(Un)lucky slams?
hans kelder – the netherlands
The Dutch ladies team went to
Sweden to play the Chairmans
Cup. After 15 rounds in the
Swiss tournament, they did not
qualify for the knock out. In the
second chance, they were also
not able to qualify.
The Danish ladies did qualify for the
knock out, but lost the first round. Both
teams agreed to play a match against
each other. The Dutch ladies are playing
here with the team that will represent
the Netherlands in Beijing, later this year
on the World Mind Sport Games. Anke
Wijma and Claudia van der Salm will
make there debut there for the Dutch
ladies team.
In the match between Denmark
and the Netherlands were three very
interesting grandslam boards, bidden by
Wijma-Van der Salm.
The double over 3 Spades meant points
and 4NT showed 25-26. 5 Hearts
showed 2 aces and West decided to bid
7NT, that was obvious too optimistic. If
you bid that high, you have to play well.
Afer a spade lead, Van der Salm took the
ace and played a club to the jack. After
two rounds of spades and four diamonds,
south was squeezed. This board was
played at the anchor table (Both team
played with three pairs so one pair had
The Dutch Womens Team: Claudia van der Salm, Anke Wijma, Hans Kelder (coach), Bep
Vriend and Carla Arnolds. (Jet Pasman and Anneke Simons are missing in the picture.)
to compare their scores with the other
two pairs) and the Dutch won 26 imps.
On the other tables they played 6NT.
Of course 7NT is too high, but after 3
spades by North, the contract looks a
little bit “better”.
On the next board, Van der Salm-Wijma
bid 7 diamonds and that contract was
too high again. Anke Wijma guessed
the spades well and made this terrible
contract. On the anchor table, the
Danish ladies played 6NT so the Dutch
ladies won 12 imps. But Arnolds-Vriend
went down in 7 diamonds, thus the
Danish tam won 17 imps back for a total
of 5 imps on this board. Arnolds knew
the spades length in East and played the
king of spades and a finessed.
Both boards were very lucky for
Wijma-Van der Salm, but the last one
very unlucky, although this contract
could have been made by Anke Wijma.
Wijma-Van der Salm bid 7 Hearts and
that’s a great contract. As you can see,
declarer had to decide if she would ruff
a spade or a club because the hearts
were 4-1. She decided to ruff a club and
the contract went one down. The Danish
ladies won 14 imps on the board.
Wijma-Van der Salm played a great
match and that gives them confidence
for playing in Beijing.
The Dutch ladies won the match by
235-203 imps.
Many thanks to Micke Melander
and the Swedish Bridgefederation for
arranging this match.
