Land Rover and Red Cross
Give Back
• Jonathan Solomons
Land Rover and the Namibia Red
Cross (NRC) society are teaming
up in efforts to give back to the
community.
Although the partnership has been
ongoing for almost half a century globally,
this will be the first time the two
are partnering in the country.
“The Hope Crosses Any Terrain
initiative has been part of the Land
Rover’s corporate social responsibility
globally and in conjunction with the
Namibia Red Cross, the initiative has
been adopted by Land Rover Windhoek
locally,” marketing manager for Novel
Motors, Hayley Allen, said.
Land Rover will be collecting various
items such as non-perishable foods,
clothing and sanitary pads to be distributed
by NRC to communities in need.
Land Rover is currently collecting for
two causes. The first of these causes
is to restore and uplift the dignity of
teenage Namibian girls by providing a
‘Dignity Pack’. A Dignity Pack consists
of a bar of soap, a face cloth, sanitary
towels, toothpaste and a toothbrush.
“The second cause is to assist the
most vulnerable and needy individuals
in Namibia with anything that we can
collect: Tinned food, non-perishable
items, blankets, clothes, towels, toys,
colouring in books and books,” Allen
said. “The Namibia Red Cross will distribute
these items to those in need,” she
added.
Windhoek residents will have the
opportunity to donate items through
PARTNERS ... Liezl Brockerhoff of Land Rover and Bience
Gawanas, chair of the Namibia Red Cross governing board,
stand with one of the boxes in which the public can place
their donations.
collection points that will be situated
at various points in the capital including
the Land Rover showroom at 444
Independence Avenue, the service department
and at certain shops, so keep
an eye out.
The initiative was launched yesterday
morning at the Land Rover showroom,
where memebrs of the media
engaged with the Land Rover team as
well as representatives of NRC.
Bience Gawanas, chair of the Namibia
Red Cross governing board,
said it is important for the public to understand
that NRC is a humanitarian
organisation that was started to lighten
the burden of the most destitute communities
in Namibia.
“Communities know their needs,”
she said, adding that NRC has through
years of community work also identified
which communities has what
needs and will distribute all donations
accordingly.
“When you start taking care of babies,
and start taking care of the youth,
you are in fact creating the adults
which Namibia will need one day,”
BRANDED ... The all new Range Rover Discovery Sport will serve as the donor vehicle for the
duration of the initiative.
Gawanas said, adding that many of the
items donated will also go to young
children and babies.
Gawanas said NRC would eventually
like to see initiatives like this take
place across the country, however for
now donations will only be collected
in Windhoek.
“At the moment we are really looking
at starting here in the Khomas region
and to see how it works. When
you start a new a initiative, you want
to make sure you learn from whatever
lessons there are, and to make sure you
improve on those lessons,” she said.
Gawanas praised Kenya for passing
a law that will provide free sanitary
pads for girls, and expressed
that if Namibia doesn’t move in this
direction, it is the public’s responsibility
to make sure every girl can go to
school without feeling ashamed. “Part
of it has to do with our cultures and
traditions that sees menstruation as
something dirty,” Gawanas said. “I
personally feel if we are distributing
condoms free of charge, we can also
do the same with sanitary towels,” she
added.
“It’s not just new things we are looking
for. We are looking at whatever
can be given so that we can distribute
to those who are in need,” Gawanas
concluded, adding that donors do not
necessarily have to buy something or
donate money, but can also look inside
their own homes for anything they do
not need any more.
