Alice in Wonderland - Themes and Variations
Since the first appearance of Lewis
Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in
Wonderland in 1865, there have been
an endless adaptations and re-imaginings
of the world’s most celebrated dreamchild
and her wonderful adventures.
In this series of small changing displays we explore
how Alice, and the Wonderland she visited,
have been illustrated across the years and around
the world; how the book has been adapted on
stage and on screen; how artists and writers have
been inspired by Carroll’s creations and how
Alice has been appropriated for every purpose
you can imagine from advertising to pop music.
The series begins with “Alice through the ages”
which explores how Alice’s appearance has been
frequently updated over the past 150 years
and “Alice around the world” which looks at
distinctive Alice illustrations from across the
continents.
