Old People’s Day is held as
part of the Chinese traditional
festival Chongyang. The festival
is always held on the 9th day of
the 9th Lunar month, and usually
falls in October of the Gregorian
calendar.
The name of the festival can
be translated into English as
“Double-Nine Festival”. The numbers
six and nine are associated
with the famous Yin and Yang
symbol, which resembles the
two numbers side-by-side.
Within the Yin and Yang symbol,
Yang is the bright, masculine
side, representing power. Nine
has therefore come to be
regarded as a powerful number
in Chinese numerology. In addition,
when pronouncing the word
“nine” in Mandarin it sounds like
the phrase “long-lasting”.
