High School Foundation
awards the Maroon Apple
each semester to a teacher
or support staff member who
has gone “above and beyond”
for students and their
colleagues. The award honors
a member of each campus
who truly displays Porter
pride every day in their
words and actions.
Along with the honor, the
Maroon Apple comes with
a monetary gift card and a
traveling trophy to be displayed
in the classroom for
the remainder of the school
year.
For the first semester of
the 2017-2018 school year,
the foundation received applications
for many worthy
recipients, but two stood
out for their continued efforts
to make LTHS a
better place to learn and
teach.

Apple Award was given to
science teacher Karen Murphy.
Murphy was chosen for
her innovation, dedication
and tireless efforts to keep
biology classes relevant to
students.
The Central Campus Maroon
Apple was awarded to
special education teacher
Erika Bochnak. Bochnak
has led the success of the
Souper Tuesday Café, which
provides students the opportunity
to learn restaurant duties
while serving great food
to LTHS staff in a converted
classroom.
What is one essential you must have when
studying?
One essential I must have when I study is
peace and quiet. I won’t focus in a room that
is distracting or loud.
What do you like to do when not in school or
studying?
I like to play a sport like basketball, or
volleyball. I also like to play guitar, sing, or
dance.
What is your dream job?
I love helping people so much, and since I
was a kid my dream job is a doctor. I really
hope I can pursue my dream someday.
What are some of your most played songs
on your iPod?
I play many songs, too many to name.
Usually, I listen to pop songs.
What is one thing people do not know about
you?
One thing most people don’t know about
me is I’m Arabic and a Muslim and I’m
proud to be one.
Whom do you look up to and why?
I look up to my parents, because they are
inspirations to me and encourage me to follow
my dreams.
What do you keep under your bed?
I keep a memory box under my bed filled
with memories like pictures and notes.
Who is your favorite teacher and why?
I like all my teachers, because they all are
so kind and helpful. The teachers want to
help you reach your goal.

What is your favorite class and why?
My favorite class is math, because it
makes me work hard and gets challenging.
What is one thing that stands out about
your school?
One thing that stands out in my school is
how much we help each other and other people.
Also, how many donations we do.
What extracurricular(s) do you wish your
school had?
I wish my school had a study group or a
group to socialize to help other students and
ourselves.
What is your morning routine?
I wake up, go to the bathroom, brush my
teeth, get dressed and do my hair. Then, I go
downstairs and eat breakfast. Next, I get my
shoes and sometimes coat. I wait for the bus
and head to school.
If you could change one thing about school,
what would it be?
I wouldn’t change anything; I like our
school.
What is your favorite thing to eat in the
cafeteria?
My favorite thing to eat in the cafeteria is
our school’s nachos and Naked smoothies.
What is your best memory from school?
My best memory from school was being
a leader to get a chance to help others and
make a difference.
