patience and understanding.

end of COVID-19 remains very much uncertain for all of us. We want you to know that although

the ways in which you access us might be different, we continue to be here and working

to help treat, help and support you all,

From all at Much Wenlock and Cressage Medical Practice

A Bit of Housekeeping….

Prescription Requests

Can we give a polite reminder that the designated prescription telephone line is manned between

10:30 and 12:00 Monday to Friday, and that if you call outside of these hours our reception

staff will be unable to process your request. We appreciate that this may be difficult

to contact the practice during these hours, so medications can also be ordered online via Patient

Access which can be accessed on our practice website

www.muchwenlockandcressagemp.co.uk. Unfortunately we are unable to accept requests for

medications sent directly to our practice email address.

Testing of Urine Samples

We ask that the only urine samples brought to the surgery are those requested by a clinician.

Our reception team can only accept these samples and they must be clearly labelled and with

a completed form. The form can be downloaded and printed from the practice website or

completed in the practice. If you feel that you need a sample to be tested we kindly ask that

you complete an eConsult (link available on the practice website) or book a telephone consultation

with our Nurse Triage team.

Blood Test Results

If calling the practice for blood test results, please telephone after 14:00 Monday to Friday.

We ask that you do this to avoid longer queueing on the telephone system and peak times

during the day.

We hope that you understand that these changes and timings are done to ensure we are able

to provide the best clinical care for all of our patients, whilst ensuring we use our resources

effectively and giving you the best possible experience as patients.

Flu Clinics

This year we will obviously have to do things a little bit differently. What hasn’t changed is our aim to

vaccinate all those eligible in a safe and efficient environment. COVID-19 has posed challenges

throughout the year and flu clinics are no different. We need to find a way to provide mass

vaccinations whilst ensuring social distancing between patients and minimal risk of any viral

transmission between patients and clinicians. A ‘Drive Thru’ clinic would allow just this and is how

we hope to conduct our first two flu clinics.

General Practices have been advised by the Government and Public Health England as to the order of

vaccine administration. The first priority groups to be vaccinated will be:

• Extremely high risk or ‘Shielding’ patients and their household members

• Pregnant Women

• Care home residents

The next groups to be vaccinated are:

• Patients over 65 years of age

• Patients under 65 years of age with long term conditions

The final group to be vaccinated will be:

• Patients aged 50 – 65 years of age with no pre-existing conditions

To find out if you are eligible for a flu vaccination please visit www.nhs.uk

Clinic Dates

26 th September 2020 at 09:30 - 16:30, William Brookes School, Much Wenlock

10 th October 2020 at 09:30 – 16:30, Williams Brookes School, Much Wenlock

Booking

To book a flu vaccination in one of the above clinics please ring the surgery. We ask that you call in

the afternoon Tuesday – Friday to avoid busy times on our phone lines and enable us to process

urgent patient calls outside of these times.

Preparation

If you are unwell or have a temperature please DO NOT ATTEND the clinic. Your appointment can be

rearranged for a time when it is safer for you to be vaccinated.

When attending a Drive Thru Clinic please

• Have your name clearly displayed on the dashboard to enable our administrative team to

identify you quickly within the records

• Ensure that your upper arm is easily accessible to administer the vaccination

• When asked to stop at the vaccination tent please ensure the handbrake has been safely

applied and take care when pulling away from the area

We look forward to seeing you in a Flu Clinic soon!!

News from Christ Church C.E. Primary School

A Great Start to the New Normal!

Thank you to our parents for such a supportive start to the new school year. It is great to have our

children back, they are enjoying learning and being with their friends again. Our attendance at the

start of term has consistently been about 95% (national average was 88%). We hope that our social

distancing measures for drop off and pick up make it easy for anyone coming along Sheinton Road.

We have a one-way system along the playground – with parents coming in the large silver gate and

leaving by the pedestrian gate by Oak Class and Childrensworld. We have staggered arrivals and

departures, so that parents and grandparents picking up are able to socially distance.

The children are in bubbles (their classes) and have playtimes and lunchtimes with their own class to

minimise contact with other children outside their bubbles. My huge thanks to our team who are all

working hard to make school life as normal as possible whilst thinking all the time about making

routines in the classroom as ‘Covid-safe’ as possible. For example, each child now has their own

skipping rope for playtime, their own pencil case and equipment and each class have their own zone

for playing on the playground and field. Mrs Chatfield and Mrs Toone are very busy at lunchtimes

cleaning all the commonly touched areas around school and Mrs Law and Mrs Thomas do the same

at the end of the day. Thank you to them for their hard work in keeping us all as safe as possible.

Parents have been fantastic – they have been seeking tests for children when symptoms of coughs,

high temperatures or loss of taste and smell appear. However, as anyone who has ever worked in a

school will know, the beginning of term often heralds huge amounts of colds and coughs. Thankfully

at the time of writing all our tests have come back negative. But I would like to reassure everyone in

the village that the parents are taking symptoms seriously and seeking tests, even though we know

the current testing situation means they are not always easy to access.

Tracey Cansdale,

Headteacher

We love our outdoor learning. Mr Bott has been helping us

expand our Forest School area as we now have even more

regular use of this great resource. Maple Class made

skeletons out of twigs in one of their Forest School sessions

as part of their ‘Bones and Bodies’ topic.

More details of our current learning is always on the

website: www.christchurchcressage.co.uk

If you have a child who will be 4 between 1 st September

2020 and 31 st August 2021 and would like to find out more

about our Reception Class, then please do email

admin@christchurch.shropshire.sch.uk or telephone the

school on 01952 510383. We are the catchment school for

Cressage, Cross Houses, Harley, Eaton Constantine and the

surrounding area.
