THE CANONICAL CORRELATION BETWEEN MORPHOLOGICAL
CHARACTERISTICS ALONG WITH FUNCTIONAL SKILLS, AND THE RESULTS OF
THE MOTOR COORDINATION OF JUDOISTS
ABSTRACT
The research was carried out with the aim of determining the canonical correlations between
morphological characteristics and functional skills, and the results for the motor coordination of
judoists. The sample of participants consisted of 33 young judoists, elementary schoolchildren aged
11 and 12 from East Sarajevo, who took part in judo training. In order for the children to be selected
for the study, they had to have been members of a judo school for at least two years, they had to be
in good health and had to voluntarily agree to participate in the research. A total of 10
anthropometric measurements of the morphological characteristics defining longitudinal
dimensionality of the skeleton were used: body height, arm length, leg length; transversal
dimensionality of the skeleton: shoulder width, pelvic width; circular dimensionality and body
mass: forearm volume, thorax volume, upper leg volume and body mass. The functional abilities
consisted of the following tests: heart rate frequency after load, the Margaria test and vital lung
capacity. Motor coordination was evaluated by means of three tests: agility in the air, coordination
with a baton and agility on the ground. Following a canonical correlation analysis, the results that
were obtained indicate a statistically significant canonical relation between morphological
characteristics and functional skills, and the results for the motor coordination of judoists.
Key words: morphological characteristics, functional skills, motor coordination, judoists.
