The Confucius Institute 

Accomplishments 2007 - 2016 

The Confucius Institute’s (CI) mission is to enhance intercultural understanding in the U.S. 

by supporting and organizing Chinese language and culture programs. NC State’s CI accomplishes 

this mission through a range of educational and outreach activities for students, teachers, businesses, 

and community members. The NC State CI helps to contribute to the support of Chinese language instruction 

at NC State and in North Carolina K-16 schools, offers enriching cultural opportunities for the community 

and helps organizations and businesses improve their international knowledge. 

NC State's CI opened in 2007 and partners with Nanjing Normal University.

Dr. Ding served as the Chinese 

Director from 2011- 2016. As this 

was the longest term served by a 

Chinese Director, Dr. Ding was able 

to develop many new initiatives, 

open two Confucius Classrooms and 

create many sustainable programs.

Led the 2012 Study Abroad Program to Nanjing Normal University, worked with Superintendents across 

the State of North Carolina, spoke at International and National Conferences, led the University of North 

Carolina Board of Governors to China in 2012 and hosted an international conference “China & the World, 

Diversity of Civilization and Cross-Cultural Communication” where over 200 scholars from around the 

world came to Raleigh in 2013. She connected NC State and NNU and helped to facilitate departmental 

connections and MOUS (Financial Math, College of Education, and Technical Writing Program). She also 

developed a strong team among our CI professors, created planning teams with teachers from Confucius 

Classrooms, developed program manuals and helped increase our programs.

莫莉老师 2013 年 9 月开始在北卡州大孔子学院工作 , 

并成为孔院的中坚力量。莫老师改进了汉语课程大纲 , 

使其更加符合学生的需要。她承担了北卡州立大学外 

语系的中文实践课程的教学工作 , 学生数量达 200 多 

人。2015 年她作为海外学习中文项目的主管 , 带领 17 

位学生 , 在南京师范大学参加暑期中文项目。她在北卡 

外语协会上作报告 , 为当地培训了 200 多位中文教师。 

Mo Li worked at our CI from 2013- 

2016. During her time at NC State she 

was a strong addition to our CI office. 

Professor Mo grew our Chinese language 

curriculum as she re-organized our 

Chinese classes to better fit student’s 

needs. She worked with the NC State 

Foreign Language Department to teach 

the Chinese Conversation class, teaching 

over 200 NC State students. She was the 

Program Director for the 2015 Study 

Abroad Program to Nanjing Normal 

University, where she lead 17 students 

to China. In 2014, Professor Mo received 

a Chinese Teaching Award from Hanban, 

our CI headquarters. She presented 

Chinese teaching methodology 

presentations at the Foreign Language 

Association of North Carolina (FLANC) 

and taught over 200 local Chinese 

teachers at different workshops in NC.

She taught Chinese language and 

culture, performed Chinese fandancing, 

demonstrated her Chinese 

calligraphy, paper-cutting and knotmaking 

talents across NC at many 

different events. Professor Mo is an 

excellent Chinese teacher, receiving 

high- praise from her students and is 

extremely dedicated, hard-working and 

professional in all the tasks assigned 

to her. She was a great liaison between 

the Chinese Department at Nanjing 

Normal University and NC State and she 

contributed greatly to the growth of our 

CI programs. She received the Fall 2015 

CI Star Employee Award. 

她还教授中国文化课程 , 在孔院的各项文 

化活动中表演中国传统扇子舞、展示书 

法、剪纸和中国结等。莫老师是一位优秀 

的汉语教师 , 得到学生的高度认可。她在 

孔院的各项工作中非常勤勉投入 , 表现出

范大学中文项目的合作中发挥了很好的纽 

带作用 , 为孔子学院的发展做出了巨大贡

Ye Danmin 叶丹敏 

南京师范大学的叶丹敏老师在孔院工作的时间是 

2015 年 8 月至 2016 年 8 月。她承担的工作包括 : 初 

级汉语课、汉语水平考试和汉办奖学金项目、部分 

校园和社区文化活动。她在孔院工作期间与当地汉 

语教师合作拓展了汉语考试项目 , 考生人数有 100 

多名。

Professor Ye Damin from Nanjing Normal University 

was at our CI from Fall 2015- Fall 2016. During her time 

she taught our Beginning Chinese Language Classes 

for the community, managed our Chinese Proficiency 

Tests (HSK and YCT), CI Scholarship program and 

helped with Chinese cultural events at NC State 

and the community. She helped grow our Chinese 

Proficiency Test to over 100 participants and worked 

with local Chinese teachers to expand the program to 

their students.

