Greetings Alumni,
I always look forward to writing this letter to tell you about
Fisher’s achievements. You should be proud of your college
and I hope Fisher is never far from your mind.
This Fall we will welcome the Class of 2014. These students are
arriving at a Fisher that is experiencing remarkable growth. The most
notable event of the last year is that Fisher earned reaccreditation,
which caps off ten years of successes. Fisher launched a B.A in
Communication & Media Studies and a B.S in Human Services.
The College added concentrations to the longstanding B.S in
Management that capitalize on our strengths and respond to the
marketplace. We cheer a championship-level athletics program
and have moved confidently into co-education. Enrollment is at a
record high. Alumni are taking advantage of Fisher for Life and
the recently-unveiled M.Ed and M.B.A programs in partnership
with Endicott College.
source of this energy. To all of you who supported the Fisher Fund –
thank you – your gift made a difference. To all of you who mentor
students or visited campus – keep coming back, and continue to
find ways to use your experience to benefit Fisher.
Change is happening. It is the hallmark of Fisher. I appreciate
all that you are doing to define this newest chapter of your
college, and I encourage you to stay in touch with us.
Fisher completed its decennial reaccreditation site visit in April
2010. Noting the 14 months of work that went into the visit,
President McGovern said, “I am indebted to faculty and staff,
students, and alumni, for their dedication to Fisher. We
embraced the spotlight and showed the Visiting Team how
special and forward-thinking Fisher is.” Team members were
effusive in praising three alumni – Mary-Ellen Oberhauser
’64, Anita Salmu ’88, and John L. Sullivan ‘80/’08 – for
the Fisher spirit they displayed in a private lunch.
..........................................................................................
Program Director of Communications & Media Studies
Dr. Michael Meadows was invited to serve a three-year term
on the editorial board of Women’s Studies in Communication,
an academic journal that advances the understanding of the
relationship between communication and gender.
Commencement
The 200 members of the Class of 2010
2010
marched four blocks to John Hancock
Hall as part of Fisher’s 106th
Commencement. An animated address
was delivered by Jim Braude, the host of “Broadside with Jim
Braude,” a weekly news and analysis show on NECN, and
co-host of a daytime radio talk show with Margery Eagan of
The Boston Herald on 96.9FM.
For being a stalwart supporter of Fisher – as a phone-a-thon
caller, a key member of the Alumni Board, and a class leader
who mobilized her class for its 20th Reunion – Anita Salmu
’88 was awarded a bachelor’s degree honoris causa. Richard
Levitt, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, said, “For
Anita, ‘giving back’ is a powerful theme. Anita’s experience at
Fisher inspired her to be involved in politics; to champion the
arts; to support teachers; and to be the change she imagines for
Boston. Anita is showing alumni, and this year’s graduating
class, that Fisher must remain a vital part of their lives.”
Associate Professor of Humanities Dr. Danielle Herget, Resident
Director Johnny Hurley, Kayla Brown ‘11, and Admissions
Office Manager Jessica Warner ’08/’10 assisted with the
direction of three Drama Club productions – Steel Magnolias,
The Laramie Project, and Rock Through the Ages.
Fisher Honors Teresa Howe, Program Director of
the Fashion Institute, Upon Well-Deserved Retirement
“She will be remembered for her elegance, her passion for the
industry, her unabashed commitment to our aspiring designers,
and her friendship,” said President McGovern. After two
decades spent building a design program of unparalleled quality,
Terry leaves Fisher having accomplished everything she set
out to do.
At the celebration held in her honor, Terry said, “It has been quite
a ride, and I am grateful to everyone at Fisher – but especially my
students – for their inspiration and enthusiasm.”
Fisher’s Center for Leadership in Public Service, in conjunction
with the Division of Management & Public Service, hosted a
panel featuring three prominent Boston business leaders,
including Lyndia Downie, President & Executive Director,
Pine Street Inn; Kathy Dawley, President, Maguire
Associates; and Scott Ragusa, President, Contract
Businesses, Winter Wyman. The Center also conducted
Linda Doliber '69, North Shore Kitchens (MA),provided Fisher
seniors with critical professional advice to help them get hired
after graduation. Students were given the opportunity to do a
practice interview with regional managers and recruiters. Both
alums had not been to campus since graduation, but liked what
they saw. Nichole commented on how surprised she was at the
students' focus and preparation for their careers. If you are interested
in mentoring a student, pencil in Friday, April 22, 2011
Jane Sutton, a writing tutor in ACE since 1999, has written her
seventh children’s book. Don’t Call Me Sidney (Dial, illustrated
by Renata Gallio) is a picture book about a big-hearted
pig who aspires to be a poet. Dismayed that the only rhyme
for Sidney is kidney, he changes his name to the more utilitarian
“Joe,” with some amusing consequences, while eventually
learning the art of compromise.
