Alice in Wonderland - Themes and Variations<br />

Since the first appearance of Lewis<br />

Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in<br />

Wonderland in 1865, there have been<br />

an endless adaptations and re-imaginings<br />

of the world’s most celebrated dreamchild<br />

and her wonderful adventures.<br />

In this series of small changing displays we explore<br />

how Alice, and the Wonderland she visited,<br />

have been illustrated across the years and around<br />

the world; how the book has been adapted on<br />

stage and on screen; how artists and writers have<br />

been inspired by Carroll’s creations and how<br />

Alice has been appropriated for every purpose<br />

you can imagine from advertising to pop music.<br />

The series begins with “Alice through the ages”<br />

which explores how Alice’s appearance has been<br />

frequently updated over the past 150 years<br />

and “Alice around the world” which looks at<br />

distinctive Alice illustrations from across the<br />

continents.<br />