Dr. Yang Mei is a visiting professor 

from Beijing Sport University Sports 

and Arts Department. Yang started 

studying dance at the age of five 

and has over 10 years of professional 

training in Rhythmic Gymnastics 

and Sports Acrobatics. In 1995, she 

received the certification of China’s 

“First-Class Athlete”. Yang won second 

prize in Sichuan University’s Student 

Festival of Arts in 1996 and received 

her Doctor’s Degree of Education in 

2009. She was once an international 

judge for Rhythmic Gymnastics and 

a member of the Beijing Colleges 

Yoga Association. Dr. Yang has much 

experience in both sports training 

and arts teaching, including Chinese 

Classical Dance, Chinese Folk Dance, 

Group dance, Body Shape Training, 

Yoga and Tai Chi. She managed and 

organized Rhythmic Gymnastics events 

at the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, 26th 

Summer Universiade, 16th Asian Games 

and the 2014 Youth Olympic Games. 

She is currently a visiting professor at 

the Confucius Institute at North Carolina 

State University teaching Chinese 

Dance and Taichi to students and the 

community. She is interested in learning 

about US and Chinese dance forms and 

learning about new ways to connect arts 

and sports.

Yang Mei 杨梅 

杨梅来自北京体育大学体育艺术系。她自幼学习舞蹈 , 并连续 10 多年从事艺术体操专项 

训练。1995 年 , 她获得国家一级运动员称号。1996 年 , 荣获四川省首届大学生文化艺术 

节二等奖。她曾经是艺术体操国际四级裁判 , 同时还是北京高校瑜伽协会会员。 

杨梅博士在体育运动训练和艺术教学方面都有丰富的经验 , 比如中国古典舞、中国民族 

民间舞、集体舞、形体训练、瑜伽和太极。她也曾供职于国际大型赛事并担任项目技术 

官员主管 —— 第 29 届奥林匹克运动会、第 26 届世界大学生运动会、第 16 届亚洲运动会和 

2014 年青少年奥林匹克运动会。

马妍东北财经大学国际商务外语 

学院副教授 , 北卡州大访问学者。 

她曾于 2013 年作为访问学者在北卡 

州梅瑞迪斯学院教授汉语和中国文 

化 , 并由此对跨文化交际和汉语及 

中国文化的国际推广产生了浓厚的 

兴趣。她目前就职于北卡州立大学 

孔子学院 , 承担汉语教学工作并 

负责 HSK 考试和孔院 / 汉 

办奖学金项目。 

Ma Yan is a visiting professor from 

the School of International Business 

Communications at Dongbei University 

of Finance and Economics. She was a 

visiting scholar at Meredith College in 

the spring semester of 2013, where she 

taught Chinese language and culture 

and became interested in further 

development of sharing cross-cultural 

communications. At our CI she is 

responsible for the Chinese Proficiency 

Tests (HSK and YCT) and CI/Hanban 

Scholarship program.

Dr. Yu Yanling is a visiting professor 

from Wuhan University of Technology 

majoring in Theory and Practice in 

Translation, TESOL and Educational 

Management. Dr. Yu previously taught 

courses for MTI program and Chinese 

language courses for international 

students. At our CI she and is 

responsible for the North Carolina 

Chinese Language Contest in 2017 

as well as teaching SKEMA Business 

Classes. 

于艳玲 , 博士 , 武汉理工大学 

外国语学院副教授 , 北卡州大访问 

学者。她的研究方向主要是翻译理 

论与实践、英语教学以及教育管理 

学。教学方面 , 曾经承担翻译专业 

硕士课程以及国际留学生的中文教 

学。她目前讲授北卡州大孔院汉语 

课程和 Skema 商学院的初级汉语课 

程 , 并负责 2017 年北卡中文大赛的 

相关工作。

Dr. Yang Mei arrived to our CI in February 2016. She brought with her Taichi and Chinese Folk 

Dance expertise. She opened Taichi classes at Exploris Middle School and at NC State. 

Dr. Yang performed Chinese Folk Dances 

at many local events: multiple Chinese 

New Year Events, Triangle Area Dragon 

Boat Festival, US-China Summit, NC 

State Diversity week and at local schools 

in NC. Yang Mei is very professional in 

her demonstrations of Chinese culture 

and spends a lot of time preparing her 

dance performance and curriculum, even 

her unique costumes and makeup that 

contribute to the full Chinese experience. 