Fashion has defined Fisher for more than 60
years. The Fashion Show remains an annual
rite for emerging designers. Fisher’s proximity to
trendy Newbury Street and the fashion Mecca
of New York City gives students the chance to
learn from the very best in the world of fashion.
The nearly 600 graduates of the fashion
design program can attest to Terry’s talents.
Please send Terry your good wishes by
Alternative Spring Break
The words “Spring Break” are synonymous
with bikinis and Animal House behavior. For
twelve Fisher students, however, it was a
chance to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity
and be the agents of change that the Facebook
generation is known for.
College Librarian Joshua McKain and
Dr. Ann Clarke, Director of Spiritual Life &
Outreach Programs, led the charge in Hillsborough
County, Florida as advisors to The
Common Good, Fisher’s community service
club, and the Multicultural Club. These
student leaders are ambassadors for the
College in countless on-campus and nonprofit-organized
service endeavors in and
around Boston.
Besides gaining hands-on building and landscaping skills, the trip
helped students learn the values of volunteerism and the importance
of testing oneself outside of a comfort zone. For some students, they
met classmates for the first time and became lifelong friends. “I
learned a lot about classmates that I normally never get to meet,”
said Jonathan Koziara ‘11, President of The Common Good.
“Even though we didn’t get to meet the families, it was cool that we
affected their lives.” Alyssa May ’13 said, “I had never traveled
without my family before.” For Lesley Ulloa ’10, working outside
in the heat (and with lizards) gave her new appreciation for her
father’s workday as a contractor. “We worked hard, but we had
fun too,” Lesley said. Josh and Ann made sure that students got to
see Ybor City, the beach, experience some
Florida nightlife, and play foosball and ping pong.
This year’s destination is still being considered,
though The Common Good would like
to remind alumni that their assistance – either
as volunteers in the selected community or in
the form of a gift – is welcomed.
“I went to Fisher College!” exclaimed
Pamela (Nichols) Locklear ’76, who
spotted our students wearing their Fisher
baseball hats and shirts while working beside
Navy volunteers during their Alternative
Spring Break. As the wife of Vice Admiral
Sam Locklear, Director of Navy Staff, Pam
has lived in 24 different places in 31 years,
including California, Hawaii, New Jersey, Florida, and Washington.
She currently lives in Washington, D.C., and is the mother of
two “grown” daughters, one of whom followed in her mother’s footsteps
and married a Navy man, and the other of whom is a school
teacher and married the head basketball coach. Pam reminisced
fondly about her time at Fisher: “We used to slide down the rail [in
118 Beacon Street],” she chuckled. She served as a tour guide for
the admissions office. Pam recounted asking then-President Dr.
Scott A. Fisher ’51 if she could start a cheerleading team. Fisher
did not have athletics for women at the time, but Dr. Fisher suggested
that Pam try out for the New England Patriots cheerleading
squad. She did, and was on the squad for four years.
Fisher College has a reputation for being an all-women’s, secretarial school. Not so fast.
Men have always been a part of this school’s history, starting before the GI Bill paved the
way for many men coming out of the war to attend college. Fisher College has always moved
with the times, while staying true to its mission of changing lives by positioning students in
their quest for the knowledge and skills that will guide them through a lifetime of
intellectual and professional pursuits. Who are these Fisher men and women? Find out.
Angela Reed ‘09
Director of Admissions,
Shenzhen American
International School,
Shenzen, China
From
Homesick Student to World Traveler
I live in Shenzhen, China, a very modern and populated
city of 14 million people, and serve as Director of
Admissions at the Shenzhen American International School.
Shenzhen is directly north of Hong Kong and has an
extreme sub-tropical climate. I represent the School through
recruiting and marketing and supervise four staff. There is
no such thing as a “typical day” for me, as I meet with
parents, attend conferences, and promote the School at
various events.
When I arrived at Fisher, I thought college would be stressful,
especially living far away from my friends and family in
Dearborn, MI. Though far from home, I soon felt at ease.
I made several friends and even worked for the College
part-time. Three words that best describe my time at Fisher are
interesting, colorful, and priceless.
Something I learned at Fisher that most helps me in my work is
treating all people equally. Working in a global city brings
many challenges, but no matter where one comes from in life,
no matter how different we think we are, most people want to
be happy and treated with respect.
