There are shortcomings in terms of escape routes in as many as 40% of the
premises. These vary and in some cases are very easy to rectify. In operations
with fewer than 80 beds there are shortcomings concerning escape routes in
50% of cases. The corresponding figure for hotels with more than 80 beds is
29%.
Fire fighting appliances is the only aspect which this investigation finds
acceptable – only 10% have shortcomings within this area.
Even structural fire protection measures can be improved at minimum
expense. There are shortcomings within almost half of the premises checked.
If door closers, magnetically opening doors and fire cell sealing faults are
rectified the number of approved structural premises would increase to 72.
That these types of faults are not detected is connected to the fact that the
systematic protection work is inadequate.
Are then the results of this investigation as bad as they seem? To an extent,
yes, but my impression is that many of the faults can be rectify at relatively
low expense. Properly organised systematic fire protection work and some
structural improvements would give many of the businesses that were
checked acceptable fire protection.