Dr. Yang has a welcoming and friendly 

personality and is always open to go above 

and beyond and help others at our CI and 

in the community. She has adjusted well to 

her new tasks, created new programs and 

greatly represents our CI team. 

2016 年 2 月杨梅博士开始在北卡州大孔子 

学院工作。她以自己的专业特长为孔院带 

来太极和中国传统舞蹈的特色课程。杨梅 

博士在伊克斯普洛里斯初中和北卡州大开 

设太极课 , 在各类文化活动中表演中国舞

赛、中美峰会、北卡州大多元文化周以及 

多个当地学校的活动。杨梅博士以非常专 

业的形象诠释了中国文化的丰富与精彩 , 

舞台无论大小 , 她总是一丝不苟地演出 , 

对服装、妆容的考究甚至达到了苛刻的程 

度。她的课堂和演出均赢得观众的一致喝 

彩 ! 杨梅博士性格开朗 , 待人友好 , 随时 

愿意帮助同事和朋友 , 得到孔院团队和当 

地社区的交口称赞。她能迅速适应新的工 

作环境 , 开发新的项目 , 很好地展现了孔 

子学院的形象。

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Confucius Institute, and to welcome the Year of the Monkey, our CI had 11 C 

partnered with schools, organizations, and government departments to share about the Chinese New Year. We had o

Celebration 

The Year of the Monkey, marks the 10th Anniversary of our Confucius Institute. Our CI opened in 

April 2007 and was the first CI in the Southeast of the US. Since that time, over 629,000 people have 

attended our cultural programs, over 23,00 people have studied Chinese through our programs and 

over 230 students have studied in China. To celebrate this Anniversary, we hosted a Chinese New Year 

Event at the North Carolina Executive Mansion with over 130 guests. We had business, government and 

educational leaders present, our Confucius Classrooms, local government officials, and many of our 

community partners. We had a Chinese Folk Dance performance from our newest CI professor, Yang 

Mei, and Chinese traditional music performed by the RTP Chinese Music Ensemble. We had remarks 

from our US and Chinese Directors to share about the growth of our CI over the 10 year period. We 

also had remarks from Dr. T. Eston Marchant, President of Central Carolina Community College (one 

of our Confucius Classrooms), Melania Aguirre-Rabon, Department Head, Foreign Languages & Fine 

Arts, Wake Technical Community College (one of our Confucius Classrooms, Aaron Thomas, Saint 

Augustine’s University Student that studied abroad to China (one of our Confucius Classrooms) , and 

remarks from Helga Fasciano, Special Assistant for Global Education from the NC Department of Public 

Instruction. The contribution of CI in culture exchange between China and US was acclaimed by all the 

guests, and they all enjoyed Chinese culture. The first lady of North Carolina liked our decoration of the 

Chinese knot, and hung one her office. This event shared about our successful growth over 10 years and 

encouraged new partnerships to help us continue to grow in the future. We had a series of events in 

2016 to celebrate our Anniversary and this Chinese New Year Event was the first of such events.

