km away from Ano Mera, and about 12 km from town.

then returning to your cocooned base at the novel Semeli 

at Merchia– is certainly a valid option! 

Much more –and significantly more flexible, and that’s 

not to mention non judgemental– than your typical nature 

retreat, the Semeli Merchia, allows you to be you; whilst

Mykonos? Blue and gold beaches, most likely; along with

Windmill’s History & Use 

Their story goes back to the 16th century, when Mykonos 

laid on the major trade route between the grand citystate 

of Venice and the eastern Mediterranean. Managing to 

harness the considerable power of the winds through 

technological innovation, the Venetians, who ruled the island 

at the time, constructed the first windmills in order to 

grind local and imported agricultural yields, mostly wheat 

and barley. The resulting flour covered internal as well as 

external needs. For among other things it was used to produce 

rusks –paximadia– a kind of dried bread that could 

be preserved for months. This advantage in turn made 

rusks the main source of carbohydrates for sailors; so the 

port of Mykonos became a necessary stop for supplies for 

all sailing boats passing through the Cyclades. Markedly 

contributing to the island’s financial growth and prosperity, 

Mykonian windmills –in their heyday there were about 28 

of them all over the island, 10 out of which strategically 

located in the Kato Mili complex, near the harbor– flourished 

until the 19th century. With the advent of industrialization 

however, traditional grinding methods started to

Η ιστορία τους χρονολογείται από τον 16ο αιώνα, όταν η 

Μύκονος βρισκόταν στο διάβα του κύριου εμπορικού μονοπατιού 

μεταξύ της κυρίαρχης τότε Βενετίας και της ανατολικής 

Μεσογείου. Με την έξυπνη διαχείριση των δυνατοτήτων 

των ανέμων μέσω της τεχνολογικής καινοτομίας, οι Βενετοί 

δημιούργησαν τους πρώτους ανεμόμυλους για να αλέσουν 

τα ευρείας κατανάλωσης, τοπικά και εισαγόμενα, γεωργικά 

προϊόντα: το σιτάρι και το κριθάρι. Το αλεύρι που προέκυπτε 

από τη διαδικασία μπορούσε να καλύψει τόσο τις εσωτερικές 

όσο και τις εξωτερικές ανάγκες. Μεταξύ άλλων χρησιμοποιήθηκε 

για την παραγωγή παξιμαδιών, μια μορφή ψωμιού 

που μπορούσε να διατηρηθεί για μήνες. Αυτό τους το πλεονέκτημα 

τα έκανε την κύρια πηγή υδατανθράκων για τους 

ναυτικούς. Οπότε και το λιμάνι της Μυκόνου έγινε απαραίτητη 

στάση για προμήθειες για όλα τα ιστιοφόρα που διέσχιζαν 

τις Κυκλάδες. Συμβάλλοντας στην οικονομική ανάπτυξη 

και την ευημερία του νησιού, οι ανεμόμυλοι της Μυκόνου 

–στο απόγειό τους αριθμούσαν περί τους 28 σε όλο το νησί, 

με τους 10 να βρίσκονται στρατηγικά τοποθετημένοι στο 

συγκρότημα Κάτω Μύλοι, κοντά στο λιμάνι– ήκμασαν μέχρι

ecome obsolete. By the 1960’s the once prolific windmills 

have altogether ceased their operation. Nowadays 16 of 

them still stand, most thoroughly renovated. Some have 

been converted into smart lodgings, others into heritage 

monuments testifying to Mykonos’ agricultural past. Yet 

whatever their function or purpose, these antique windmills 

constitute one of the most powerful Mykonian icons: 

an image that has circulated the globe many times over 

and is unfalteringly associated with the glorious Greek 

summer. 

Tip: 

Catch a glimpse of an age and occupation gone by visiting 

Bonis Mill – the core of Mykonos’ Agricultural Museum. 

The first of its kind in the country, this ancient mill is faithfully 

restored to its original condition, featuring authentic 

tools like a waterwheel, an outdoor oven and a wine press. 

Set about exploring all three floors of the typical cylindrical, 

whitewashed structure –which is a prime example of 

the rural vernacular architecture– but also have a look at 

the adjacent miller’s home, complete with period decorations. 

Apart from its considerable historic interest, Bonis 

Mill is also one of the most photogenic spots on the island: 

ideal for watching and savoring the trademark Mykonian 

sunset unfolding in the horizon; yet without the customary 

tourist hordes. Open from July-September, free admission.

Σήμερα διασώζονται 16 από αυτούς και έχουν ανακαινιστεί 

πλήρως. Ορισμένοι έχουν μετατραπεί σε πολυτελή καταλύματα, 

άλλοι σε μνημεία πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς που μαρτυρούν 

το γεωργικό παρελθόν της Μυκόνου. Ωστόσο, όποια 

κι αν είναι η λειτουργία τους ή ο σκοπός τους, αυτοί οι παλιοί 

ανεμόμυλοι αποτελούν ένα από τα ισχυρότερα σύμβολα της 

Μυκόνου: μια εικόνα διεθνώς αναγνωρίσιμη, άρρηκτα συνδεδεμένη 

με το ένδοξο ελληνικό καλοκαίρι. 

Συμβουλή: 

Ταξίδεψε πίσω στο χρόνο με μια επίσκεψη στο Μύλο του 

Μπόνη – την καρδιά του Αγροτικού Μουσείου της Μυκόνου. 

Πρώτος του είδους του στη χώρα, αυτός ο παμπάλαιος 

μύλος αποκαταστάθηκε πιστά στην αρχική του μορφή, 

διατηρώντας τις αυθεντικές εγκαταστάσεις και τα εργαλεία 

του, όπως τον τροχό νερού, τον υπαίθριο φούρνο και το πατητήρι 

σταφυλιών. Εξερεύνησε και τους τρεις ορόφους του 

–που είναι ένα εξαιρετικό δείγμα της παραδοσιακής αγροτικής 

αρχιτεκτονικής– και επισκέψου το σπίτι του μυλωνά 

που βρίσκεται δίπλα και είναι διακοσμημένο στο στυλ της 

εποχής. Πέρα από το σημαντικό ιστορικό ενδιαφέρον του, 

ο Μύλος του Μπόνη είναι επίσης ένα από τα πιο φωτογενή 

σημεία του νησιού: ιδανικό για να παρακολουθήσεις και ν’ 

απολαύσεις το μυκονιάτικο ηλιοβασίλεμα που ξεδιπλώνεται 

στον ορίζοντα, μακριά από τις ορδές των τουριστών. Ανοιχτός

Star studded chef Ioannis Parikos, one of the most 

talented and respected Greek culinarians, was lucky 

enough to begin his career at Varoulko: The Michelin 

awarded restaurant which unfalteringly belongs 

amongst the best in the country for 20 years now. 

Learning on the side of legendary chef Leuteris Lazarou, 

Parikos acquired a solid technical basis that helped 

him evolve and flourish through his work in several 

internationally acclaimed establishments, in Greece 

and abroad. His extensive range of collaborations include 

the 3-star Epicure of the Hotel Bristol in Paris, 

the 2-star Sea Grill in Brussels, but also Spondi, Hytra, 

Life Gallery and Water Restaurant in Chalkidiki, for 

which he secured 10 prestigious Xrysoi Skoufoi awards 

(Golden chef toques) in 10 consecutive years. 

This season the celebrated chef joins forces with the 

Semeli: the It crowd’s favorite hotel in Mykonos Town 

that is more often than not behind the birth of all new 

trends in the glamorous Island of the Winds.

«αστεράτος» Γιάννης Παρίκος, ένας από τους 

πιο ταλαντούχους και αξιόλογους Έλληνες σεφ, 

είχε την τύχη να ξεκινήσει από το Βαρούλκο, το βραβευμένο 

με ένα αστέρι Michelin εστιατόριο, που τότε 

όπως και τώρα, μετά από 20 χρόνια, ήταν από τα καλύτερα 

στη χώρα μας. Μαθητεύοντας δίπλα στον «θρυλικό» 

Λευτέρη Λαζάρου, ο Γιάννης Παρίκος έλαβε στέρεες 

μαγειρικές βάσεις που τον βοήθησαν να εξελιχθεί 

και να εργαστεί σε εστιατόρια ανάλογου βεληνεκούς 

στην Ελλάδα και στο εξωτερικό. Εκτός των άλλων έχει 

περάσει από τις κουζίνες του τριάστερου Epicure του 

Hotel Bristol στο Παρίσι, του διάστερου Sea Grill των 

Βρυξελλών, αλλά και των Σπονδή, Hytra, Life Gallery 

και Water Restaurant στη Χαλκιδική, για το οποίο απέσπασε 

10 Χρυσούς Σκούφους, έναν για κάθε χρόνο 

της παρουσίας του εκεί. 

