CROWN HILLS
SPORTS NEWS
Before we describe the Autumn sporting activities, here’s a roundup of the
fixtures and results at the end of the Summer term.
Summer 2016
Girls Cricket
Our U13 and U15 girls’ teams travelled to Sileby Cricket Club for the County
Outdoor Cricket Finals. There were some great performances from both teams
on a very hot day which ended with the U15 team going to the regional finals.
This came as a nice surprise to our team, as we thought we had achieved
second place but after a better run rate comparison we were awarded the
County Championship trophy and were on our way to the regionals. The U13s
came third but as this team started from scratch, third place is very commendable.
The U15 girls competed in the regional final at Moseley Cricket Club coming in
at fifth place. They had a great day on the last day of term and played against
some fantastic schools. The girls played extremely well and they will be
training throughout the winter to return next year.
Boys Cricket
A busy summer of cricket saw Crown Hills with four teams in action over the
summer term. The highlight of the season came from our U14 and U15 boys’
teams. The boys have never reached a County Cup Final and in one year we
achieved huge success in reaching two finals. Unfortunately, both sides came
up short, losing against Leicester Grammar School and Loughborough
Grammar School respectively. However, this is a sign that the standard of
cricket at Crown Hills is consistently improving.
LCFC Junior Football Leaders qualification
Year 10 GCSE PE students have earned this qualification which is the first step
on the coaching ladder. They achieved this by completing a minimum of 10
voluntary hours of leadership during which they learnt all of the important
aspects of successful sports leadership. All students supported and led football
sessions for Year 7 students, under the supervision of the Leicester City
coaching staff. Uzair Limbada demonstrated an excellent attitude in particular,
and was used by the club as a case study for the Premier League. The students
received their qualification in assembly which will look fantastic on their CVs.
LCFC PSHE lessons to Year 8 students
Within Year 8 PE lessons, Leicester City have been working with students on a
PSHE project. This involves learning about personal, social and health
education. In particular, it covered healthy eating, racism within football,
benefits of exercise, the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol, as well as healthy
relationships.
Autumn Term 2016
National School Games 2016
The National School Games finals were held at Loughborough University,
which saw the best schools in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland
battle it out in various sports for the National Championships. A group of
students was specifically selected to attend this event. This included students
participating as part of a media team, taking up officiating and volunteering
roles, as well as a few students spectating. Loughborough University will be
hosting the next two National School Games. Crown Hills will be looking
forward to getting involved and offering their continued support to an
excellent event which offers an opportunity to watch top class performers.
Who knows one day it could be our students!
Football
Football is blooming for our Year 7 boys with over 50 boys attending Thursday
lunchtime football practice. These are fantastic numbers, making it very
difficult for Mr Keast to select a team to represent Crown Hills. The team has
played numerous matches giving lots of boys the opportunity to represent the
school. Keep up the excellent attitude!
Our Year 8 boys’ team has also been in action this season playing three games.
Unfortunately they lost these games which were highly competitive. They have
three games left, with a chance to turn their fortunes around and get some
points on the board.
The Year 11 boys had a mixed start to the season. Our Year 11 team has only
played two games so far. They won their first game against Babington College,
3-1 but were defeated by Judgemeadow, 6-0. They still have two more fixtures
to play.
Girls’ football is on the way with some friendly competitions coming up; we are
preparing for competitive matches in the New Year. Crown Hills is looking
forward to putting together a Year 7 and Year 10/11 team.
Basketball – Girls
Girls’ basketball has developed well at Crown Hills. This year we have three
girls’ teams. Our Year 10/11 team has played two games, beating St Pauls
15-12, but losing to Rushey Mead 8-12. They are currently second in the
league. The Year 8 Girls’ team has also played two matches and lost both
games to Judgemeadow, 2-6 and Rushey Mead, 6-12. Our Year 7 team has also
played just two games. They beat Rushey Mead, 10-2 but lost to Moat, 2-4.
