Landscapes of the Somme - Paintings by contemporary artist Robert Perry
As part of the national
commemorations of the First World
War, Guildford House Gallery hosts
Landscapes of the Somme,
featuring drawings and paintings
of the Somme Battlefields by
an internationally known British
landscape painter.
Although primarily a traditional landscape
painter working exclusively on site with his
unique mobile “Field Studio” in locations
all over Europe from the Isle of Man to the
Alps, Robert Perry is particularly well known
for his drawings and paintings of the 1914-
18 Battlefields of The Western Front. For
more than 20 years he has been visiting
Flanders, The Somme and Verdun, studying
and making visual records of the killing
fields, trenches and labyrinthine tunnel
systems as they are now.
In recognition of his dedication he was
made an Honorary Citizen of the town of
Albert (epicentre of the Battle of the Somme
in which three of his great-uncles were killed
in 1916), and invited to exhibit his work at le
Centre Mondial de la Paix (the World Centre
for Peace) at Verdun and at the Council of
Europe in Strasbourg.
His expeditions have been documented
extensively by British and French Television
and his paintings have formed major solo
exhibitions at the Durham Light Infantry
Museum and Art Gallery and many City Art
Galleries including Birmingham, Blackburn,
Stockton-on-Tees, The Volksbank Halle,
Rheinland Pfalz, and L’ Espace Culturel d’
Albert (Somme).
Postal Museum’s
touring exhibition
Pop it in the Post: The World at the
and sometimes quirky ideas that made
the mail accessible to all.
Children and adults alike can discover the story
of the letter writing revolution, enabled by the
introduction of the world’s first stamp, the Penny
Black, in 1840, and the UK’s first pillar boxes in
1852. Learning about the individuals who made
this possible, visitors will discover how millions of
people’s lives were changed as a result of their
innovative problem solving.
Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in
Wonderland in 1865, there have been
an endless adaptations and re-imaginings
of the world’s most celebrated dreamchild
Alice has been appropriated for every purpose
Accessibility
Guildford Borough Council welcomes deaf and disabled
visitors to its heritage sites. The Council also aims to
ensure best possible access to the collection and
services. Where this is not possible (due to constraints
of the historic buildings or environment) a reasonable
alternative will be provided.
Access to Guildford Borough Council’s sites is up or
down steps and there are currently only stairs within
the historic buildings. Please contact us in advance
so we can assist you as much as possible to prepare
for your visit or provide an alternative option.
An induction loop is provided at reception and
shop desks.
Please contact us to request this brochure in
large print or an alternative format.