Another lesson was to never stop learning. I will continue my
education by obtaining my M.B.A. Professor Karen Myers
’68 had a huge impact in my life (and even nicknamed
me “Angela the Angel”) and encouraged me to do whatever
I wanted.
My first love was fashion, which sparked my interest in travel.
I thought there was no better way to see the world. I was on
a path to doing just that, but Heather Carpenter, the Director of
Career Services, approached me with this opportunity in China
and I arrived on June 1, 2009. I am forever grateful for my
time at Fisher, which took me halfway around the world.
I am still dreaming, forever a student, and always optimistic.
Devin Woolridge ‘06 has always tried to dance like no one’s
watching. Not for long. Devin served as a choreographer for
Dance Central, a new video game developed by Harmonix
(the developers of the hugely popular line of Rock Band
games), which is designed exclusively for Xbox 360 and is
scheduled for nationwide release on November 4, 2010.
When he learned about the call for choreographers, Devin
jumped at the opportunity. The process took several weeks as
he showcased his choreography for several different genres.
He readily admits he was surprised when he was one of five
choreographers hired for the project. "I was really happy to be
selected," Devin said. "I didn't expect to get picked – a lot of
very good choreographers auditioned. "
What makes Dance Central so innovative is that it is the first
dance video game that doesn’t have a mat or controller. "It
was a challenge because instead of choreographing routines
to fill an entire stage, I had to come up with moves you can do
in your living room," Devin said.
Harmonix Music is a game development company based in
Cambridge, MA. Known worldwide for its addictive music
games and groundbreaking design, Harmonix was founded
with a simple mission: to make the thrills of music-making
accessible to non-musicians. The games have appealed
equally to rock-crazed kids and their parents as well as to new
and seasoned musicians alike. Dance Central is their first
non-rock game.
Dance Like No One’s Watching
“I started dancing at five years old. I would watch Breakin’
and Michael Jackson videos and imitate the moves. After
high school I really wanted to take dance more seriously so I
learned different styles like break dancing, popping, hip-hop
and tap. Even though I went to Fisher to study Fashion
Merchandising, I stayed in the dance scene because that’s
what I enjoy the most.”
Devin is currently employed as the Assistant Director of
School-Age Child Care for the YMCA's Greater Lynn
(Massachusetts) branch, where he used to hang out and play
basketball as a kid. He loves working with kids and wants to
open his own dance studio in Lynn in the future.
In an industry known for high turnover and punishing hours,
the six years Chef Michael Dunton ‘03 has worked for
Marriott Corporation is a lifetime. Michael discovered the
culinary arts at a young age, as a busboy for a small,
family-owned restaurant in Billerica, MA. While at Fisher,
Michael played baseball even as he cooked around town.
Chef Dunton has created fun and familiar menu items for
J Porter’s Restaurant at the Fairfield County hotel using
techniques and presentations not often seen in a hotel
restaurant setting. Chef Dunton took off his toque to
answer a few questions about his life as a chef.
What was it like to take first place at the Sun WineFest ’10
(the largest wine and food festival in Connecticut)? It was a
great honor. It was nerve-racking to cook for the “who’s who”
in the culinary field. It was great to just get there, but to win
was thrilling.
What are your food inspirations? My inspirations are simple.
I prefer fresh, local, chef-crafted food. People are generally
more knowledgeable when it comes to food, thanks to the
popularity of television chefs. People want familiar food, and
to be able to find a twist on these comforts – to make it new
and exciting – is an inspiration as well.
What is your favorite dish on the menu at J Porter’s? Without
question, it’s the olive oil poached Chilean sea bass with
heirloom beans, baby local vegetables, and tomato fennel
broth.
What advice would you give to someone just coming into
the culinary and hospitality industry? Pay attention and pay
your dues. It is tough to come out of school and be at the top
right away, especially in this industry, where trends change
daily. Also, I would tell graduates that if they don’t absolutely
love it, then find a new career. The hours and erratic schedule
can deter a lot of people. If you’re like me, and like that the
scenery always changes and there is always something new
going on, then this is a great field.
What’s your favorite kitchen gadget? My favorite kitchen
gadget is a wood smoker. I do a lot of smoking and it is a
science in itself. The other day we made a smoked vodka and
bacon dirty martini. It was incredible!
What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you in the
kitchen? A huge snow storm a couple years ago shut down
Route 95 and the Mass Pike. People – hundreds! – left their
cars on the highway and came to the hotel to eat. We
basically ran out of everything on the menu.