Σήμερα ο άξιος κάτοχος ενός αστεριού Michelin ενώνει 

τις δυνάμεις του με το Semeli, τo αγαπημένο ξενοδοχείο 

των χιπ και των εστέτ στη Χώρα της Μυκόνου, 

από το οποίο ξεκινούν όλες οι νέες τάσεις.

«You can have sushi in Mykonos. Or french, italian, american, 

tapas and everything in between – fusion is very 

much in vogue. However, it won’t be that easy to find 

a memorable, representative and thoroughly delectable, 

contemporary Greek cuisine. Greece though is much 

more than its landscapes or beaches. It is also its people, 

customs and folks, music, dance, habits, culture and gastronomy. 

Those who visit our country want to know what 

Greece is all about; and a great way to do so is through its 

tastes». With this mindset, Ioannis Parikos nowadays creates 

at the Semeli a cuisine which is based on Greece and 

its products; whilst especially at the Krama restaurant the 

emphasis lies on time honored, traditional recipes. «We 

believe that the Greek element is rather absent from the 

island’s gastronomic scene. This is why we have put together 

a Greek oriented menu», Parikos stresses. 

This applies to both of the Semeli restaurants, however 

Thioni has a more international flair so as to appeal to a 

broader range of palates. Krama, on the other hand, proffers 

a balanced as much as imaginative amalgam of classic 

Greek dishes, reinterpreted according to the zeitgeist’s man-

ισπανικό και οποιοδήποτε άλλο ενδιάμεσο σ’ αυτά

θα βρεις αξιόλογη και αντιπροσωπευτική, σύγχρονη ελληνική

σκεπτικό, ο Γιάννης Παρίκος δημιουργεί φέτος στο Semeli 

μια κουζίνα με βάση τα ελληνικά προϊόντα, ενώ στο Krama, 

ιδιαίτερα, δίνεται έμφαση στις ελληνικές παραδοσιακές συνταγές. 

«Θεωρούμε ότι από το νησί λείπει η ελληνικότητα 

στη γαστρονομία κι αυτός ήταν ο λόγος που δημιούργησα 

ένα τέτοιο μενού», τονίζει ο Παρίκος. 

Αν και το ελληνικό στοιχείο κυριαρχεί και στα δύο εστιατόρια 

του ξενοδοχείου, το Thioni διαθέτει μια πιο διεθνή αύρα, 

έτσι ώστε να μπορεί να ικανοποιεί ευρύτερη γκάμα ουρανίσκων. 

Το Krama, από την άλλη, προσφέρει ένα τόσο ισορροπημένο 

όσο και ευφάνταστο αμάλγαμα κλασικών ελληνικών 

πιάτων ιδωμένων υπό νέα οπτική: «Έχουμε δώσει ιδιαίτερη

Ο Παρίκος προσπαθεί να έχουν όλα του τα πιάτα κάτι 

ιδιαίτερο, το οποίο κάποιος θα μπορεί ν’ αγαπήσει. Ενδεικτικά, 

το μενού περιλαμβάνει γεύσεις όπως το σιγομαγειρεμένο 

αρνάκι με σελινόριζα και πλιγούρι από πράσινο 

καβουρδισμένο σιτάρι, που είναι και το αγαπημένο του 

ιδίου, λόγω της ιδιαίτερης προτίμησης που τρέφει στο 

αρνί. 

«Αυτό που θέλουμε να πετύχουμε με το μενού στο 

Krama είναι να ταξιδέψουμε γαστρονομικά το κοινό του 

εστιατορίου ανά την επικράτεια και να του συστήσουμε

can fall in love. Indicatively the menu includes dishes 

such the slow cooked lamb with celeriac and bulgur from 

green roasted wheat. This is actually the chef’s favorite as 

he is partial to lamb. 

«Our goal with Krama’s menu is to invite its guests to 

embark on a culinary journey throughout the country. We 

want to introduce them to local flavors, as well as traditional 

Greek tastes, through our creations», he states. 

After all, Greece, and all things Greek, are rapidly evolving 

into a cutting edge trend worldwide. «During the past 

few years, Greek gastronomy has been on the rise, with 

the aid of the considerable tourist influx in our country. 

Greek chefs and producers nowadays leverage local 

products – something quite unusual before. We can now 

positively say that gastronomy in Greece has reached a 

very satisfactory level», Parikos asserts, and adds: «Mykonos, 

with its great popularity and its glamorous jetsetters, 

couldn’t be absent from this game. More and more restaurants 

in the island gain significant awards and distinctions; 

in fact they have nothing to be jealous of in relation to the 

capital’s finer establishments». 

A growing number of high end Athenian restaurants 

move to Mykonos for the summer season, bringing along 

their «rock star’ chefs. «Any celebrity culinarian must 

combine experience, diligent work and impeccable gastronomic 

credentials, if the restaurant that they lead is 

to flourish. Certainly for a cook to gain recognition, years 

of hard effort are required. Both in terms of education 

as well as of practicing that knowledge», Parikos underlines. 

«In a cosmopolitan destination, such as Mykonos, a 

chef’s prestige plays a marked role in the popularity of the 

restaurant. We shouldn’t forget however that the culinary 

result must match said reputation, if the restaurant is to 

be truly successful», he concludes. 

Having time and again proven his talent, ingenuity and 

creative prowess through a host of palatable collaborations, 

Ioannis Parikos, this year creates his magic at Krama 

and Thioni of the Semeli. Accompanying him in this 

undertaking is another gifted chef, Yiannis Kotzias.

Παρίκος. Και συμπληρώνει: «Η Μύκονος, με τη μεγάλη 

δημοφιλία και τους jetsetters της, δεν θα μπορούσε να 

λείπει από αυτή την κούρσα της γαστρονομίας. Όλο και 

περισσότερα εστιατόριά της αποσπούν σημαντικές διακρίσεις 

και δεν έχει τίποτα πλέον να ζηλέψει από την 

πρωτεύουσα στο θέμα της γαστρονομίας». 

Καθώς ουκ ολίγα celebrity Αθηναϊκά εστιατόρια μεταφέρονται 

το καλοκαίρι στο Νησί των Ανέμων, μαζί 

τους μετοικούν για τη σεζόν «σταρ» μάγειρες με θρυλική 

φήμη. «Η εμπειρία, η καλή δουλειά και τα διαπιστευτήρια 

που έχει δώσει στο χώρο της γαστρονομίας είναι 

αυτά που θα κάνουν το εστιατόριο στο οποίο ηγείται ο 

οποιοσδήποτε φημισμένος σεφ να ανθίσει. 

Βέβαια, για να αποκτήσει αναγνώριση ένας μάγειρας 

θέλει αρκετά χρόνια σκληρής προσπάθειας τόσο σε επίπεδο

Civilization 

Glistening white, highly stylized, schematic flat figurines: 

you might have come across them in the works of 

the 50’s and 60’s, Western European painters and sculptors: 

Constantin Brancusi, Pablo Picasso, Henry Moore, 

Amedeo Modigliani… 

Though somewhat overlooked in the discourse surrounding 

the trajectories of modernism, the source of inspiration 

of these minimalistic emblems of the avant-garde is none 

other than a significant ancient tradition: the Cycladic art 

and civilization. A prehistoric culture, which flourished in 

the Aegean during the early Bronze Age (3200-1100 B.C); 

predating two other major civilizations of the area, namely 

the Minoan and the Mycenaean.

Τhe Cyclades are a cluster of islands, thus named as they 

form a circle at the epicentre of which lies the sacred

έτσι καθώς σχηματίζουν έναν κύκλο, στο κέντρο του οποίου 

βρίσκεται η ιερή γενέτειρα της Αρτέμιδος και του Απόλλωcal 

evidence suggests, they were inhabited as far back as 

the 8th millennium B.C. Yet permanent human activity 

dates from the Neolithic period, in fact several millennia 

prior to the emergence of the Cycladic culture. The oldest 

settlement was discovered on the islet of Saliagos, near 

Antiparos, and is attributed to around 5000 B.C. Little is 

known about these prehistoric people and their world; but 

it is believed that the earliest inhabitants of the Cyclades 

cultivated barley and wheat and supplemented their diet 

with fish from the Aegean. 

Cycladic civilization 

• 

Thanks to the advantageous geographical position between 

Greece and the East and the year round mild climate, 

these primitive Neolithic communities evolved; giving 

rise to the Cycladic civilization which thrived in the 3rd 

millennium. 

