April is Thailand’s hottest month and marks the 

transition between the end of the dry season and the start 

of the rice-growing season. As such, Songkran Festival was 

traditionally considered the beginning of the New Year. It is a 

time to pay respect, let off steam and celebrate. That means 

you can expect two very different kinds of events during 

Songkran: crazy, country-wide water wars and serene 

traditional ceremonies at temples.

Chiang Mai is the best place to join 

the Songkran celebration, which is 

the most celebrated of all the Thai 

festivals. 

From April 13th to 15th, 2017.

ongkran takes place over three days, during April 

13th-15th, but in reality it lasts a week, especially in 

the villages of northern Thailand, where children are 

on holiday and want to play all day. Chiang Mai has a reputation 

for being the most fun city during this water festival. 

Bangkok’s parties may be the biggest and Pattaya’s are 

the longest, but nowhere else sees as much water flying as 

Chiang Mai, which makes it one of the most popular places 

throughout Southeast Asia to visit in mid-April. 

One of the reasons why Songkran in Chiang Mai is the 

wettest is because the weapon of choice is not the water 

gun, as in the other major cities, but the bucket, which ranges 

in size from small sandcastle moulds to industrial-scale pails. 

Chiang Mai also has a unique and easily available source of 

water - the moat running around the old city. 

The biggest party can be found at Thapae Gate on the 

eastern side of the city. There, you will find several stages 

set up and an open-air food market. This is also the scene of 

special performances including the Miss Songkran Beauty 

Pageant, Chiang Mai’s Walking Street Market and one of the 

best places to see the procession of Phra Buddha Sihing to 

Wat Phrasing. Even though the road is still open to traffic 

around the moat, it is usually blocked with ravers and revellers. 

If you would like to take a break, the heart of the old city is a 

much quieter area, with less water players and lots of cafes 

to rest.

TRADITIONS & BELIEFS:

un is actually just one aspect of Chiang Mai 

Songkran festival. It actually has a deep meaning 

and that is to ask for blessing and to enrich religious 

intentions. Traditionally people would use only a light 

sprinkling of water to symbolize purification. As everyone 

wishes for good vibes, house wives clean their houses. On 

the other hand, young individuals are showing their respect 

to elders by pouring fragrant water on their palms. 

Songkran festival in Chiang Mai is divided in three major 

days. The first important day is April 13th, which is called 

Wan Maha Songkran, meaning the day marking the end of 

the old year. This day is pretty much a day of preparation: 

Thai people go to the market and prepare delicious dishes 

for the new year. They also buy equipment for water playing. 

April 14th is Wan Nao (Nao Day). This is an auspicious 

day when everyone must be cheerful, talk politely and not 

behave badly. In the morning, food and offerings for the 

monks are prepared and then distributed to friends and 

relatives the following morning. In the afternoon, sand is 

brought to the temple compounds and sand stupas are made 

as a form of worship to the Lord Buddha. Finally the time 

comes for gently splashing water at one another with a word 

of blessing. 

April 15th is Wan Talerng Sok (Talerng Sok day). This day 

is the most important day of the New Year celebration, this is 

the year when the new year begins. 

Important local traditions includes the making of sand 

stupas in temples decorated with colorful flags (read our 

article pages 22-23) and Lanna drums competitions (read 

our article pages 46-47).

Sand Pagoda 

1. Attend Alms Giving, early morning at 

Thapae Gate (April 13) : 

As the sun rises in Chiang Mai, hundreds 

of Buddhist monks depart from their 

various temples for Thapae Gate. The 

tradition of alms offering dates back to 

the 14th century, yet still today locals 

wake up early to prepare food for the 

monks and wait quietly by the roadside. 

This ceremony is both peaceful and 

spiritual and it gives you a wonderful 

opportunity to experience the real 

Thailand. 

Everyone is welcome to join this Alms 

Giving ceremony, just walk to Thapae 

Gate at around 7am. 

