Exhibition Edition- Digital Rights
Afrophilia Magazine curated a special photo exhibition expounding on the concept of freedom from the perspective of young photographers from South Africa, Morocco, Kenya and Nigeria. The special exhibition, aptly named "If I were free... If we were free..." was curated at the 2019 Forum on Internet Freedoms in Africa. The annual conference was hosted by the Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA) and the Ethiopian Ministry of Innovation and Technology in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This 6th landmark congress explored the highs and lows of the African digital landscape from 1999-2019. Enjoy the update on the forum's finer points and the heartfelt visuals from the exhibition, which was a special first for the progressive community.

THE EXHIBITION
This photograph is of a tall wooden statue at the
public gallery of the Constitution Hill Precinct in
Johannesburg, South Africa. This once was the site of
the infamous Old Fort, Women's Jail and Number
Four; where tens of thousands of people were
imprisoned in its 100-year history. Former detainees
include Nelson Mandela, Winnie Madikizela- Mandela,
Mahatma Ghandi, Joe Slovo and Albertina Sisulu.
Today, in contrast, the precinct houses the highest
court in the land, The Constitutional Court. Here any
citizen can challenge the constitution or petition for
additions to it. Beyond the court, the precinct houses
museums, legal aid offices and its grounds are used
by NGOs, for peaceful protests and fundraiser events
and concerts.
"If we were free " presents the unambigous and
unwavering reality of the bare bones we need to begin
constructing the Africa that we want.

This image was taken out of respect for the
institution, the beauty of what it symbolises, and the
challenge it poses to everyone. Its beauty lies in its
creative and respectful encapsulation of transitioning
from bondage to freedom. The challenge it poses is
for institutions and people to not be passive. The
challenge to create and live up to laws that empower
people and the challenge to not be discouraged by
unpleasant circumstances as we continually strive for
better. This image represents the towering heights
that we can achieve, if we choose to be the best
version of ourselves, daily.