猴年是北卡罗莱纳州立大学孔子学院成立十周年。2007 年 4 月 , 北卡罗 

莱纳州立大学孔子学院作为美国东南部第一所孔子学院成立了。从那时起至 

今 ,629,000 多名美国民众参加了孔院的文化活动 ,23,000 多名美国人通过孔 

院的课程学习汉语 , 还有 230 多名美国大学生通过孔院的海外留学项目到中国学 

习。这十年来 , 北卡罗莱纳州立大学孔子学院取得了令人瞩目的成绩。为了庆祝 

孔院成立十周年 , 我们在北卡州长官邸举办了新春招待会。当地商界、政界和教

区大学 ( 孔子课堂 ) 校长 T· 依斯顿 · 马彻特、威克技术社区大学 ( 孔子课堂 ) 外语 

与艺术系主任迈拉尼 · 阿吉雷 - 罗本以及来自北卡州公共教学委员会的全球教育部 

执行助理海尔格 · 范施亚诺分别作了发言。圣奥古斯汀大学 ( 孔子课堂 ) 学生亚 

伦 · 托马斯还以亲身体验介绍了孔院的中国留学项目。所有来宾都感叹北卡孔院 

为当地汉语文化传播所做的贡献 , 对中国的传统文化充满了兴趣。北卡第一夫人 

还表示她将把孔院赠送的中国节悬挂在她的办公室内 , 以纪念中美友谊。这次活 

动帮助我们分享了孔院十年的发展历程 , 同时鼓励新合作伙伴在未来协同孔院继 

续发展。孔院在 2016 年将举办一系列庆祝孔院成立十年的活动 , 新春招待会为 

这一系列活动拉开了序幕。

In 2016, CI (including our 4 Classrooms) offered 67 

different Chinese language classes (Beginning 

Chinese, Intermediate Chinese, Business Chinese 

and Conversation Classes). We offered 35 credit 

classes including 4 for-credit Conversation Classes 

for NC State students and 6 for-credit classes for 

SKEMA (a French Business School on campus). We 

had a total of 6,378 students study Chinese. 

北卡州大孔院在 2016 年共开设六十七门汉语课程 ( 初

In 2016, CI (including our 4 Classrooms) offered 67 

community outreach activities. We offer oncampus 

activities for students (Packapalooza were 

over 75,000 people attended, International Fairs, 

Campus Connections, Global Colors Shack-A-Thon, 

Taichi Workshops). We also offer community 

activities (Chinese organizations, business trainings, 

Emerging Issues Forum, presentations at schools 

across NC, Taichi Workshops). We had 118,292 

people attend our cultural events. With our new 

professor, Dr. Yang Mei, we were able to offer Taichi 

and Dance workshops that were widely attended. We 

offered 4 Taichi workshops, and taught 43 NC State 

Faculty and Staff and over 100 high school students. 

2016 年 , 北卡州大孔院共举办 67 项社区文化活动。在 

北卡州大 , 我们为学生举办的活动包括 :75,000 位学生 

参加的开学狂欢节、国际文化节、校园募捐周、太极研

On April 9th, The 7th Annual Chinese Language Contest was held in the Hunt Library on NC State’s 

Centennial Campus. This year the Contests welcomed a total of 497 participants from 27 schools/ 

organizations, 16 cities and 12 counties across NC. The participants ranged from elementary students 

to college students. The event was reported by The World Journal and China Press Media. Before the 

competition judges graded videos submitted by participants and 50 contestants entered the finals. The 

finalists competed in three sections (speech, Q&A, and talent shows). They choose different topics on 

school, friendship, and traveling experiences and impressed judges with their clear pronunciation and 

accurate vocabulary. In the talent show Gordan Griffin, a student from UNC Greensboro 

campus, recited a poem written by Mao Zedong, and received a warm applause from the audience. 

This year prizes were awarded to 27 students in the Finals.This was the 7th annual contest and 

welcomed over 3,000 participants in North Carolina to compete in the only statewide Chinese 

Language Speech and Writing Contest. The Chinese Language Contests promoted the Chinese 

language learning and communication in different schools across NC and we look forward to 

supporting this contest in future years and working with our wonderful school partners. 