2. Witness the superb procession of 

Phra Phuttha Sihing, a revered 

Buddha image of the North: 

The image is taken in a procession that 

moves from Wat Prasingh and around 

Chiang Mai city. You can view the 

procession on Ratchadamnoen road, 

leading to Wat Prasingh. 

3. Enjoy water splashing around the 

moat: 

Envisage a traffic jam for four days with 

people dancing on top of their cars. This 

epitomises the spirit of Songkran! Part 

of the fun of Songkran festival is to walk 

around the old city’s moat, where most of 

the action takes place. Hundreds of cars 

join in which creates the city’s biggest 

annual traffic jam. 

4. Visit Warorot Market: 

Warorot Market is the biggest market 

in Chiang Mai. Take a few hours to walk 

around and enjoy the experience: people 

will be wearing traditional Chiang Mai blue 

clothes or colorful hawaiin style shirts. 

Traditional Songkran music will play all day, 

putting big smiles on everyone’s faces. 

There will also be many delicious dishes for 

sale. Don’t miss visiting the left side building 

which features more than twenty stands 

of traditional Songkran accessories such 

as flags for sand pagodas, scented water, 

Mai Kham Bo wood and flowers. 

5. Experience traditions unique to 

Chiang Mai such as Mai Kham Bho 

Procession and Sand Offering: 

The Mai Kham Bho Procession is centered 

on the Bho tree, a sacred tree that can 

be found in temples (picture page 10). Bho 

trees are surrounded by wooden supports 

called Mai Kham Bo and these supports 

are placed around the trees in temples. 

Local beliefs say that the act of placing 

support around sacred trees brings luck 

and prosperity to devotees. Mai Kam Bho 

pr cessions usually fall on the same day 

of April as Songkran. 

Another important custom is to build 

sand pagodas in the temples.Vilagers 

arrive in their best clothes with candles, 

joss sticks, flowers, ceremonial flags and 

handfuls of sand. 

The sand is used to make miniature 

pagodas that are decorated with colorful 

flags and sprinkled with scented water.In 

local tradition, when people bring sand to 

the temple, it is a way to compensate for 

any they may have inadvertently carried 

away on the bottom of their shoes during 

the year.

宋干泼水节期间所保有并仍在推动的各类 

活动 , 其中有 : 

• 穿戴崭新的服饰以瞻仰长辈。

• 早晨为僧侣准备食物 , 或者为祖先做功德。 

• 制作沙佛塔。沙佛塔要么是以佛塔或动物的方式出现 , 装饰着

用工程。 

• 出席帕辛佛像游行活动。 

• 放生鱼类和鸟类以做功德 , 听布道及实践五戒。

• 用漂浮着茉莉花的香水沐浴佛像。 

• 为新的僧侣提供长袍。 

• 用干净的水或有香味的香水混合洒在老人手中 , 水里还会浮动 

着茉莉花。 

• 在不违反他人的权利和自由的前提下有礼貌地彼此泼水。

A Shan Celebration 

M 

ae Hong Son’s most famous and colourful festival is 

Poy Sang Long. Held over the first weekend of April, it 

celebrates the ordination into the monkhood of Shan 

boys aged between seven and fourteen years. The time period 

of stay in the temple can vary from one week to many months, 

but it usually last for the duration of the schools’ long vacation. 

Similar rituals take place in Chiang Mai, at Pa Pao temple 

on the 4th, 5th and 6th of April (see city map F2), but the 

Mae Hong Son version is given a unique flavour by its Shan 

elements. 

On the first day of the festival, the boys have their heads 

shaved and are anointed with turmeric and dressed up in the 

colours as a prince, with traditional accessories: long white 

socks, plenty of jewellery, a head cloth decorated with fresh 

flowers, a golden umbrella and heavy face make-up. Beliefs 

have it that boys are dressed up like princes in imitation 

of the Lord Buddha, who was himself a prince before setting 

out on the religious path. They are then announced to the 

guardian spirit of the town and taken around the temples. 