The Early Cycladic period is divided into three distinct 

phases, named in honor of the places in which discoveries 

were made: Grotta-Pelos (3200-2800 B.C.), Keros-Syros 

(2800-2300 B.C.), Phylacopi I (2300-2000 B.C.). This peνα,

Κυκλαδικός πολιτισμός 

Χάρη στην προνομιακή γεωγραφική τους θέση μεταξύ Ελλάδας 

και Ανατολής, και στο ήπιο κλίμα όλο το χρόνο, αυτές 

οι πρωτόγονες νεολιθικές κοινότητες εξελίχθηκαν οδηγώντας 

στον Κυκλαδικό πολιτισμό, που αναπτύχθηκε την 3η 

χιλιετία π.X. 

Η Πρωτοκυκλαδική περίοδος χωρίζεται σε τρεις ξεχωριστές 

φάσεις, που ονομάζονται προς τιμήν των σημείων 

όπου έγιναν ανακαλύψεις: Γρόττα-Πηλός (3200- 

2800 π.Χ.), Κέρος-Σύρος (2800-2300 π.Χ.), Φυλακωπή

iod segued into the archaeologically dimmer Middle Cycladic 

(circa 2000 B.C.), which was followed by the Late 

Cycladic sequence (circa 1500 B.C.). By the end of this 

phase, there was in essence a convergence between the 

Cycladic and Minoan civilizations. 

Early Cycladic period: Art 

Remains uncovered even in the smallest of the Cycladic 

islands, speak of independent small communities based 

on emmer wheat and wild-type barley, sheep and goats, 

pigs, and tuna that were speared from small boats. 

There are also signs of copper-working. But the Cycladic 

Early Bronze age culture is best known for its schematic 

flat female idols carved out of the islands’ pure white 

marble. 

These primordial, abstract figurines, superbly elegant 

in their simplicity, would many eons later become a major 

source of influence in the work of modernist masters, 

the likes of Brancusi or Modigliani. «A handsome 

standing figure, with quiet, unassertive rhythms and balanced 

proportions, it achieves one of the most compelling 

early statements of the human form», states Lord 

Colin Renfrew, former Disney Professor of archaeology 

at Cambridge, in his account of the Bronze Age Cycladic 

sculptures. 

Early Cycladic Period: Life 

These Bronze Age Cycladic figurines point to an advanced 

early society and culture with distinct artistic sensibilities 

and a high level of craftsmanship. 

In the first period, communities are built on low hills 

close to the sea, for protection from floods and enemies. 

Their residents are active in fishing and farming. Gradually, 

however, external invaders –Minoans possibly– force 

them to retreat further inland. They build walls and houses 

next to each other with only small runways left between 

them for defensive purposes. In the third and final phase 

of the Early Cycladic period, settlements once more reemerge 

close to the Cycladic shores. The influence of Minoan 

Crete is strong and these seaside hamlets constitute 

centres of conduct of the Cretan trade. 

Middle and Late Cycladic Period 

This trend continues well into the next period. As evidence 

from Milos, Paros, Kea, Thera, Therasia, Delos, Tinos, 

Syros, Sifnos and Amorgos suggests, settlements of

Πρωτοκυκλαδική περίοδος: Τέχνη 

Ευρήματα που ανακαλύπτονται ακόμη και στα μικρότερα 

νησιά των Κυκλάδων μιλούν για μικρές κοινότητες βασισμένες 

για την επιβίωσή τους στο άγριο σιτάρι και το κριθάρι, 

στα πρόβατα και τις κατσίκες, στους χοίρους και τους τόνους 

που αλιεύονται από μικρά σκάφη. Υπάρχουν επίσης 

σημάδια επεξεργασίας του χαλκού. Ωστόσο η Πρωτοκυκλαδική 

περίοδος είναι κυρίως γνωστή για τα επίπεδα γυναικεία 

ειδώλια τα σμιλεμένα στο καθαρό λευκό μάρμαρο των 

νησιών. Αυτά τα αρχέγονα, αφηρημένα ειδώλια, εξαιρετικά 

κομψά στην απλότητά τους, θα αποτελέσουν αιώνες αργότερα 

σημαντική πηγή επιρροής στο έργο των μετρ του μοντερνισμού, 

όπως ο Brancusi ή ο Modigliani. 

«Μια όμορφη όρθια φιγούρα, με ήσυχους ρυθμούς και 

ισορροπημένες αναλογίες, επιτυγχάνει μια από τις πιο συναρπαστικές 

πρώιμες αναπαραστάσεις της ανθρώπινης μορφής», 

δηλώνει ο Λόρδος Colin Renfrew, πρώην καθηγητής 

αρχαιολογίας στο Cambridge, στη μελέτη του για τα κυκλαδικά 

γλυπτά της Εποχής του Χαλκού. 

Πρωτοκυκλαδική περίοδος: Ζωή 

Αυτά τα κυκλαδικά ειδώλια της Εποχής του Χαλκού δείχνουν 

μια προηγμένη κοινωνία και έναν εξελιγμένο πολιτισμό, 

με ξεχωριστές καλλιτεχνικές ευαισθησίες και υψηλό 

επίπεδο τεχνικής. 

Στην πρώτη περίοδο, οι κοινότητες είναι χτισμένες σε 

χαμηλούς λόφους κοντά στη θάλασσα, για προστασία από 

πλημμύρες και εχθρούς. Οι κάτοικοί τους ασχολούνται με 

την αλιεία και τη γεωργία. Σταδιακά όμως οι εξωτερικοί 

εισβολείς –ίσως οι Μινωίτες– τους αναγκάζουν να υποχωρήσουν 

στην ενδοχώρα. Κατασκευάζουν τοίχους και σπίτια 

πλάι πλάι, με μικρούς μόνο διαδρόμους μεταξύ τους, για 

αμυντικούς σκοπούς. Στην τρίτη και τελική φάση της Πρωτοκυκλαδικής 

περιόδου, οι οικισμοί βρίσκονται και πάλι 

κοντά στις κυκλαδίτικες ακτές. Η επιρροή της Μινωικής 

Κρήτης είναι ισχυρή κι αυτά τα παραθαλάσσια χωριουδάκια 

αποτελούν διαμετακομιστικά κέντρα του κρητικού 

εμπορίου.

the Middle Cycladic period (2000-1550 B.C.) are coastal 

ports, on the trade route between Crete and the rest of 

Greece. In the beginning of the Late Cycladic period, the 

islands are markedly influenced by the Minoans’ domination 

of the sea. As the highly organized palatial culture 

of Crete rises to prominence, so do the islands fade into 

insignificance. 

The only exception is Delos, which retains its archaic 

reputation as a sanctuary and major pilgrimage site 

through the aeons. 

The Minoans’ supremacy would however come to an 

end, during this Late Cycladic period. The eruption of the 

volcano in Thera around 1520 B.C. is assumed to have 

caused the destruction of the intricate Minoan civilization. 

The Minoans would be subsequently replaced by the Mycenaeans 

as the dominant power in the Aegean, and the 

Cyclades would come under their sphere of influence. 

Cycladic Art in modernity 

The Cycladic culture was largely forgotten until the late 

19th century. It was then when

για την εμπορική σύνδεση της Κρήτης με την υπόλοιπη Ελλάδα. 

Στην αρχή της Ύστερης Κυκλαδικής περιόδου, τα νησιά 

επηρεάζονται σημαντικά από την κυριαρχία των Μινωιτών 

στη θάλασσα. Καθώς η εξαιρετικά οργανωμένη Παλατιανή 

κουλτούρα της Κρήτης κερδίζει έδαφος, τα νησιά ξεθωριάζουν. 

Μόνη εξαίρεση η Δήλος, η οποία διατηρεί διά μέσου 

των αιώνων την αρχαϊκή της φήμη ως ιερός τόπος προσκυνήματος 

και σημαντικό εμπορικό σημείο. 

Ωστόσο, η υπεροχή των Μινωιτών δεν έμελλε να διαρκέσει 

αιώνια. Η έκρηξη του ηφαιστείου στη Θήρα, γύρω 

στο 1520 π.Χ., εικάζεται ότι προκάλεσε την καταστροφή του 

ιδιαίτερα εξελιγμένου Μινωικού πολιτισμού. Οι Μινωίτες θα 

αντικατασταθούν στη συνέχεια από τους Μυκηναίους ως 

κυρίαρχη δύναμη στο Αιγαίο, και οι Κυκλάδες θα μπουν στη 

σφαίρα επιρροής τους.

Η Κυκλαδική Τέχνη στη νεωτερικότητα 

Ο Κυκλαδικός πολιτισμός ξεχάστηκε ως τα τέλη του 19ου 

αιώνα. Ήταν τότε που Ευρωπαίοι ταξιδιώτες σε αποστολές 

στην Ελλάδα άρχισαν να επιστρέφουν στις πατρίδες τους με 

κάποια περίεργα αντικείμενα: μαρμάρινα αφηρημένα ειδώλια 

που βρισκόντουσαν στα αρχαία νεκροταφεία των νησιών. 

