<strong>Exploration</strong> <strong>of</strong> Worms<br />
When children explore <strong>worms</strong>, they have the potential to:<br />
• Develop their curiosity on living creatures around them<br />
• Obtain cognitive knowledge about the nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>worms</strong>, and different<br />
types <strong>of</strong> surfaces (soil/sand)<br />
• Enhance physical movement by digging for <strong>worms</strong><br />
• Gain the sense <strong>of</strong> freedom to explore nature and the feeling <strong>of</strong> comfort<br />
• Increase the amount <strong>of</strong> social interaction with adults and other children<br />
• Develop a sense <strong>of</strong> wonder and feelings <strong>of</strong> connecting with nature<br />
Our First Story about the <strong>Exploration</strong> <strong>of</strong> Worms<br />
Tuesday August 27 th , 2013<br />
Bora: What are you guys doing?<br />
Cohen: We found a worm!<br />
Nigel: (looking at Bora) Can you carry the worm?<br />
Bora: I think you guys can carry it. If you feel like you can’t<br />
carry it with your hands, you can find something else to carry it.<br />
Nigel: (Trying to put a worm on the leaf but it did not work well)<br />
Cohen: (Using a rock to carry the worm)<br />
Khumalo: I have a good idea. I can use a stick!<br />
Bora: It seems like you are having a hard time putting the worm<br />
on the stick by just using a stick, Khumalo. Would it be helpful if<br />
you use your other hand to move the worm on the stick?<br />
Then, Khumalo put the worm on the stick and he stood up and<br />
left that spot with the rest <strong>of</strong> the children. Now their interests<br />
were on finding a good place for them to leave the worm.<br />
Cohen: Worms like to climb trees.<br />
Nigel: (Holding a red bucket) Put the worm in here.<br />
Bora: Do you think the worm likes to be under the sun?<br />
Khumalo: Worms like to be under the shade!<br />
Then, Khumalo grabbed the bucket and moved the worm.<br />
While looking for shade, we found a puddle.<br />
Cohen: Bora, can <strong>worms</strong> swim?<br />
Bora: How can we find out?<br />
Then, Cohen took the worm from the bucket and put it in<br />
the puddle. They were silent for a while because<br />
every<strong>one</strong> was staring the worm to see if the worm was<br />
able to swim.<br />
Bora: Guys, what do you think is going on with the worm?<br />
Cohen: It is wiggling.<br />
Jax: No! It is trying to get out <strong>of</strong> the puddle.<br />
