The telephone in Sweden
The telegraph and the telephone were introduced during the 19 th century and by
the beginning of the 20 th century there was an extensive cable network linking
the larger towns of Sweden. By that time, the telegraph and telephone had
become routine tools of business and government as well as of upper-class life.
It took a further 40 or 50 years before telephones became common in the homes
of ordinary Swedes.
Skansen is illustrating the impact of the telephone at the beginning of the 20 th
century with period telephones in homes and workplaces, a telephone exchange
from a small community and telephone wires supported on poles at the side of
the road and running across the rooftops. A walk from the Post Office will show
visitors the most striking aspects of the telephone’s introduction.