4 月 9 日 , 第七届北卡中文演讲比赛在北卡州大 Hunt 图书馆报告厅成功举办。至此 , 由北卡州大孔子学 

院主办的本届写作暨演讲大赛圆满落下了帷幕。本届中文大赛吸引了全北卡 12 个郡 16 个城市 27 所学校 

共计 497 名选手参加。参赛者既有入学不久的小学生 , 也有在读的大学生。演讲决赛吸引了参赛选手亲 

友、师长及汉语爱好者们前来观看。当地重要媒体《侨报》、《世界日报》的记者也到现场观摩 , 对本 

次大赛进行报道。 

从 2 月中旬到 3 月中旬 , 为时一个月 , 评委们对演讲比赛初赛视频进行了严谨、认真的评审 , 最后共计 

50 名选手进入了决赛。决赛分为三个环节 : 命题演讲、现场答问及才艺表演。选手们在这三个方面展 

开了激烈角逐。在主题演讲环节 , 选手们紧扣主题 , 或是介绍自己深深喜爱的学校 ; 或是讲述好朋友之 

间的深情厚谊 ; 或是描述一段难忘的旅行经历。选手们清晰的发音、精当的用词、流畅的语言给评委老 

师们留下了深刻的印象。在即兴问答环节 , 选手们或机智、或可爱、或直率的回答赢得了一阵阵的掌声 

和笑声。才艺表演环节中 , 选手们更是八仙过海各显神通 , 快板朗诵大展身手、琴棋书画信手拈来。他 

们精彩的表演赢得了在场观众的阵阵掌声。来自北卡大学格林斯堡分校的大学生 Gordan Griffin 的词朗 

诵《沁园春 · 雪》字正腔圆、气势沉稳 , 更是赢得了现场观众的热烈掌声。经过激烈的角逐 , 共有 27 

位选手获得了本次比赛的各项大奖。 

自 2010 年以来 , 北卡州大孔院已经成功主办了 7 届中文写作暨演讲大赛。迄今为止 , 参加人数已超过两 

千人。中文大赛在推动汉语学习在北卡的发展上起到了举足轻重的作用 , 它也越来越成为选手们及各学 

校切磋中文、共同促进的友好交流平台。

Summer Study Abroad Program 

at Nanjing Normal University

Professor Zhou Wenhua led 9 students from NC State, Saint Augustine’s University, and 

University of North Carolina Wilmington to study abroad at Nanjing Normal University. 

The Summer Study Abroad Program lasted from May 17 to June 21, during which the 

students spent five weeks at NNU studying Chinese language and culture. They were 

arranged in different classes based on their Chinese level and studied with foreign students 

from other countries. On the weekends, they went to Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, 

and Hongcun to explore different aspects of Chinese culture. All of the students said that 

they benefited abundantly from this trip as they were able to get some first-hand experience 

in the rich history and civilization of China. They would be happy to recommend this 

program to their friends. 

2016 年 5 月 17 号 ——6 月 21 号 , 周文华老师带领来自北卡州大、圣奥古斯丁大学和北卡大学 

威尔明顿分校的 9 名学生赴中国进行为期 5 周的的汉语及中国文化的沉浸式学习。南京师范大 

学根据学生们分班考试的结果 , 安排他们进入最适合其汉语水平的班级 , 与其他国际学生一 

起学习汉语。每个周末他们还前往北京、上海、苏州、杭州及安徽宏村开展文化探访之旅。 

中国各地或壮丽或秀美的风景、中国悠久的历史与传统文明给每一位学员留下了深刻的印 

象。经过数周的沉浸式学习 , 学生的汉语水平取得了长足的进步 , 对中国历史和文化的了解 

也更加充分。许多学生都说他们会向朋友推荐这个海外汉语学习项目。

September 17 was this year’s Confucius Institute 

Day. We celebrated the special occasions with the 

third Dragon Boat Festival in the Triangle area, 

hosted by Asian Focus. Our CI has partnered with 

them each year as one of the main sponsors and 

to host a Chinese cultural booth. NC Secretary 

of State, Elaine Marshall, US Congressman David 

Price, Mr. Harold Weinbrecht Jr, Mayor of Cary, 

Morrisville Town Councillor Steve Rao, and Lenovo 

Executives attended the opening ceremony along 

with over 15,000 community members.A total of 26 

dragon boat racing teams from local communities 

and schools participated in this event including the 

NC State Office of International Affairs. There were 

over 60 cultural and food booths, and Chinese 

cultural performances for the entire day. Professor 

Yang Mei danced and gained big applauses from 

the audience. The CI set up a booth to share 

Chinese culture by providing Chinese costumes 

for people to try on, lanterns with Chinese idioms 

written on them, and teaching people how to 

trace Chinese calligraphy. Our booth stayed busy 

the entire day as people waited in long lines to 

experience Chinese culture. The CI was one of 

the most popular and attractive booths as we 

provided unique activities for participants. With the 

celebration of the annual Confucius Day combined 

with the Dragon Boat Festival, our CI was able to 

reach a large audience to share about Chinese 

language and culture to the local communities, 

enriching the concept of the annual Confucius Day 

with local community activities. 