Αρχικά θεωρήθηκαν πρωτόγονα και άσχημα ή, στην καλύτερη, 

εκκεντρικότητες από το σκοτεινό παρελθόν. Αυτό όμως

of statue! Many Cycladic graves were as a result looted 

during the 1950’s and 1960’s. About 1,600 figurines were 

unearthed; many of them illegally traded and sold to the 

highest bidder; thereby causing irreparable damage to the 

archaeological records. What’s more, the historical significance 

of Cycladic art has been further obscured by the 

proliferation of forgeries during the 1960’s. 

One of the reactions against this distortion and looting 

was the establishment of the Museum of Cycladic Art in 

Athens in 1986 by Dolly and Nikos Goulandris. The museum 

houses one of the most complete private collections 

of Cycladic art worldwide. Apart from the famed marble 

sculptures, the museum’s collection also includes other creations,

αποτελούν αντικείμενο αρχαιοκαπηλίας, οπότε η ζημιά στα 

αρχαιολογικά αρχεία είναι ανεπανόρθωτη. Επιπλέον, η ιστορική 

σημασία της κυκλαδικής τέχνης θα συσκοτιστεί περαιτέρω 

μέσα από τον πολλαπλασιασμό των απομιμήσεων που 

γεμίζουν κυριολεκτικά τον τόπο τη δεκαετία του 1960. 

Μία από τις αντιδράσεις εναντίον αυτής της παραμόρφωσης 

και λεηλασίας ήταν η ίδρυση του Μουσείου Κυκλαδικής 

Τέχνης στην Αθήνα το 1986 από τους Ντόλλυ και Νίκο

Neither Leonardo (DiCaprio) nor Lindsay (Lohan) is Mykonos’ 

greatest celebrity. In fact the island’s shiniest star is 

not even human, but a plump, white feathered bird with 

a long beak and a squeaky voice, who goes by the name 

Petros. And to whom movie 

idols, royalty and A listers 

have been unfalteringly 

paying their respects ever 

since the 1950’s: As the 

story goes, during Queen 

Frederica’s royal cruise to 

the Greek islands in 1954, 

a wounded pelican was 

found on Mykonos’ shores 

and nursed back to life 

by a local fisherman. The 

bird was named in honor 

of another Mykonian who 

was executed by the Germans 

during World War II. 

The adorable animal soon 

became the darling of the jetsetters –the likes of Jackie 

O– who were then starting to discover the island. After the 

original Petros’ demise in an unfortunate traffic accident in 

the 80’s, the America’s former first lady who was well and 

truly enamored with him, donated another pelican to the 

island. This tradition continues up to today.

ήδη από τα μέσα της δεκαετίας του 

1950. Η ιστορία ξεκινάει το 1954, όταν 

κατά τη διάρκεια μιας κρουαζιέρας της 

βασίλισσας Φρειδερίκης στα ελληνικά 

νησιά, ένας τραυματισμένος πελεκάνος 

θα βρεθεί στα παράλια της Μυκόνου. 

Ένας ψαράς της περιοχής θα τον περισυλλέξει 

και θα τον περιθάλψει. Παίρνοντας 

τ’ όνομά του από έναν άλλο 

Μυκονιάτη, θύμα του Δευτέρου Παγκοσμίου 

Πολέμου, ο Πέτρος θα γίνει

Granted, the rocky, trademark Mykonian landscape is 

poor in flora. Yet it is far richer in fauna than one might 

think. In fact it boasts its signature animals – the large, 

spiky lizards that lounge prettily on the rocks and the 

dry stone fences. Locals call them 

«crocodiles» even nowadays, αs 

the Ionians who once inhabited 

Mykonos used to do several aeons 

ago. In fact the very species 

of the crocodile owes its name 

to this characteristic Mykonian 

creature: when the Ionians arrived 

in Egypt, they thought that 

the at the time called champsai 

swimming in the Nile, looked like 

the lizards in Mykonos and thus 

named them «crocodiles», too.

Mykonos’ pristine beauty. But in point 

of fact the trademark whitewashed 

houses of Chora were yellow, pink 

or blue until the 1930’s, when former 

Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas decreed 

that for hygienic purposes all 

Cycladic residences must be covered 

with lime. Cholera was plaguing the 

country, and lime was at the time the 

most potent disinfectant. The once 

colorful houses then, turned white 

overnight under the watchful eye of 

the local policemen.

Mykonos has over 700 churches (80 of which are classified 

as historical museums and about 60 are to be found 

in Chora), more than 200 bars and restaurants, but only 

31 taxis! 

Η Μύκονος έχει πάνω από 700 εκκλησίες (με τις 80 από 

αυτές να ταξινομούνται ως ιστορικά μουσεία και τις 60 περίπου 

να βρίσκονται στη Χώρα), περισσότερα από 200 μπαρ 

και εστιατόρια, αλλά μόνο 31 ταξί! 

Το βραχώδες τοπίο, σήμα κατατεθέν του νησιού, είναι φτωχό 

σε χλωρίδα. Ωστόσο είναι πιο πλούσιο σε πανίδα απ’ 

όσο θα μπορούσες να υποθέσεις. Έτσι, μπορεί να υπερηφανεύεται 

για τα μοναδικά ζώα του – τις μεγάλες, ακιδωτές 

σαύρες που λιάζονται αμέριμνες 

στους βράχους και τους ξηρούς 

πέτρινους φράχτες. Οι ντόπιοι, 

ακόμα και σήμερα, τις αποκαλούν 

«κροκόδειλους», όπως και οι Ίωνες 

που κατοικούσαν στο νησί κατά την 

αρχαιότητα. Στην πραγματικότητα, 

το ίδιο το είδος του κροκόδειλου 

οφείλει τ’ όνομά του σ’ αυτό το 

χαρακτηριστικό Μυκονιάτικο πλάσμα: 

όταν οι Ίωνες έφτασαν στην 

Αίγυπτο, σκέφτηκαν ότι οι έως τότε 

αποκαλούμενοι champsai, που 

κολυμπούσαν στο Νείλο, έμοιαζαν 

με τις σαύρες στη Μύκονο, κι έτσι 

τους αποκάλεσαν «κροκόδειλους». 

Ο Le Corbusier εξήρε ενθουσιωδώς την 

άσπιλη, «παρθενική» ομορφιά της Μυκόνου. 

Αλλά στην πραγματικότητα το χρώμα 

των λευκών κυβόσχημων σπιτιών της Χώρας, 

σήμα κατατεθέν για τη Μύκονο σήμερα, 

ήταν κίτρινο, ροζ ή μπλε μέχρι τη δεκαετία 

του 1930, όταν ο δικτάτορας Ιωάννης Μεταξάς 

αποφάσισε ότι όλες οι κυκλαδίτικες 

κατοικίες πρέπει να καλύπτονται με ασβέστη 

για λόγους υγιεινής. Η χολέρα μάστιζε τη 

χώρα και ο ασβέστης ήταν εκείνη την εποχή 

το πιο ισχυρό απολυμαντικό. Τα κάποτε 

πολύχρωμα σπίτια έγινα λευκά εν μιά νυκτί, 

κάτω από το άγρυπνο βλέμμα των ντόπιων 

χωροφυλάκων.

The first years Cavo Paradiso existed as an after hours party 

venue and first line-ups included the DEF MIX crew (Morales, 

Knuckles & Tomiie), Louie Vega plus many others from the US 

house scene. Word was spread over quickly within the dance 

music industry and Cavo was on its way on becoming the 

club it is today. 

Today Cavo Paradiso is characterized by probably one of the 

most intense summer schedules on the planet with back to 

back events, involving the biggest international djs on the

6Chora’s trademark maze like streets are dotted with designer 

stores, gourmet restaurants and lively bars; and getting 

lost in them is a favorite pastime. Yet did you know 

that they owe their distinctive labyrinth form to Mykonos’ 

pirate days? Back in the 1700’s the island was plagued 

by ferocious buccaneers’ raids. So the locals constructed 

these winding lanes in order to confuse invaders, and to 

detain them from finding their way into the heart of town 

or back out. 

Τα σοκάκια της Μυκόνου, με τη χαρακτηριστική λαβυρινθώδη 

μορφή τους, είναι διάστικτα με καταστήματα σχεδιαστών, 

γκουρμέ εστιατόρια και κατάμεστα μπαρ – και το να χάνεσαι 

σ’ αυτά είναι αγαπημένο χόμπι. Γνώριζες όμως ότι αυτός 

ο λαβύρινθος αντλεί την καταγωγή του από τις πειρατικές 

εποχές της Μυκόνου; Πίσω στα 1700, το νησί μαστίζεται 

από τις βάρβαρες επιδρομές των πειρατών. Έτσι, οι ντόπιοι 

καταφεύγουν σ’ αυτή την ιδιότυπη αρχιτεκτονική ώστε να 

τους αποτρέψουν να εισχωρήσουν στα ενδότερα και να τους 

εμποδίσουν να βρουν το δρόμο τους στην επιστροφή. 

