Race Flops

The drag racing event titled Race
Wars 2017, which featured a
dragster from South Africa,
was held last Saturday at the Okahandja
Airstrip.
The hyped event opened their gates
at around 09h00 while the racing was
scheduled to start at 10h00.
Always a crowd pleaser, Adam Mohamed
performed well with his Toyota
Stallion, clocking a blistering 11,55
seconds across the 400 metre mark.
Clocking incredible times however
isn’t the only thing that makes a drag
racing event pleasurable. The essence
of a drag race is to see fast cars competitively
racing one another.
Around 12h30, an announcement
was made stating that drag racers were
to race any participant that was in line
with them at that moment. Thus the
display of mismatched races, namely
Mohamed in his 1JZ powered Stallion
going up against Nolan Angermund’s 1
300 Turbo Toyota Startlet GT. Taking
nothing away from Angermund who
clocked 14,493, a brilliant performance
itself in its class.
An agitated crowd didn’t appreciate
the mismatched races as well as
the fact that entries for racing closed
around 12h00.
Drag racers were turned away after
the announced decision – which was
not included in their advertising.
One of the organisers of the event,
Warren Thomas, said it was an awesome
event and mentioned that the
spectators enjoyed it. He said things
were done in the above mentioned manner
to ensure that event ran smoothly.
The fastest time of the day for cars
came from South Africa’s Zain Ryland
and his Ford Sierra Xrt8tt, clocking
10,89, followed by Michael van Zyl’s
Volkswagen Golf 7R, which clocked
10,95.
Van Zyl’s 7R now holds the record
as the fastest Golf in the country and
the first Golf to breach the 11 second
barrier.
Record holder of Namibia’s fastest
quarter mile time of 10.46 seconds,
Dewaal Theunissen and his Toyota
Levin showed up at the event but didn’t
have any recorded runs. Theunissen
broke the side shafts of his car while
attempting to launch his vehicle during
a race.
Members of the public were not
pleased with lack of competitiveness
in most runs.

Opens at Ongwediva
Indongo Toyota opened a brand-new
dealership at Ongwediva at the end
of May. This latest edition to the
Indongo Toyota family is situated right
next to the main road between Oshakati
and Ondangwa.
One cannot help but to notice this
enormous and modern dealership. This
impressive landmark was an investment
of more than N$40 million and the Frans
Indongo Group of companies did not
spare a cent to make this dealership the
flagship of all their dealerships.
The management team consists of
the dealer principal Tati Kamule, parts
manager Daryl Samuels and service
manager Riaan Basson.
Kamule brings with him 12 years experience
in the motor trade, Samuels 13
years experience in parts and Basson 24
years experience in a workshop.
This Toyota dealership is a fullyfledged
franchise operation. Toyota
fanatics can now buy parts, book their
vehicle in for a service or repairs and/or
buy new or pre-owned vehicles.
Indongo Toyota is now the biggest
Toyota dealership group in Namibia,
boasting five dealerships – Windhoek,
Okahandja, Otjiwarongo, Walvis Bay
and Ongwediva.
Kamule says: “The reason why we
decided to open a new dealership at
Ongwediva is to seize the enormous
opportunity in the North. There was
only one Toyota dealership which was
based at Oshakati. Imagine if customers
were driving all the way from Okongo
to get access. An opportunity was seen
and we took it”.
“Toyota is a brand that people believe
in. Most people grew up with a Toyota in
the family. They are still buying Toyota
because it is a brand they trust and they
have confidence in,” he added.
And the goals set for the dealership?
“I want this dealership to be the number
one dealership in the whole of Namibia!

sell the full Toyota range of vehicles,
from the entry level Aygo and Etios and
the family car Corolla to the stylish RAV.
The best-selling bakkie range, the Hilux,
and the most popular Fortuner add to

to come and visit us.”
The Ongwediva branch is open
Mondays to Fridays from 07h00 to
17h00 and Saturdays from 08h30
to 12h00. The workshop is open on
Saturdays for services, but bookings
are essential.