美国当地时间 9 月 17 日 , 为庆祝年度孔子学院日暨北卡 

州大孔院成立十周年 , 北卡州大孔院和当地华人团体、 

商业组织共同协办北卡三角区第三届龙舟大赛。以宣传 

亚洲文化为核心的龙舟赛已经成为北卡三角区一年一度 

的重要活动 , 赢得了广泛关注。本届大赛在风景优美的 

可卡露天剧场和交响乐湖边举行 , 北卡州务卿依兰 · 马 

歇尔女士、国会议员大卫 · 普锐斯先生、凯瑞市市长哈罗 

德 · 温布瑞克特先生、莫里斯维尔市政府议员斯蒂文 · 饶 

先生以及联想总部的负责人员莅临现场 , 参加了龙舟点 

睛仪式并观看了比赛。当地 15000 多民众热情参与 , 各 

大新闻媒体也对本次盛况进行了热情洋溢的报道。 

本次龙舟大赛有来自华人商业组织、各个大学和龙舟爱 

好者俱乐部等共 26 支队伍参加 , 并有 60 余个文化美食 

展台 , 和中国文化表演。作为协办者之一 , 北卡州大孔 

院在中央场地搭设了一个孔院文化展台用以传播中华文 

化 , 杨梅老师表演了精彩的舞蹈 “ 飞天 ”, 均受到热烈 

欢迎。但见宣传台前 , 孔院教师们热情接待前来试穿中 

国民族服饰的当地民众 , 并为人们书写灯笼题字 , 提供 

书法临摹。孔院教师和志愿者们还向人们发放具有中国 

特色的小礼品 , 深受人们喜爱。美国民众为龙舟赛队加 

油助威之余 , 纷纷驻足在孔院宣传台边感受中华文化带 

来的美妙体验 , 他们有的全家簇拥在传统服饰架边挑选 

心仪的服装 , 在孔院教师帮助下穿戴整齐并拍照留念 ; 

有的排队等候书写灯笼和书法临摹。在诸多展台中 , 孔 

院宣传台从头至尾吸引了最多的民众。 

北卡州大孔院借助此次活动宣传了中华传统文化 , 让更 

多的美国民众了解了孔院的工作和作用 , 用行动诠释 

了 “ 孔院日 ” 的含义。

2016 年 , 北卡州大孔院共举办了四次 

HSK/HSKK 考试和四次 YCT 考试 , 共有 

140 人次参加 , 创下历年来参加考试人数 

之最。本年度汉语等级考试的整体特点 

是参加人数多 , 年龄层次大 , 涉及级别 

多。HSK/HSKK 考试为北卡地区的各层 

次学生申请奖学金提供了标准 , 同时 , 

由于越来越多来自美国各行各业的汉语 

学习者也积极参加到孔院举办的各类文 

化活动和汉语课程 , 各类考试也为北卡 

当地民众测试和提高汉语水平提供了便

Scholarship 

In January 2016, in order to support the development of 

CI scholarship programs, Hanban issued a new policy 

that scholarship recruitment is open all year, on a trial 

basis. This new change brought more convenience for 

students who would like to go to China and study in 

Chinese universities. 8 students applied for different 

categories of the scholarships and two of them have 

been granted CI scholarship this year.

Teacher Training Workshop 

Series for 

Local Chinese Teachers 

CI hosed two local Chinese teacher training workshops during the Fall 

Semester. Professor Zhou taught on the theories of Second Language 

Teaching and Teaching strategy. We trained over 50 local Chinese 

teachers. We also re-opened the Chinese Language Teaching 

Association of North Carolina and reorganized the leadership board to 

better meet the needs of the teachers. Dr. Zhou also presented at the 

Foreign Language Association of North Carolina (FLANC) Fall 

Conference. 

2016 年秋季学期 , 北卡州大孔院周文华老师主讲了两场本土汉语教师培训 , 受 

到当地汉语教师的欢迎。本学期的培训主要针对第二语言习得理论和教师教学

Diversity Education Week Events 

CI partnered with the Office of International Services and 

Diversity Week to offer two cross-cultural workshops. We 

offered a faculty and staff workshop on “How to help 

your Chinese students connect on campus?” As Chinese 

students are the second largest international population 

on campus there is a large demand from faculty and staff 

to better support these students. We had over 25 people 

attend the workshop and this is a pilot program to develop 

more programs for Spring 2017. We also offered a Chinese 

Dance Workshop for students.

当代中国文化 (17 日 ) 和传统中国舞蹈 (21 日 )。17 日的研讨会主题为 “ 如何帮助州大的中国学生

国学生 , 找到支持和帮助中国学生的办法。

卡州大孔院拟将此研讨会作为试点 , 在 2017 年春季进一步拓展与多元文化相关的活动。21 日的研讨 

会主题是 “ 传统中国舞蹈 ”, 共有 10 名学生参加本次活动 , 了解传统中国舞蹈的文化意蕴 , 并学习

Our Confucius Classroom at Enloe High School 

had two students honored at the first annual 

National Honors Gala hosted by the Confucius 

Institute U.S. Center in Washington, D.C. on 

September 24 at the Ronald Reagan Building 

and International Trade Center. Sabrina Tran is 

currently a rising senior. She has been studying 

Chinese for over 10 years and hopes to use her 

Chinese language skills in her future profession, 

as she intends to study Chemical or Biomedical 

Engineering in college. 