The second day brings general merit making and a 

spectacular parade, headed by a drummer and a richly 

decorated riderless horse, which is believed to carry the 

town’s guardian spirit. The boys, still in their finery, are each 

carried on the shoulders of a chaperone, accompanied by 

musicians and bearers of traditional offerings. In the evening, 

the novices tuck into a sumptuous meal, waited on by their 

parents and relatives, before the ordination ceremony in the 

temple on the third day. 

在夜丰颂最有名最多姿多彩的节日当属 “ 蕙桑龙 ”。为庆祝 7 岁到 14 岁之 

间的男性僧侣 , 每年四月的第一个周末举行。在清迈 , 您可以 “pa pao” 

寺见到 ( 见城市地图 F2) 的第 4, 第 5 和第 6 位。 

节日的第一天 , 孩子们将剃光他们的头发并抹上姜黄在头上 , 打扮成一

Lanna traditions that have traveled 

through generations 

When walking through the streets of Chiang Mai 

during Songkran festival, there are two beautiful 

traditions that you will see in the compounds of 

each temples: the making of sand chedis and the ceremonial 

“tung” flag offerings. These traditions date back over centuries 

and, although they have been adapted to modern times, they 

remain part of Lanna beliefs and culture. 

The making of sand pagodas in temples is a tradition which 

can be observed through the kingdom. According to local 

belief people bring back sand to the temple to compensate 

for the sand they may have inadvertently carried away on 

the bottom of their shoes over the past year. Later, this sand 

will be used by the temple all through the year for diverse 

constructions. 

In the mid-twentieth century, the making of sand pagodas 

was a very popular activity amongst young people in Chiang 

Mai. Sand was brought from the Ping River which, at that 

time, was so dry that people could walk from one side to the 

other. Young women who rarely had the chance to appear 

in public spaces, were permitted to attend the sand activity. 

After splashing water onto each other in the Ping River, they 

would collect sand in silver bowls or buckets and carry it to 

nearby temples. In the compound of the temple, they would 

make small pagodas which were later transformed into one 

large sand pagoda.

The second tradition is the making of Tung: since the 

mid-13th century, these ceremonial flags have been placed on 

top of sand pagodas. Tung is a vertical flag used in Buddhist 

merit-ceremonies to demarcate the boundary of sacred sites; 

no Buddhist ceremony would be considered complete without 

a tung. In Chiang Mai, different kinds of tungs are used for 

many occasions such as parades, Buddhist ceremonies, 

funerals and festivals. They can be made from paper, cloth, 

palm leaves, wood or galvanized iron. 

During Songkran festival, the most common tungs used 

for the ceremonies in the temples are the “Tung Sai Muu” 

and “Tung Dio”. Made of triangular shaped paper, some 

plain, some colorful, and others emblazoned with symbols 

of zodiac animals, they are placed on top and around sand 

pagodas.

A Refreshing & Relaxing Day-Trip 

Adventure off the beaten tourist track and experience one of 

the most unique natural wonders in Thailand. Situated some 

40 kilometres from downtown Chiang Mai, Bua Thong is a 

stunning limestone waterfall. Also known as “The Sticky Waterfall”, it 

is formed by minerals, which enables you to climb without slipping. 

Bua Thong Waterfall is 100 meters and has three levels. Each 

of them is a great place to sit down and enjoy the surrounding 

nature. The rocks are creamy, almost white and they are a wonderful 

contrast to the green trees. The lime also makes the water crystal 

blue and, even if there is no place to swim, it is refreshing to get your 

legs wet and cool off. 

Next to the waterfall there is a short hike to “Nam Phu Chet Si” 

which literally means seven colors fountain. It is a mineral geyser 

that gushes from the ground and flows into streams. This beautiful 

natural scenery combined with very few visitors make this a peaceful 

and tranquil place to relax. 

The road to Bua Thong Waterfall, once off the highway, 

passes through small villages and picturesque rice fields. Thai 

style restaurants are located in the parking area off the waterfall 

and you can also stop on the way and discover local food in the 

villages.

