Damage and Destruction of Religious Objects and Cemeteries In the night of February 14/15, the Cathedral Temple of St. Nicholas in Karlovac was broken into once again. The Karlovac Presbyter Slaviša Simaković explained to Hina news agency that vandals had broken through a side door, desecrated the altar, liturgical objects and books. Some of the objects were stolen, others were left scattered across the temple floor. All crosses were taken and objects used for the baptism ceremony were destroyed so there could be no service for the feast of the Presentation of the Lord. In the night of August 25/26 2015, the same temple was broken into again. The door was damaged and the police said the material damage from the break-in amounted to several thousand kuna. Unknown perpetrators stole a 120-kg bell, an object of considerable cultural and sacral value, from the Orthodox church at Slatinski Drenovac in Viroviticko-Podravska county. The church at Slatinski Drenovac is a protected cultural monument. In the night of August 29/30, unknown perpetrators pried the door to the Saint Archangel Michael’s Temple in Slunj. Scattered chairs and liquor bottles were found in the altar section of the temple. In late August and early September, several tombstones were damaged at the Orthodox cemetery in Nova Gradiška, which dates from the 18 th century. The police was informed and carried out an investigation at the scene. /4.3. Damage and Destruction of Monuments A monument erected at Karadžićevo near Vinkovci to commemorate the local villagers who perished there during October and November 1991 was damaged three times in 2015. In the same village, a marble plaque with the engraved figures of St. Peter and Paul, owned by the Serbian Orthodox Church, was destroyed. The plaque had hung on a wall in the village. In the night of August 16, from Saturday to Sunday, a memorial was damaged at Medari. It was a cross erected in the memory of 65 local residents, mostly civilians, killed in the last war. The owners of web pages Hop.hr and Gradjanska-akcija.official.com should be held responsible, as they publicly announced the next morning that the memorial had been “removed thanks to a joint action”. In Vinkovci on January 29, unknown perpetrators cut off and took with them the bronze head weighing 60 kg from the statue of Josif Runjanin, the composer of the Croatian national anthem and an ethnic Serb. In mid-February, unknown perpetrators damaged an anti-fascist monument at Srdoči in Rijeka by spraying “NDH” and the Ustasha “U” over the names of those who died in World War Two. At the site of a former partisan army camp turned into a memorial site in Begovača near Pakrac, the monument – a five-pointed star – was destroyed with sixteen shots fired from firearms into the star. It had been the second time that the star was vandalised. 33 On the eve of the Anti-fascist Day (June 22), a memorial ossuary of the liberation fighters from World War Two at the Slavonski Brod cemetery was defaced with red paint. A partisan monument at Adžijina street in Zagreb, renovated in 2014, was also disfigured, its red star destroyed with a hammer and the monument covered with graffiti of the Ustasha and Nazi insignia and the slogan “Croatia needs lustration” (referring to the purge of Communist-era officials in Central and Eastern Europe in the 1990s).