Deja Watkins, a recent graduate of Enloe, 

currently attends George Mason University 

and is double majoring in Global Affairs and 

Computational Data Science, with a minor 

in Chinese. She studied Chinese for 5 years. 

Our US and Chinese Director attended the 

event and this event was a successful time to 

honor and recognize CI’s contribution.

顿的罗纳德 · 里根大厦举行盛大典礼 , 表彰全美 10 名

2016 North Carolina Summit 

on 

U.S./China Education 

On Thursday, September 1,2016, the 5th Biennial Summit on US/ 

China Education, was held at the Friday Institute at NC State 

University. Since the NC State Board of Education and Jiangsu 

Provincial Department of Education signed an MOU in 2008, both 

NC and China have achieved prominent growth in maintaining an 

educational and cultural partnership to further Chinese-American 

cooperation and understanding. Over 27 speakers from local 

government, education and business, such as, Dr. June St. Clair 

Atkinson, State Superintendent of North Carolina Department 

of Public Instruction; William Cobey, Chairman of North Carolina 

State Board of Education; Bailian Li, Professor & Provost for 

International Affairs at NC State, shared remarks. More than 150 

participants gathered together and expressed their ideas on the 

theme of this summit--“NC & China: Connecting, Collaborating 

and Creating for the Future”based on 4 panels. During the 

opening ceremony, Hiller A. Spires,Professor & Research Fellow 

of NC State University gave a brief keynote introduction about 

the Summit and agenda. Dr. Bailian Li, Professor & Provost for 

International Affairs of NC State University reviewed the history 

of the Summit and highlighted the growth of the Confucius 

Institute. Anna Dunaway, Director of the CI at NC State, reported 

on the NC Chinese Language Contests and its growth to over 

1,900 participants since 2010. Dr. Yang Mei performed an elegant 

Chinese folk dance. Some other highlights at the Summit included 

a Chinese-English presentation by students at Waddell Language 

Academy (Immersion School in Charlotte area), and the worldpremiere 

video of the opening of Suzhou North American High 

School in partnership with the Friday Institute. Former Chair and 

current Chair of the NC State Board of Education concluded the 

Summit with a history of the MOU and called for us to continue to 

partner together to meet new challenges.

Business After Hours Event 

On October 12, the CI partnered with the 

Raleigh Chamber to host a Business After 

Hours networking event at the Hunt Library, 

with over 100 attendees from local businesses 

and NC State leaders present. 

The Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce 

is the Triangle’s largest business membership 

organization—made up of more than 2,500 

member firms representing two-thirds of the 

private sector employment in Wake County. 

We celebrated our CI’s 10th anniversary with 

a cake, slideshow of pictures highlighting our 

growth over the 10 years, welcome remarks by 

leaders and a scavenger hunt where members 

learned about our CI programs to win Chinese

SANFORD — A reception was held Monday, Oct. 24, to honor Yuehan Ma, the 

newest visiting instructor for Central Carolina Community College’s Confucius 

Classroom. The event was held at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center in 

Sanford. 

The Confucius Classroom is an educational partnership created with N.C. State 

University’s Confucius Institute and Nanjing Normal University. 

Ma is the fourth Confucius Classroom instructor at CCCC, as she succeeds 

Guan Wang (2012-2016), Ling Huang (2010-2012), and Shuya Che (2008- 

2010). The Confucius Classroom promotes an intercultural exchange grounded 

in Chinese language courses, but offering a wide range of cultural events and 

activities as well. 

“We are very excited to welcome Yuehan Ma to the College and eagerly 

anticipate her continuing the tradition of her predecessors in expanding our 

appreciation and learning of Chinese language and culture,” says Jon Matthews, 

CCCC’s Associate Provost in Harnett County and Confucius Classroom 

Director. 

Ma graduated from Xi’an International Studies University with a Master’s 

degree in 2007. She has served as a language and cross-culture instructor 

at Chang’an University since 2000. During her 16-year teaching career, Ma 

has taught a range of courses with a focus on cross-culture communication, 

American culture, and society studies, as well as language. 

