April 16, at 8:30am & 11:00am
Holy Week is approaching and
with it, one of the most important weeks
in the Christian year. I hope that you are
planning to be a part of the various
services and events during that week.
On April 9, during our one service that
day at 11:00 am, our chancel choir will be
presenting “Come Walk With Me,” a
Palm/Passion Cantata with costumes
made by Betsy Sibert. We will still gather
for Sunday school that day at 9:45 am,
but we will not have an 8:30 am service.
Following the cantata we will gather in
the Children’s Education Building for a
covered dish luncheon. Meat will be
provided, but plan to bring a few side
dishes to share! When the meal is over,
our children will enjoy an Easter egg
hunt on the church property.
During the week following the
cantata, we will journey together to the
cross. Instead of having our normal
Wednesday night fellowship meal and
activities we will gather instead on
Maundy Thursday, April 13 for a simple
meal at 5:45 pm followed by a service of
communion and remembrance of Jesus’
Last Supper with his disciples in the
Children’s Education Building. The next
evening, on April 14, we will gather in
the sanctuary at 6:00 pm for a Tenebrae
Service focusing on the last words of
Christ. This service is a somber and
meditative service that will include
various readings and simple
congregational responses. It is meant to
lead us to the cross and help us to more
fully understand its meaning. Childcare
will be provided for both services and we
hope you will join us.
Having followed Jesus all the way
to his death on the cross on Friday, our
celebrations on Easter Sunday, April 16,
will be that much more meaningful! We
will begin with a Sunrise Service at 6:30
am at Hunting Ridge Retreat. Then, our
regular service times at 8:30 am and
11:00 am will follow in the sanctuary. At
each Easter service we will celebrate the
Good News that our God has broken
the power of sin and death, offering us
new life and new hope!
I hope you will plan to journey
with us as we walk to the cross together.
We have created postcards available in
each narthex so that you can remember
the dates and services. Feel free to grab
a few and invite your friends and
neighbors! It is with thankfulness and
joy that we are reminded of God’s love
and deep care for each of us during this
Holy Week.
With hope,
“Grace Notes” by Lori
“Carrying His own cross, He went out to the place of the skull (which in Aramaic is
called Golgotha). Here they crucified Him.” John 19:17, 18
As we move through these days of Lent and prepare for Holy week, the hymn “When I
Survey the Wondrous Cross” comes to mind because of its personal expression of gratitude
and love. It was written in 1707 by Isaac Watts while he was preparing for a Communion
service. Of his 600 plus hymns, it is one of his more widely known and beloved
texts.
Spend a few moments pondering this hymn that so vividly expresses our Savior’s dying
love for us.
“When I Survey the Wondrous Cross”
When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ, my God;
All the vain things that charm me most-I sacrifice them to His blood.
See, from His head, His hands, His feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down;
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown?
Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.
When you are…..
Worried- Matthew 8:19-31
Anxious- Philippians 4:4-9
Unhappy- Colossians 3:12-17
Lonely- Psalm 23
Depressed- Psalm 27
Lacking in Faith- Exodus 14
In Need of Courage- Joshua 1
Struggling with Loss- Luke 15
Seeking Peace- Matthew 11:25-30

Sherry’s “Son” Shine Notes
Watch Me Learn
From Early Years-Working together for a great start
“I can say my ABC’s!” “Listen to me count to 10!” Children this age are eager to show you what they know.
Keep the learning-and the excitement going with these suggestions:
Read along with me: Encourage a love of reading by making your child an active participant. If a story has
repeated phrases, put him in charge of reading them. Pause before the last word of each line in a nursery rhyme,
and have him supply it. Turn the tables at bedtime: give him a book he knows by heart, and ask him to read to
you.
Make writing an everyday thing: Offer your youngster meaningful opportunities to write letters and words. If she
pretends to be a rock star, request her autograph. Or if she draws a birthday card for a relative, ask her to dictate
what she wants to say, and use a highlighter to print her words. Then, she, could trace over the letters with a
crayon or marker.
