Allyson Macdonald is a professor at the Iceland University of Education. She completed an<br />
honours degree in physics in South Africa (1976) and has a doctoral degree in science education<br />
from Oregon State University (1981). She has carried out research in science education and in<br />
the use of information and communication technology in schools, particularly in the areas of<br />
curricul<strong>um</strong> evaluation, development and implementation. E-mail: allyson@khi.is<br />
Eggert Lárusson is a lecturer in geography and the teaching of geography at the Iceland University<br />
of Education. He took his B.Sc. degree in geography in 1974 at the University of Iceland and a<br />
B.Ed. at the Iceland University of Education in 1982. In 1984 he was awarded his Ph.D. from<br />
Durham University in England. For most of his professional life Eggert has been a teacher in<br />
secondary schools. He has been a lecturer at the Iceland University of Education since 2003. His<br />
main research interests are in researching science education in Icelandic compulsory schools.<br />

Einar Guðmundsson is an associate professor at the University of Iceland. He graduated with a<br />
B.Sc. degree in biology and a B.A. in psychology from the University of Iceland, and M.Sc. and<br />
fil.dr. in psychology from the University of Lund. His main research interests within the field<br />
of education have been international comparisons of students’ academic achievement, school<br />
effectiveness, national examinations, learning disabilities, and construction and standardization of<br />

Emilía Guðmundsdóttir is a psychologist at the State Diagnostic and Counselling Centre. She<br />

Guðmundur Engilbertsson is an adjunct lecturer and consultant at the University of Akureyri in<br />
the Faculty of Education and at the School Development Centre. His teaching is mainly in the field<br />
of teaching strategies, assessment, and methods. His work at the School Development Centre is<br />
mainly concerned with the development of teaching methods and assessment, with emphasis on<br />

Hafþór Guðjónsson is an associate professor at the Iceland University of Education. He received<br />