Speaking of piracy, 

whilst nowadays Little 

Venice is the idyllic, 

photogenic hotspot 

with the swankiest cafes, 

bars and clubs –including 

Semeli the Bar, 

Bao’s and Toy Room–, 

a few centuries ago it was called Alefkandra and it was 

home to the richest merchants and ship captains. Yet as 

soon as this privileged neighborhood was developed back 

in the 16th and 17th centuries, piracy started to become 

quite widespread. These colorful waterfront captains’ residences 

with overhanging balconies, also had little basement 

doors and underground storage areas with direct 

access to the sea. Legend has it that these openings were 

used for the quick loading and unloading of goods; and 

that the residents were really undercover pirates and their 

homes, their secret hideouts. One such pirate was the 

infamous George Baos, who played a leading part in the 

1770-1774 Orlov revolution and who was granted for his 

services the little island in front of the port. This bears his 

name ever since; whilst in more recent years one of the 

island’s most legendary bars was also to be christened in 

honor of the mythical pirate Baos.

η Μικρή Βενετία είναι το 

ειδυλλιακό και φωτογενές σημείο 

με τα διασημότερα καφέ, μπαρ και

το Bao’s και το Toy Room–, πριν από μερικούς αιώνες ονομαζόταν 

Αλεφκάντρα και ήταν το λημέρι των πλουσιότερων 

εμπόρων και πλοιάρχων. Όταν αυτή η προνομιακή γειτονιά 

αναπτύχθηκε τον 16ο και 17ο αιώνα, η πειρατεία άρχισε 

να διαδίδεται. Οι πολύχρωμες κατοικίες των καπετάνιων με 

τα προεξέχοντα μπαλκόνια είχαν επίσης μικρές πόρτες και 

υπόγειους αποθηκευτικούς χώρους με άμεση πρόσβαση στη 

θάλασσα. Ο θρύλος λέει ότι αυτά τα ανοίγματα χρησιμοποιούνταν 

για τη γρήγορη φόρτωση και εκφόρτωση αγαθών· 

και ότι οι κάτοικοι ήταν στην πραγματικότητα μυστικοί πειρατές 

και τα σπίτια τους τα κρησφύγετά τους. Ένας τέτοιος 

πειρατής ήταν ο περίφημος Γεώργιος Μπάος, ο οποίος 

έπαιξε ηγετικό ρόλο στην επανάσταση του Ορλόφ στα 1770- 

1774. Για τις υπηρεσίες του πήρε ως δώρο το μικρό νησί 

μπροστά στο λιμάνι. Αυτό φέρει το όνομά του από τότε, 

ενώ τα τελευταία χρόνια ένα από τα πιο θρυλικά μπαρ του 

νησιού βαφτίστηκε, επίσης προς τιμήν του, Bao’s.

Mykonos wasn’t always the jetsetting tourist Μecca that 

it is today. In fact its tale is one of rags to riches and 

vice versa, many times over. There is however a recurrent 

theme over the aeons. During the hot, scorching summers 

of 250 BC or so, when the sacred 

island of Delos was the leading 

commercial center of antiquity, 

Delians used to send their wives 

and children to neighboring Mykonos. 

Not unlike what the wealthy 

Athenians currently do for their 

spouses and offspring. Albeit back 

then, rather than for holiday purposes, 

this commute took place 

for an altogether other reason: 

namely to protect the frailest members of the family from 

the incongruous advances of the thousands of rampant 

sailors and traders passing through Delos and looking for 

a bit of «fun» on the side.

των καυτών καλοκαιριών του 

250 π.Χ. περίπου, όταν το ιερό νησί 

της Δήλου ήταν το κορυφαίο εμπορικό 

κέντρο της αρχαιότητας, οι Δήλιοι 

έστελναν τις συζύγους και τα παιδιά 

τους στη γειτονική Μύκονο – όχι 

πολύ διαφορετικά δηλαδή από ό,τι 

κάνουν σήμερα οι εύποροι Αθηναίοι 

για τους δικούς τους. Ωστόσο αντί 

για διακοπές, η συγκεκριμένη μετακίνηση 

γινόταν για έναν διαφορετικό 

λόγο: την προστασία των πιο ευπαθών μελών της οικογένειας 

από τις επελάσεις των χιλιάδων αχαλίνωτων ναυτικών και 

εμπόρων, που, διασχίζοντας τη Δήλο, αναζητούσαν και λίγη 

παράπλευρη «διασκέδαση».

Coined as the «new Ibiza», Mykonos is currently in its 

heyday. But it has known poverty, pain and destruction, 

in the not so distant past. Despite what happens next, 

thousand years. Because this is their nature. Their old adage 

says it all: «Our rocky island is not made up of its 

people; our people are made up of its rock».

In the movies this is Frodo Baggins: the shy young Hobbitt 

of Tolkien’s masterpiece, who goes through hell and high 

water to accomplish his goal; and with his feats sweeps 

the Oscars. In real life this role belongs to athlete Lefteris 

Petrounias: a non fictional, albeit as much heroic as his 

cinematic counterpart character, who stops at nothing – 

not even a substantial injury– in order to accomplish his 

goal. Which is no other than reaching the absolute top. 

With a gold medal in Olympic Games, three in International 

Championships, one in a World Cup, four in European 

Championships and one more in Paneuropean Games, 

Petrounias, the athlete who has given his name in a gymnastics 

exercise, relentlessly continues his winning streak 

which commenced in 2015. 

Having forgotten for more than four years what it 

means to be second, Petrounias, at the end of 2018 secured 

his latest gold in the International Championship at 

Doha: not an inconsiderable feat especially taking into account 

that he had a difficult and painful surgery pending. 

An act of will as much as a display of skill, this victory was 

dedicated to the Greek fans, who played a considerable 

role with their enthusiastic support. 

Nowadays Petrounias, who is recovering from his operation, 

has set his sights upon the Olympics in Tokyo in 

2020. 

Amidst a demanding program –which he makes sure 

to balance with some of the pleasures of life– the 28 year 

old gymnastics super star talks about his love of travel and 

Mykonos island.

ζωή, ο αντίστοιχος ήρωας –καθόλου φανταστικός, αλλά 

τόσο «μυθικός» όσο και ο κινηματογραφικός– είναι ο Λευτέρης 

Πετρούνιας, που επίσης δεν πτοείται με τίποτα –ούτε 

καν από ένα σοβαρό τραυματισμό– προκειμένου να φτάσει 

στο στόχο του: δηλαδή την κορυφή. 

Με ένα χρυσό μετάλλιο σε Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες, τρία 

σε Παγκόσμια Πρωταθλήματα, ένα σε Παγκόσμιο Κύπελλο, 

τέσσερα σε Ευρωπαϊκά Πρωταθλήματα και άλλο ένα σε 

Ευρωπαϊκούς Αγώνες, ο αθλητής, που μάλιστα έχει δώσει το 

όνομά του σε άσκηση των κρίκων, συνεχίζει ακάθεκτος το 

θρυλικό σερί που έχει ξεκινήσει από το 2015. 

Έχοντας ξεχάσει για πάνω από τέσσερα χρόνια τι θα πει 

δεύτερη θέση, ο Πετρούνιας, στο τέλος του 2018 απέσπασε 

την τελευταία του χρυσή διάκριση στο Παγκόσμιο Πρωτάθλημα 

στην Ντόχα, ξεπερνώντας εαυτόν, με ένα δύσκολο 

και επίπονο χειρουργείο να εκκρεμεί. Άσκηση θάρρους, 

τόσο όσο και επίδειξη δεξιότητας, αφιέρωσε αυτή τη νίκη 

του στο ελληνικό κοινό, το οποίο με τη στήριξή του έπαιξε 

καθοριστικό ρόλο. 

Σήμερα, σε διαδικασία αποκατάστασης από τον τραυματισμό 

του, ο Πετρούνιας έχει βάλει στόχο τους Ολυμπιακούς 

του 2020 στο Τόκιο. Εν μέσω εντατικού προγράμματος –το 

οποίο ωστόσο φροντίζει να εξισορροπεί με κάποιες από τις 

απολαύσεις της ζωής– ο 28χρονος σούπερ σταρ της ενόργανης 

μιλάει για την αγάπη του για τα ταξίδια και τη Μύκονο.

You have rightfully won the title of «The Lord of the 

Rings». You’ve reached the top. What prompts you to 

continue? 