The North Carolina-Research Triangle Park Chinese Music Instruments 

Ensemble provided music for the reception.

师 —— 马越晗 , 举办了一场欢迎会。招待会在 Dennis A. Wicker Civic 

Center 举行。 

这里的孔子课堂是北卡州立大学孔子学院和南京师范大学的教 

育伙伴。马越晗是来到社区大学的第四任汉语教师 , 她的前任有王冠 

(2012-2016), 黄琳 (2010-2012) 和车淑雅 (2008-2010)。孔子 

课堂除了在汉语课堂的基础上促进跨文化交流之外 , 更为这个地区提供 

了一系列广泛的文化活动。 

“ 对第四任老师的到来 , 我们非常高兴。期待她能继续前几任汉语 

教师的传统 , 扩展汉语语言文化学习在这个地区的影响和发展。” 中卡 

社区大学的教务长 Jon Matthews 如是说。 

马越晗老师于 2007 年毕业于西安外国语大学 , 取得英语语言文学 

硕士研究生学位。从 2000 开始在长安大学外国语学院任教 , 所教授的课 

程包括跨文化交际、美国社会与文化以及大学英语等。 

会场上 , 来自北卡三角区的中国乐队现场用琵琶、长笛和二胡等 

乐器 , 演奏了高山流水、彩云追月、梁祝 , 茉莉花等经典曲目 , 深受观 

众喜爱。 

孔子课堂的开放可为当地的社会、商业团体以及地方学校提供展 

示、交流和研习的舞台。欢迎社会各界参与到与课堂的交流和合作中。

April 30, 2016 

The annual Arts and Vine Festival was held at the Sanford Civic Center on the last 

weekend of April. Local craftsmen showcased their featured arts and crafts in their 

well-designed booths. You could find almost any type of craft from pottery, to 

glassware, jewelry, handmade quilts, oil soaps, knits, etc. There were too many 

exquisite handicrafts for the eyes to take in. 

At 1 P.M. Saturday, a Chinese music concert began in the lecture room, right across 

from the big exhibit hall. The NC RTP Chinese Music Instrument Ensemble, sponsored 

by Central Carolina Community College Confucius Classroom, offered the town 

residents an auditory feast. In addition to the Chinese folk music instruments such as 

the Pipa, Erhu, Jinghu, Gaohu, Guzhen, Dizi and Hulusi, the ensemble also included 

western musical instruments like guitar and violin, a marvelous combination of 

East and West. Seven classical music pieces were performed successively including 

Harvesting Lotus Roots, Horse Racing, and Washing Clothes in the River for Our Dear 

Soldiers 

After the show, the artists invited the enthusiastic audience on stage and answered 

their individual questions. Ms. Owens was thrilled and said it was her first time 

in Sanford attending such an authentic and high-quality Chinese concert. She 

was looking for future cooperation with the ensemble, to offer more people an 

opportunity to learn about music from China. 

桑福德艺术暨葡萄酒节 

4 月 30 日 ( 周六 ) 桑福德市一年一度的艺术暨葡萄酒节在市政厅如期举行。来自本地的手工艺人在各自的 

展台上陈列了他们的特色手工艺品。陶器、玻璃器皿、首饰、手工床罩、精油香皂、编织品等 , 色彩缤 

纷 , 玲琅满目 , 令人目不暇接。 

下午 1 点整 , 在展会的对面 , 一场原汁原味的中国音乐开始了。由中卡社区学院孔子课堂举办 , 北卡州三 

角区中国民乐团 NC RTP Chinese Music Instrument Ensemble 14 名艺术家给小镇居民们带来了一场听 

觉盛宴。除了中国民乐例如琵琶、二胡、京胡、高胡、古筝、笛子、葫芦丝以外 , 还有吉他、小提琴这 

类西洋乐器 , 可谓中西合璧。乐团演奏了《赛马》、《采莲曲》、《洗衣歌》等 7 首经典曲目。 

表演结束后 , 艺术家们与热情的观众们做了进一步的交流 , 展示乐器并回答观众的各种提问。一位叫 

Owens 的女士 , 说这个演出让她很震撼 , 他对 Sanford 能够举办如此高水准的音乐会表示惊喜 , 她还表 

示希望有机会与该乐团合作 , 让更多的人能够听到来自中国的音乐。