Netball
Girls’ netball makes a return to Crown Hills! We have successfully put together
a keen Year 7 team which has started with great enthusiasm. They have had
two fixtures, playing 4 games on each night. Their first fixture saw them
winning 3 games, defeating Tudor Grange, Sir Jonathan North and a walkover
against City of Leicester, and losing to New College. In the second night of
fixtures, they won three games, again beating Tudor Grange, Soar Valley and
Sir Jonathan North but losing to New College. Amber Adam is currently the top
goal scorer and Inderbir Kaur has been outstanding as a goal keeper.
Table Tennis
A big interest for the Year 7/8 table tennis team allowed Crown Hills to enter
two teams for the East Leicester Level 2 Competition at Judgemeadow. Crown
Hills A finished third, winning 3 and losing 2 matches. They beat Rushey Mead,
Judgemeadow B and Crown Hills B. Our B team unfortunately lost all 5 of their
games but students were commended for their sportsmanship,as they were
awarded the Spirit of the Games Award.
We were also able to enter two teams for the Year 9/10/11 East Leicester Table
Tennis competition. Crown Hills A finished third, winning 4 of 6 matches
beating teams such as Moat, Rushey Mead, Judgemeadow B and Crown Hills
B. Crown Hills B won 1 of 6 matches, beating Judgemeadow B, 4-0.
We also took two girls’ teams to the East Leicester competition. It was brilliant
to witness such enthusiasm for this competition. The Year 7 team was victorious
and has progressed to the Level 3 finals.
Cross Country
Cross country has returned on Saturdays. The new season has seen interest
from a variety of students, including our new Year 7s which is encouraging.
Two races have been completed so far and most of our runners have not done
a cross country race before. Special mention to Maya Richards, who finished a
very commendable twelfth in the second race.
Sports Hall Athletics
Huge congratulations to our Year 10 boys’ team! They took the Gold after
beating athletics giants St Pauls by one point. We came first in the 2 lap relay
and speed bounce, and joint second in the shot put. The Year 9 boys’ team
came third overall but had Gold success in the shot and Silver success in the
4x2 lap relay and vertical jump. The Year 10 girls’ team finished third overall
but achieved individual Golds for shot put after narrowly defeating a strong St
Pauls competitor.
The Year 7 and 8 Athletics teams also battled it out with the East Leicester
schools in the indoor track and field games. The Year 8 boys’ team finished
second, with a Gold in the shot put. The year 7 girls’ team also finished second.
School Games Mark Gold reaccredited and message from PE
Every year, we see fantastic numbers attending our ample and
diverse extra-curricular programme and it is very encouraging to
see a large number of students representing Crown Hills against other schools.
This was key to our School Games Mark reaccreditation which took place in
September. We were externally audited and the feedback we received was
outstanding in relation to the opportunities we offer to our pupils. Keep up the
good work and stay involved all year round! Our extra-curricular timetable is
displayed on our PE boards and in each of the changing rooms. All of our
upcoming fixtures can be found on the school website. The fixtures can also be
found at http://www.teamleicestershire.org/sspans/east-leicester along with
results and league tables.
We must offer a special mention to our staff and students’ hard work, commitment
and dedication. Without this, Crown Hills would not be as successful as it
is. We urge students and parents to commit to practices and fixtures so that
we can keep up the success. This will help eliminate the issue of chasing
students to check if they can play. It is a vital learning experience that students
understand commitment when they belong to a team. One person’s lack of
commitment can cause huge disruption to the whole team. If you have made
a commitment, it is imperative that you do everything you can to keep it. If you
are unable to attend fixtures, it is YOUR responsibility to inform the member of
staff involved. Do not ask a friend to tell staff and, more importantly, do not
avoid speaking to staff. The amount of preparation that is involved with
fixtures, especially away fixtures, is very time consuming, and we cannot afford
to have students bailing out at the last minute. A huge thank you to those
students who do attend regularly and fulfil fixtures. Keep up the good work!
Congratulations to all those who have competed so far and good luck to those
who are set to compete in the new term.