What makes me want to continue in the same rhythm 

is above all my great love for what I do, but also the 

support and recognition I receive from the public. My first 

and foremost concern is my successful recovery after the 

operation; after that the first major athletic goal is the 

International Championship in Stuttgart in October. This 

will qualify me for the Olympics of Tokyo 2020, which is 

the ultimate goal of these last four years. Following that, 

I just wish I am healthy enough so as to continue on the 

same course until 2024. 

What made you choose gymnastics? 

Growing up, my first idol was Dimosthenis Tambakos. 

But it was my parents who made the start, enrolling me 

at the age of 5 in the gymnast department of Panionios 

team. I was a rather spirited child, and all these equipment 

in the gym –the trampoline, the mattresses, the 

parallel bars– looked like a giant, very inviting playground.

Είσαι στην κορυφή. Τι σε κάνει να συνεχίζεις; 

Αυτό που με κάνει να θέλω να συνεχίζω στον ίδιο ρυθμό 

είναι πάνω απ’ όλα η αγάπη μου γι’ αυτό που κάνω, αλλά και 

η στήριξη και η αναγνώριση των κόπων μου από τον κόσμο. 

Μεριμνώντας πρωτίστως για τη σωστή αποκατάσταση του 

χειρουργείου στον ώμο μου, ο πρώτος μεγάλος στόχος είναι 

το Παγκόσμιο Πρωτάθλημα στη Στουτγκάρδη τον Οκτώβριο. 

Αυτό μου εξασφαλίζει και την πρόκριση για τους Ολυμπιακούς 

Αγώνες του Τόκιο 2020, που είναι και ο τελικός 

στόχος της τετραετίας. Από κει και πέρα, υγεία να υπάρχει, 

και μπορεί να συνεχιστεί αυτή η πορεία και ως το 2024. 

Τι ήταν αυτό που σ’ έκανε ν’ ασχοληθείς με τους κρίκους; 

Το πρώτο μου είδωλο ήταν ο Δημοσθένης Ταμπάκος. 

Αλλά η αρχή έγινε από τους γονείς μου, που με πήγαν σε 

ηλικία 5 ετών στην ενόργανη στον Πανιώνιο. Ήμουν ένα ζωηρό 

παιδί και όλα αυτά μέσα στο γυμναστήριο –το τραμπολίνο, 

το δίζυγο, τα στρώματα– τα είδα τότε σαν ένα μεγάλο 

παιδότοπο, σαν μια τεράστια παιδική χαρά.

Professional sports –especially at your level– demand 

a lot of sacrifices. How do you compensate? 

When one is involved in professional sport, they have to 

make sacrifices and deprive themselves from many things 

in childhood, in puberty and in adulthood. Personally I’ve 

reached this level, where living like that is my choice. Yet 

the experiences that I am gaining through my profession 

justify my choice. 

Travelling a lot means that I get to meet new cultures 

and make friendships with athletes from all over the 

world. This is truly magical. I do hope that when I retire, 

I’ll still have the opportunity to travel often, as this has 

become embedded in my lifestyle. 

Having said that, at the age of 28, I’ve learned the importance 

of measure, and I therefore enjoy a pretty good 

life in Athens. 

Greece or abroad? Mountain or sea? Traditional village 

or contemporary city? 

Certainly Greece. Though I do love travelling abroad, I 

am used to saying that the more I travel throughout the 

country, the more enamored I become. I like the mountain, 

but the sea beguiles me. And I believe that traditional 

settlements in Greece are unique and very special. 

Ο πρωταθλητισμός –και δη στο δικό σου επίπεδο– απαιτεί 

θυσίες, πίεση και στερήσεις. Πώς τις αντισταθμίζεις; 

Πάντοτε όταν κάποιος ασχολείται με τον πρωταθλητισμό 

θα χρειαστεί να κάνει θυσίες και να στερηθεί πολλά σε όλες τις 

ηλικίες. Στην παιδική, την εφηβική, αλλά και ως ενήλικας. Έχω 

φτάσει πια σ’ ένα σημείο που ό,τι στερούμαι είναι από δική μου 

επιλογή. 

Όμως πιστεύω πως με δικαιώνουν οι εμπειρίες που αποκτώ 

ταξιδεύοντας τόσο πολύ: γνωρίζοντας διαφορετικούς πολιτισμούς 

και κάνοντας φιλίες με αθλητές απ’ όλο τον κόσμο. Τα 

ταξίδια είναι πάντα κάτι μαγικό. 

Κι ελπίζω όταν αποσυρθώ από την ενεργό δράση να έχω τη 

δυνατότητα να ταξιδεύω συχνά, γιατί έχει γίνει τρόπος ζωής για 

μένα.. Βεβαίως, στην ηλικία των 28, έχω μάθει τη σημασία τού 

«παν μέτρον άριστον», και γι’ αυτό ζω πολύ καλά τη ζωή μου 

και στην Αθήνα. 

Ελλάδα ή εξωτερικό; Βουνό ή θάλασσα; Παραδοσιακός 

οικισμός ή σύγχρονη πόλη; 

Σίγουρα Ελλάδα. Παρότι μου αρέσουν τα ταξίδια στο 

εξωτερικό, αυτό που συνηθίζω να λέω είναι ότι όσο πιο πολύ 

ταξιδεύω ανά την επικράτεια τόσο περισσότερο αγαπώ τη 

χώρα μας. Μου αρέσει το βουνό, αλλά η αδυναμία μου είναι 

η θάλασσα. Θεωρώ πως οι παραδοσιακοί οικισμοί στην Ελλάδα 

είναι πολύ ξεχωριστοί και ιδιαίτεροι.

What is your ideal destination? 

The Cyclades. For they combine the allure of tradition 

with the endless white and blue and the crystal clear seas. 

The wild beauty and the hospitable inhabitants of the 

islands, as well as their glory and mystique, make for an 

unbeatable mix which is simply mesmerizing. 

Like Mykonos? 

I recently stayed at the whitewashed, supremely beautiful 

Mykonos town, at the Semeli, and had a truly amazing 

time. Mykonos inimitably amalgamates tradition with 

elegance and glamor, and this hotel is a characteristic example. 

I can’t wait to find myself again at the Semeli’s star 

studded pool. 

To once more taste the delectable dishes of Krama 

restaurant; and to get lost in the maze like streets of Chora, 

which is just a couple of minutes away on foot… 

Ποιος είναι ο ιδανικός προορισμός για εσένα και γιατί; 

Οι Κυκλάδες είναι ο αγαπημένος μου προορισμός, καθώς 

συνδυάζουν τη γοητεία της παράδοσης με το απέραντο 

λευκό και μπλε, και τα πανέμορφα νερά. Η άγρια ομορφιά 

και οι φιλόξενοι άνθρωποι των νησιών, αλλά και η αίγλη που 

αποπνέουν, είναι αχτύπητος συνδυασμός που με μαγνητίζει. 

Όπως η Μύκονος; 

Πρόσφατα έμεινα στην κατάλευκη, κουκλίστικη Χώρα της 

Μυκόνου, στο Semeli, και πραγματικά πέρασα πολύ όμορφα. 

Η Μύκονος συνδυάζει απαράμιλλα την παράδοση με την κομψότητα 

και την πολυτέλεια, κι αυτό το ξενοδοχείο είναι χαρακτηριστικό 

παράδειγμα. Ανυπομονώ να βρεθώ ξανά στην 

πισίνα με τα αστέρια του Semeli. Να ξαναδοκιμάσω τις εξαιρετικές 

γεύσεις στο εστιατόριο Krama και να χαθώ στα σοκάκια 

της Χώρας, που είναι μόλις λίγα λεπτά με τα πόδια μακριά…

Frank: Man, I really dig being back to Mykonos again! I 

don’t know, this place is just one of a kind in the planet. 

And trust me, I’ve been everywhere: London, Dubai, Istanbul, 

Sao Paulo… And Athens of course, which really rocks. 

But still there is no place like Mykonos in the whole wide 

world. It’s the air, the sun, the sea, the scenery. Perhaps, 

above all its energy. Here I feel more alive than ever. 

F.P.: It’s so true, Frank! We also have these amazingly 

glamorous facilities and services – in fact rare 

throughout the world. Combine them with the island’s 

unique vibes and beauty, and we have a magical, 

potent mix. 

Frank: Yep! They have even named us «New Ibiza». 

Which was for good, but still I think it doesn’t do us 

justice. 

F.P.: Nothing to do. Mykonos vibe is wholly different from 

that of Ibiza.

φυσικά, που τα σπάει, εννοείται. Αλλά σαν τη Μύκονο 

δεν υπάρχει πουθενά στον πλανήτη. Είναι ο αέρας, ο 

ήλιος, οι θάλασσες, το τοπίο… Η ενέργεια ίσως, πάνω 

απ’ όλα, που με κάνουν να νιώθω πιο ζωντανός από 

ποτέ.

glamorous παροχές, σπάνιες στον κόσμο. Σε συνδυασμό

Frank: They have these enormous, massive clubs there; 

whereas in Mykonos everything is more cozy and intimate. 