Just add math-to everything: Playing with math concepts will develop your child’s number sense. Have him sort
and count beads to make bracelets. In the grocery store, challenge him to spot every number, 1-10, on signs and
labels. At snack time, he might explore shapes by connecting pineapple chunks or strawberries with toothpicks to
form flat shapes (squares, triangles, rectangles) or 3-D ones (cubes, pyramids).
THANK YOU…THANK YOU…THANK YOU!!!!
The staff and students of “Son” Shine Learning would like to extend a huge preschool hug and
thank you to Bill and Kitty Shendow for their very generous donation to the needs of the
Children’s Education Building by purchasing five new air conditioner units for the classrooms.
We will think of both of you when we are nice and cool in the warm months.
Blessings,
The Easter story is such an important lesson for children of all ages to hear for the first time and then to hear over
and over again in a variety of ways. We often learn best when our activities are supported by visual prompts. These
yummy cookies represent the empty tomb that was found on Easter morning leading us to know that HE Has
Risen…
Resurrection Cookies
(To be started Easter eve)
1 ziplock bag
A rolling pin
1 cup whole pecans
3 egg whites
1 tsp. vinegar
A pinch of salt
1 cup sugar
Tape
Bible
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Do not skip this first (very important) step!
2. Begin following the chart below. Read the scripture to the child and discuss each part
of making the cookies and how it relates to the Resurrection.
Cookie Instructions
Place pecans in ziplock bag
and let the child break up
nuts
Let the child smell the
vinegar and pit in into the
mixing bowl
Add egg whites to vinegar
Sprinkle salt into the child’s
hand and let them taste it.
Brush remaining salt into
bowl
Add sugar to the bowl
Beat ingredients on high
speed for 15 minutes or until
stiff peaks form
Fold in crushed nuts and
drop teaspoon sizes of
mixture onto a cookie sheet
covered with wax paper
Place cookie sheet in oven
and turn it OFF!!! Give the
child a piece of tape to seal
the oven door
On Resurrection morning,
open the oven and eat
cookies, taking notice of the
cracked surface and that the
cookies are hollow
Biblical Correlation &
Explanation
Jesus was arrested and
beaten by the Roman
soldiers
When Jesus was thirsty on
the cross, the soldiers gave
him vinegar to drink
Eggs represent life. Jesus
gave His life to give life to us
Salty tears were shed by
Jesus’ followers
The “sweet” part of the story
is that Jesus dies because He
loves Us! He wants us to
know and belong to Him
White represents our sins
being cleansed by Jesus
The mounds represent the
rocky tomb where Jesus’
body was left
Jesus was placed in His tomb
and it was sealed
On the first Resurrection,
Jesus’ followers were amazed
to find the tomb open and
empty
A New CEB Steam Table
The Children’s Education Building (CEB) kitchen steam table
must be replaced. It is very old and worn out, as it was installed
in the late 1950’s when the CEB was built.
$4,000.00 is the cost for the replacement. The E.T. Clark Mens
Bible Class has decided to head up the effort to raise the funds
for this project.
Anyone who would like to contribute to this effort, please send
your donations to our Church and mark them “FBC CEB
Kitchen Fund”.
Thank you for your assistance with this project.
Sanctuary Arrangements
Sanctuary Arrangements are needed for this year. If you would
like to honor a birthday or anniversary or place an arrangement
in memory of a loved one, please call the church office.
Sanctuary arrangement order forms are also available in each
narthex. The cost of each arrangement is $35. The arrangement
may be taken home or delivered by a deacon to one of our
hospitalized or homebound members .
Volunteers for Our Homebound Members
Volunteers are needed to provide assistance to several
homebound church members who no longer drive or have
family close by to help. If you’re willing to help take the member
to the store, a medical appointment or run an errand for them,
please call the church office (662-5367). Your help would mean
so much to someone unable to accomplish simple tasks on their
own.