金莲花瀑布 

金莲花瀑布距离清迈市中心约 40 公里 , 是一个很本土的地方 ,

La cuisine du Nord en famille 

Dans le quartier de la vieille ville de Chiang Mai, le 

restaurant Ban Huen Phen est une réelle institution. Sa 

cuisine traditionnelle du nord de la Thailande attire 

locaux, touristes et visiteurs Thailandais de Bangkok. Le 

secret d’une telle réussite se cache derrières un travail 

assidu en famille, depuis plus de cinquante ans. Nous 

avons rencontré Pui-Thanchanok Buruspat, la belle fille: 

attentionnée et toujours souriante, elle nous raconte 

l’histoire de ce restaurant qui a si bonne réputation. 

Assortiment de spécialitées de Chiang Mai 

Quelle est l’histoire du restaurant Ban Huen Phen? 

Ban Huen Phen a été fondé il y a cinquante par ma 

belle-mère, Madame Phen. En Thailandais le nom du 

restaurant signifie “la maison de Phen” et effectivement, sur 

l’emplacement actuel du restaurant, se trouvait à l’époque 

une maison traditionnelle en bois ou elle habitait avec son 

époux et ses quatre enfants. 

La cuisine a toujours été une passion pour ma belle-mère. 

En 1965 elle mit quelques tables dans sa cour et prépara un 

seul et unique plat, le “Khanom Jiin Naam Ngiew”: un plat de 

vermicelles recouverts d’une sauce complexe, faite avec des 

tomates et des côtes de porc. Ses clients étaient principalement 

des professeurs d’école, des employés de mairie et 

des policiers, qui travaillaient dans le quartier. Elle faisait son 

marché tôt le matin, travaillait aux fourneaux, puis vendait 

jusqu’à deux heures de l’après-midi. Aujourd’hui, cinquante 

ans plus tard, cette organisation n’a pas changée, et Madame 

Phen arrive en cuisine tous les jours dès six heures du 

matin afin de surveiller la préparation de chaque plat. 

Ban Huen Phen est aujourd’hui devenu une histoire de 

famille: mon époux supervise les achats, surveille les 

cuisines et vérifie les préparations; je m’occupe de l’accueil 

des clients et de la caisse; notre fille prend les commandes; 

deux tantes et une cousine sont au service des plats 

préparés. Bien sûr nous sommes aidés pour cela par une 

équipe de serveurs, qui travaillent avec nous depuis si 

longtemps qu’ils font un peu partie de la famille eux aussi. 

Combien de plats sont au menu de Ban Huen Phen? 

Ma belle-mère avait commencé avec un seul et unique 

plat mais dès la première année elle avait étendu son menu. 

Aujourd’hui notre carte présente environ 70 plats et 10 

desserts. La cuisine du Nord est quelque peu différente de 

celle qui est en usage dans le reste du pays. Les habitants du 

Nord préfèrent le riz gluant au riz blanc, les saveurs amères 

aux piquantes et ils évitent de se servir de lait de coco. Une 

de nos spécialités est la saucisse grillée: très aromatisée, 

elle est servie accompagnée de “nam phrik ong”, une sauce 

épaisse faite à base de tomate, de porc et de chili. Une 

autre spécialité de la maison est le “Tam Kanoum”, une 

salade de fruit de Jaquier aromatisée aux herbes. Cette 

salade est sans viande et n’est pas épicée, mais se mange 

accompagnée de légumes frais. Et bien sûr, le plat de 

“Khanom Jiin Naam Ngiew” est toujours un des favoris de 

nos clients. 

Depuis combien de temps travaillez-vous à Ban Huen Phen? 

Tam, mon époux, et moi-même nous sommes rencontrés 

sur les bancs de l’école. On peut dire que j’ai moi aussi un 

peu grandi dans ce restaurant. Nous nous sommes mariés 

il y a vingt ans. 

Le restaurant Ban Huen Phen a t’il des succursales? 