Lovey dovey, even. 

F.P.: A bona fide playboy like you should know! What’s 

more, the Ibizan has nothing to do with the Mykonian 

landscape. Ibiza lacks the traditional and quaint. The 

white and the blue; the Aegean’s translucent light, the 

maze like streets of Chora, the red domed churches, the 

whitewashed, sugar cube houses… 

Frank: Oh yes! Mykonos Chora is almost outworldly. So 

OK, I do enjoy a good party on one of the island’s 

beaches. But they lack this special something –this «je 

ne sais quoi»– that you may only find here, at Little 

Venice. 

F.P.: I guess it is all the accumulated energy that has infiltrated 

the place, after so many decades of partying, 

against the backdrop of the waves crushing in the old 

captainσ’ homes! 

Frank: The party nowadays goes on, uninterrupted, bigger 

and better, at the Semeli, Bao’s and Toy Room. Every day, 

every night, from dusk to dawn. And the crowd just loves 

it. You can see them with huge smiles plastered on their 

faces. As the man responsible for these fine establishments, 

you must be doing something right! How do you 

do it, my friend? 

F.P.: It all has to do with the way we work in Mykonos. 

There is a lot of freedom and spontaneity. Nothing is 

fixed, stylized or preordained. Every day and every night 

brings about something new. Thanks to our staff, djs and 

overall environment, there is no stagnation or boredom. 

Φρανκ: Εκεί έχει αχανή κλαμπ, στη Μύκονο είναι τα πάντα 

πιο cozy και παρεΐστικα. Αγαπησιάρικα θα έλεγα… 

Φ.Π.: Εσύ ειδικά, μέγας playboy, κάτι ξέρεις! Άσε που στην 

Ίμπιζα καμία σχέση δεν έχει και το τοπίο. Δεν έχει το γαλανόλευκο, 

το παραδοσιακό, το γραφικό. Το φως του Αιγαίου, 

τους πλακόστρωτους λαβύρινθους στη Χώρα, τις εκκλησιές 

με τους κόκκινους τρούλους και τα κατάλευκα σπιτάκια… 

Φρανκ: Ε, ναι. Η Χώρα της Μυκόνου δεν υπάρχει. Γι’ αυτό, 

καλά είναι και τα πάρτι στις παραλίες. Αλλά δεν έχουν αυτό 

το «κάτι» που μόνο εδώ, στη Μικρή Βενετία, βρίσκεις. 

Φ.Π.: Είναι μάλλον η ενέργεια που έχει συσσωρευτεί και 

εμποτίσει το μέρος, εδώ και δεκαετίες παρταρίσματος, με 

φόντο τα κύματα, στα παλιά σπίτια των καπετάνιων! 

Φρανκ: Και τώρα το πάρτι συνεχίζεται ακάθεκτο στο Semeli, 

το Bao’s και το Toy Room, κάθε μέρα, από το σούρουπο ως 

το ξημέρωμα. Ο κόσμος γουστάρει. Τους βλέπεις είναι όλοι 

μ’ ένα χαμόγελο ως τ’ αυτιά. Ως υπεύθυνος των μαγαζιών, 

κάτι κάνεις για όλο αυτό! Πώς τα καταφέρνεις, my friend; 

Φ.Π.: Έχει να κάνει με τον τρόπο που δουλεύουμε στη Μύκονο. 

Υπάρχει μεγάλη ελευθερία και αυθορμητισμός. Τίποτα 

δεν είναι στημένο ή προσχεδιασμένο. Κάθε βράδυ γίνεται 

και κάτι καινούργιο. Χάρη στο προσωπικό, τους dj και το 

όλο περιβάλλον, δεν υπάρχει στασιμότητα ή βαρεμάρα. Η 

Μύκονος είναι σαν το φοίνικα που αναγεννιέται από τις στάχτες 

του. Κάθε μέρα είναι ξεχωριστή, βγαίνουν άλλα συναισθήματα, 

κι έτσι διαφοροποιείται το όλο σκηνικό και το 

mood. 

Φρανκ: Οπότε δεν βαριόμαστε ποτέ και είμαστε πάντα 

στα… κάγκελα. Είτε πας στο Semeli, είτε στο Bao’s είτε

Mykonos is like a phoenix, burning and rising from its ashes. 

Every day is just unique; with a different set of feelings, 

sentiments and moods. 

Frank: So we are never bored –or boring– but always up. 

Whether you are at the Semeli, Bao’s or Toy Room, the 

vibe is unfalteringly uplifting. Personally, I like to start incognito 

with a brunch at the Semeli; and then have a couple 

of sundowners – this is after all Little Venice’s premier 

sunset spot. Without doubt at some point I shall head 

over to Bao’s; which is the island’s most historic place; 

going even stronger in its new incarnation. I just love the 

dj – a real crowd pleaser. He has a great intuition, he can 

actually sense what people want, so one moment you 

sexily move to the sounds of latin, and the next create 

havoc with Greek songs; then go headbanging with rock 

tunes or flirt with ambient… Granted, everything is pioneering 

and fresh though! 

F.P.: And you’ll of course end up at Toy. Where you reveal 

yourself and cause mayhem… 

Frank: Oh yes! I shall not miss that. It is my Toy Room! I just 

go crazy with the girls dancing to sensual hip hop and RNB 

tunes. They are the hottest, prettiest, most chic and best 

dressed in the island. I adore teasing them, having them sitting 

on my lap and taking selfies. But they love it too. And so

κάνω βέβαια και ένα πέρασμα, ωρών συνήθως, από το Bao’s. 

Είναι το ιστορικότερο μαγαζί του νησιού και συνεχίζει ακόμα 

καλύτερο στη νέα του εποχή. Τα σπάει ο dj, που κάθε μέρα 

«πιάνει» τι θέλει ο κόσμος. Τη μια κουνιέσαι με λάτιν, την 

άλλη τα σπας με ελληνικά. Χορεύεις με ροκ και φλερτάρεις 

με ambient… Μόνο καινούργια πράγματα όμως! 

Φ.Π.: Και φυσικά καταλήγεις κάθε βράδυ στο Toy. Όπου 

αποκαλύπτεσαι και δίνεις ρέστα… 

Φρανκ: Ε, ναι, δεν το χάνω! Είναι το δωμάτιο των παιχνιδιών 

μου! Τρελαίνομαι με τα κορίτσια που λικνίζονται με τα σέξι 

hip hop και τα RNB. Είναι πάντα τα ομορφότερα, τα πιο σικ, 

τα πιο καλοντυμένα. Αγαπώ να τα πειράζω, να τα βάζω να 

κάθονται στην αγκαλιά μου και να βγαίνω μαζί τους σέλφι. 

Κι αυτές γουστάρουν όμως! Αλλά και τ’ αγόρια. Γενικά γινό-

There is a lot of game going on and massive fun to be had! 

F.P.: Haha, indeed! Do you remember this incredible guy 

who wanted to douche the whole Little Venice’s square 

with champagne, to get the girl’s attention? 

Frank: And that he did. Respect! 

F.P.: This whole champagne play, I do like. It happens a lot 

at the Semeli, also. When action intensifies and girls climb 

up on the bar to start dancing. 

Frank: A sight for sore eyes! What’s more, other gals 

passing outside see them, get jealous, and decide to 

come inside and follow on their footsteps. And before 

you know it, there is a whole impromptu dancing contest 

going on! 

F.P.: This is exactly what I was talking about. Every day 

and every night brings about something completely novel 

and unexpected. This is what makes Mykonos… well, 

Mykonos! 

Frank: All this talk, whetted my appetite for a heavy dose 

of partying. Shall we head to the Toy Room; 

F.P.: Goes without saying…

Φ.Π.: Ωραία φάση γενικά με τις σαμπάνιες. Παίζουν πολύ 

και στο Semeli, όταν ανάβουν τα αίματα και τα κορίτσια 

ανεβαίνουν να χορέψουν πάνω στην μπάρα. 

Φρανκ: Τρελό αξιοθέατο! Τις βλέπουν και μπαίνουν στο παιχνίδι 

και άλλες κοπέλες που περνούν απέξω και στήνεται 

ολόκληρος αυτοσχέδιος διαγωνισμός. 

Φ.Π.: Αυτό ακριβώς είναι που σου έλεγα. Κάθε μέρα γίνεται 

κάτι διαφορετικό και τελείως απρόσμενο. Αυτό είναι το αξεπέραστο 

και το μοναδικό της Μυκόνου. 

Φρανκ: Νομίζω ήρθε η ώρα να παρτάρουμε κι εμείς.

