also had the opportunity to visit nearby colleges such as
Smith, Clark, WPI, Amherst, Mt Holyoke and Berklee
College of Music. This was a great opportunity to endow
ourselves with a wealth of information to share with our
students and to counsel them more effectively.
A hectic start to the Fall Semester
Fall semester started in a hectic manner as we have a bigger
graduating class this year (202 students). About 120 of them
have stated interest in overseas universities, so we have our
hands full. We already had three applicants by October 15th to Oxford and Cambridge Universities in England. Applicants
with early deadlines followed with the November 1th or
15th deadlines and as of December 9th , 59 students have
already sent applications. The news arrive mid-December
and we all keep our fingers crossed for good results.
Another busy time in the fall was during the CIS Education
Day in October. About 85 universities were able to meet
with students and parents at the Hilton Hotel between 13:00-
17:00 on October 2nd . Before and after the fair, our school
hosted a record number of visitors from colleges. The visits
came to an end with the Brown University, Columbia
University and Wellesley College presentation at Koç. As
a school we were very proud to see ‹rem Yörük (KOL'08)
on the cover of the Wellesley brochure. Additionally, we
were informed by the admissions representative that ‹rem
was chosen by her peers as one of the 8 students who were
selected to be on the Admissions Committee. This is a great
honor and we sincerely congratulate ‹rem Yörük as we look
forward to receiving such news from our alumni around the
world.
The Koç Counseling Team attended the CIS Forum in
Monaco during the November Bayram Holiday. This twoday
event was an opportunity to connect with various
university representatives and advocate for our early
applicants. Also, together with Joan Liu, a former Koç
counselor, and Aylin fievyo, counselor at Hisar Schools and
a former Koç School translator, Larry Turns and Asuman
Okman presented at a workshop called “It Takes a Turkish
Village” where they talked about the importance of
collaborative work when setting up a college counseling
office at a new school. The session was well-attended and
received a special recognition at the closing ceremony.
As the year ends, seniors are getting ready to finalize their
regular overseas applications. We wish them all the best
and hope that they realize their dreams, be it in Turkey,
U.S., Canada, U.K., Europe or elsewhere.