Oui. La soeur de mon époux à ouvert une succursale du 

restaurant près du Night Safari. Elle y propose les mêmes 

spécialités que nous et ouvre de 8 heures à 16 heures. Un 

des mes beaux-frères a aussi ouvert un restaurant du même 

nom, il sert à diner. 

Quel est votre plat préféré? 

Sans hésitation le Khanom Jiin Naam Ngiew. Je trouve ce 

plat goûteux et léger, parfait pour des températures tropicales 

comme les nôtres. Et puis, c’est le plat qui a forgé la réputation 

du restaurant Ban Huen Phen.

除了泼水游戏的乐趣 , 宋干节还是一个体现泰国传统和文化的时 

刻 , 而萨巴德柴鼓 (Klong Sabat Chai ) 则是节日的重要组成部 

分。 

萨巴德柴鼓是泰北文化中最有名的鼓。它是由双木棍悬挂 , 由人 

撑着 , 是打鼓演出时的一个组成部分。萨巴德柴鼓 (Klong Sabat 

Chai ) 的字面意思是 “ 通向胜利的鼓 ”, 这种鼓从前通常在战争期 

间使用。有证据表明 , 萨巴德柴鼓最初与兰纳王朝、国王及统治者和 

军队有关。打仗的时候特别设计的鼓点 , 能鼓舞士兵的精神和士气。 

泰国的鼓大多由木材及公牛或母牛的皮制成。寺庙中使用的圣鼓 

还包含一个 “ 心脏 ”, 指的是刻有法术的干葫芦 , 它能让鼓发出给强 

有力的声音 , 从而吸引好的事物 , 抵抗坏的事物 , 包括敌人。如今 , 

不含神圣心脏的鼓被制作为日常使用的打击乐器。但是含有一种神圣 

心脏的鼓 , 只能用棍或手打击 , 如果用下半身的身体部份打击鼓面将 

被视为亵渎。 

如今 , 胜利鼓的声响还能在寺庙宗教仪式、剃度仪式、紧急呼 

叫、游行及表演中听到。宋干节也是见证使用该鼓的好时机 , 因为第

The Magical Klong Sabat Chai

part from the fun of the water games, Songkran 

festival is a time for tradition and culture, and Klong 

Sabat Chai sacred drums are an important part of 

the festival. 

Klong Sabat Chai is the most famous drum in Northern 

culture. Performed as an integral part of the drumming, it 

is hung from double wooden sticks and carried by men. Its 

beating requires agility and virtuosity as it includes the use 

of many body parts, such as the shoulders, elbows, legs and 

head. Klong Sabat Chai drum is played in tune with the sound 

of cymbals. 

Formerly used during wars, the name Klong Sabat Chai 

means “the drum that leads to victory”. Historical evidence has 

shown that Klong Sabat Chai was originally associated with 

the kingdom of Lanna, kings, rulers and the army. The rhythm 

of the drum was designed to uplift the spirit and morale of 

soldiers when going to war. Later, when the power of Lanna 

rulers was reduced, Klong Sabat Chai drums were kept in 

temples where they were played as an offering to Lord Buddha. 

When used in the temple, the name was changed to Klong 

Pucha (worshipping drum.) 

Drums in Thailand are made of wood and cow or bull skin. 

Sacred drums that are used in temples also contain a “heart”, 

referring to a dried bottle gourd engraved with magical 

spells to give it a powerful sound that attracts good while 

warding off the bad, including enemies. Nowadays, drums 

without a sacred heart are made for daily use as percussion 

instruments. But when containing a sacred heart, the drum 

can only be played with sticks or hands, using lower parts of 

the body to play this drum would be considered a sacrilege. 

Today, the sound of victory drum can still be heard during 

religious ceremonies in the temple, shaving ceremonies, 

emergency calls, parades and shows. Songkran festival is 

the perfect time to witness the use of this instrument at 

“Lanna Giant Drums Festival” on the 14th of April, 6pm at 

Phra Singh Temple. This beautiful performance will showcase 

fifteen drum teams from all over Northern Thailand.