Ten years from now, what would you like to be doing? My
goal will not be complete until I am Corporate Executive Chef
for all of Marriott International. I don’t see that happening in
ten years but I hope to be well on my way.
Maxine Bennett ‘08
Health Information
Management
Coordinator,
New England
Sinai Hospital
Accolades Aplenty for an Alumna
She doesn’t do it for the recognition, but Maxine
Bennett ’08 has added another award to her impressive
resume. Maxine received the 2010 Massachusetts
Health Information Management Association’s
(HIMA) Outstanding New Professional Award at
the New England Annual HIMA Conference in
M a n c h e s t e r, N H . T h e Aw a r d r e c o g n i z e s a
professional who demonstrates potential for future
leadership, innovation, and creativity.
“I was introduced to HIM in 1989. My family immigrated from
Jamaica and I landed my first job as a Medical Records Clerk
at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. During my nine
year tenure, I was promoted from Correspondence Clerk to
Correspondence Coordinator to Assistant to the Director of the
HIM Department.”
As a Fisher student, Maxine completed her directed practice at
New England Sinai Hospital. In addition to juggling college
and work, she also did a stint as a single parent while her
husband was stationed in Iraq for 14 months. Maxine said,
“It was a challenge. The love and support of my family, friends,
and co-workers helped me stay balanced and achieve my
aspirations.” Despite the difficulties, Maxine graduated in
2008 and earned the Student Achievement Award. Maxine’s
husband, Army Staff Sgt. Crosby A. Bennett, received
the 2010 YMCA Black Achievers Award from the YMCA
of Greater Boston. Congratulations – the Bennett’s are an
award-winning family!
Early on, Maxine showed herself to be a winner, but she is
quick to note she did not do it alone. “I have been fortunate to
have had the ‘best of the best’ mentors. After being away
from school for many years, Fisher’s professors gave me the
assurance that I can do it. They are still there for me. I give so
much credit to my husband, who is a constant source of
support and he encourages me to continue my education and
learning online was invaluable.”
2005
As a Residential Support Specialist at Behavioral
John Souza was one of my best teachers and
I will never forget him.”
Shanna Gall ’06 is a couture designer, SG
Fashions.com. “My job is challenging – and
thrilling. My day-to-day might find me sewing,
reviewing orders, planning boutiques, networking,
creating promotions, executing marketing
strategies, meeting with media and corporate
executives, corresponding with firms in LA and
New York, and, of course, being creative. It’s
very busy, but unbelievably fulfilling. Thanks to
Mrs. Howe, I now know what advice to offer
aspiring designers: believe in yourself, stay
determined, surround yourself with positive
influences, and know that the heart never lies.”
2007
“I always had the best crew!” said Leda Lopes
’07, who is a soldier and earning her M.B.A.
while deployed in Afghanistan. “My best Fisher
memory is when we had to build our own business
from scratch – and make three years of
profit. My project was The Cream of the Crop
restaurant in Newport, RI. I miss one of the best
professors, Mr. John Souza, may he rest in peace.”
Tineaka Lollar ‘07 was recently offered a
GS12 Program Manager Position at Hanscom
(MA) Air Force Base. In a letter to Neil Trotta,
Director of Division of Continuing Education
Operations, Tineaka wrote, “I am elated [and]
wanted to let you know that your prayers, your
support, and your confidence in me has been
truly wonderful. Thank you for being what you
are for me in my life…I appreciate all of you.”
2008
Stephanie Bravoco ’08 told us of her whereabouts:
“I currently work as an executive assistant
for Siemens Healthcare's Occupational
Health Department. The associate’s degree
[Paralegal Studies] really paid off, as I use my
legal skills everyday maintaining our contracts,
OSHA records, and workers comp cases. We
also have a full time health clinic on site which
offers BP checks, phlebotomy, first-aid and
wellness screenings. I am also a certified
American Heart Association CPR/AED and First
Aid Instructor. Amazing... thank God for Fisher!”
e E.H. & M.C. Fisher Legacy Society
You can a the futu of Fisher.
Just like they did.
The E.H. & M.C. Fisher Legacy Society was created in 2009 as a way
to recognize alumni and friends who support Fisher through a planned
gift. Members receive a welcome gift and certificate upon joining,
recognition in the annual Honor Roll, and an invitation to an annual event
with the President. Of greater importance, however, is the knowledge
that these gifts assist us in imagining the Fisher of tomorrow – today.
For more information about making
a legacy gift, call Richard Levitt,
Vice President for Institutional Advancement,
at 617-670-4418,