What springs to mind when you first think 

about Mykonos? It is most likely the 24/7 

parties, celebrity shenanigans and whole 

crazy nightlife scene. Yet the Island of the Winds also has 

another distinctively more atmospheric, superbly romantic

NEON is proud to present SIGHT an unprecedented 

site-specific exhibition by British artist Antony 

Gormley, in collaboration with the Ephorate of Antiquities 

of Cyclades, on the archaeological site and the Museum 

of Delos Island. 

This project by the renowned sculptor marks the first 

time that an artist takes over the archaeological site of 

Delos since the island was inhabited over 5,000 years ago. 

Gormley (b.1950) is one of the most renowned artists 

of our time. During the past 40 years, his sculptures 

and installations have challenged our perception of 

space and the human body. As an undergraduate at 

Trinity College, University of Cambridge, Gormley studied 

archaeology, anthropology and art history, equipping him 

with a deep understanding of the diversity of human 

cultures and their origins. 

In this installation on Delos, Gormley repopulates the 

island with iron ’bodyforms’, restoring a human presence 

and creating a journey of potential encounters. He has 

installed 29 sculptures made during the last twenty 

years, including 5 specially commissioned new works, 

both at the periphery and integrated amongst Delos’s 

archaeological sites.

αντίληψή μας για τον χώρο και το ανθρώπινο σώμα. Οι 

σπουδές του στην αρχαιολογία, την ανθρωπολογία και την 

ιστορία της τέχνης στο Trinity College του Cambridge τον 

εφοδίασαν με μια βαθιά κατανόηση της ποικιλίας της ανθρώπινης 

φύσης και της καταγωγής της. 

Έως τις 31 Οκτωβρίου 2019, οι 29 ανθρωπόμορφες γλυπτικές 

εγκαταστάσεις του θα «επαναποικίσουν» το νησί 

της Δήλου μετά από χιλιάδες χρόνια, στο πλαίσιο της έκθεσης 

SIGHT. Μεταξύ των έργων περιλαμβάνονται και πέντε 

νέες αναθέσεις ειδικά για την έκθεση. 

Η Δήλος περιγράφεται στα ποιητικά κείμενα ως ένας 

πλάνητας βράχος που σταθεροποιήθηκε στην καρδιά του 

Αιγαίου με αδαμάντινους κίονες, όταν η Λητώ γέννησε 

εκεί δύο από τους σπουδαιότερους θεούς του ελληνικού 

πανθέου, τον Απόλλωνα και την Άρτεμη. Παρούσα από 

την πρωτοκυκλαδική 3η χιλιετία π.Χ., μέχρι τον πρώιμο 

Μεσαίωνα του 7ου αιώνα μ.Χ., υπήρξε κορυφαίο θρησκευτικό 

κέντρο και κομβικό εμπορικό λιμάνι στις θαλάσσιες 

οδούς της Μεσογείου. Μύθος, ιερότητα, πολιτική εξουσία, 

πλούτος, πολυπολιτισμικότητα, κοσμοπολιτισμός διαμόρφωσαν 

καθοριστικά το πολυκύμαντο παρελθόν της Δήλου 

που αποτυπώνεται υλικά στα αρχιτεκτονικά κατάλοιπα της 

νήσου, στα ιερά και τις οικίες της. 

Σήμερα, με εξαίρεση τους αρχαιολόγους που προστατεύουν 

και μελετούν το νησί, η Δήλος είναι ακατοίκητη. Τα 

ερείπιά της, όπως αυτά της Πομπηίας, στέκουν κενά από 

ανθρώπινη παρουσία. 

Ο επισκέπτης έρχεται σε επαφή με την έκθεση προτού 

ακόμα πατήσει το πόδι του στη στεριά. Προσεγγίζοντας 

τη Δήλο με το σκάφος, στην δύσβατη βορειοδυτική 

πλευρά, αντικρίζει μια μοναχική φιγούρα (από τη σειρά 

του Gormley Another Time, 1999-2013) που στέκεται 

φρουρός ανάμεσα στους σχηματισμούς των βράχων 

στην ακτή. Δύο ακόμα έργα της ίδιας σειράς -επίσης 

προσανατολισμένα προς τον μακρινό ορίζοντα- στέκουν 

στην κορυφή Πλάκες πάνω στο όρος Κύνθος και στην 

άκρη του εμπορικού λιμανιού. Άλλες γλυπτές φιγούρες

The works animate the geological and archaeological 

features of the island: a granite rock in the middle of 

the Cycladic Islands in the Aegean, with a past filled 

with myths, rituals, religions, politics, multiculturalism 

and trade. Its intertwined and contrasting identities, as 

both holy place and commercial town, combined with its 

topography and geographical location, made the island 

singular and cosmopolitan Hellenistic town. 

Mythology tells us its first name was «Άδηλος» (A-Delos), 

meaning ‘the non-visible’ - a floating rock with no fixed 

location. It became «Δήλος» (Delos), ‘the visible’, when 

Leto, Zeus’ mortal lover, gave birth to twins Apollo, god of 

light, and Artemis, goddess of the hunt. During 2500–2000 

BC and through ancient and classical times up to 69 BC, 

Delos was a vital commercial port on the Mediterranean 

routes. Today, with the exception of archaeologists 

safeguarding the island and those undertaking scientific 

research, Delos is uninhabited. Its ruins, like those at 

Pompeii, stand devoid of human presence. 

The first connection between visitors and the work 

is established before they even set foot on Delos. 

Approaching the rugged northwest coast, they catch sight 

of a lone figure (from Gormley’s series Another Time, 

1999–2013), standing sentinel on a rocky promontory 

at the water’s edge. Two more works from the same 

series – also looking towards the distant horizon – stand 

on Plakes Peak and on Mount Kynthos, and another 

similar work stands in the waters of the harbour. Further 

sculptures are integrated with archaeological sites across 

the island, from the Stadium to the Τheatre district and 

from the merchant stores to the Μuseum site. 

Gormley has studied the temples and the sacred 

enclosures, the horizon and the topography created by 

the wind and the salt. His sculptures, taking naturalistic, 

cubic and more abstracted forms, either stand or lie on 

the ground, exposed to the elements. Interacting with the 

island’s topography, the works appear and disappear. 

They activate the elemental character of the island and 

its human history, establishing a connection with our 

collective memory. Gormley respectfully engages the 

audience in an experience that does not compete with 

the space or its history, but rather, establishes a physical 

and intellectual connection with our collective memory.

απόλυτη αρμονία με τον χώρο. 

Ο Gormley έχει μελετήσει τους ναούς και τα ιερά άβατα, 

τον ορίζοντα, τη μορφολογία του εδάφους όπως μεταμορφώνεται 

από τον άνεμο και το αλάτι. Οι γλυπτές μορφές του, 

σε νατουραλιστικές, κυβοειδείς και πιο αφηρημένες φόρμες, 

είτε στέκουν ορθές είτε ξαπλωμένες στο έδαφος, είναι εκτεθειμένες 

στα στοιχεία της φύσης. Αλληλεπιδρώντας με τη 

μορφολογία του νησιού, τα έργα μοιάζουν να εμφανίζονται 

και να εξαφανίζονται ταυτόχρονα. Καθοδηγούν τη φαντασία 

του επισκέπτη και εστιάζουν την προσοχή στην ανθρώπινη 

παρουσία στη Δήλο στη διάρκεια των αιώνων, σε ένα ταξίδι 

μέσα από τη μυθολογία, το φως και το σκοτάδι, την ανθρώπινη 

διαδρομή μέσα από τη δόξα και την ήττα. Λειτουργώντας 

με σεβασμό, ο καλλιτέχνης εμπλέκει τον επισκέπτη 

σε μια εμπειρία που δεν «ανταγωνίζεται» τον χώρο και την 

ιστορία του, αλλά συμβάλλει σε μια φυσική και πνευματική 

σύνδεση της συλλογική μας μνήμη με το φορτισμένο ιστορικό 

τοπίο.

Super Paradise 

A notorious party beach, 6.5 km southeast of Chora, with 

an idyllic scenery with golden sand and turquoise waters, 

sun beds, showers and exemplary beach service. Here lies 

the namesake bar that made Plintri (the original name of 

the beach) known worldwide 

Paraga 

A favorite of the island’s younger crowd, the small organized 

beach of Paraga, 5 km from Chora, is also easily accessible by 

boat from Platis Gialos. Fine sand, blue waters and an amazing 

view of the ancient island of Delos and the rock in the middle of 

the sea, create a postcard perfect scenery. The famous Kalua 

and Scorpio beach bars complete the picture of good life. 

Super Paradise 

Η περιβόητη παραλία των πάρτυ βρίσκεται 6,5 χλμ. νοτιοανατολικά 

της Χώρας. Διαθέτει ένα ειδυλλιακό τοπίο με χρυσή άμμο και 

γαλαζοπράσινα νερά, ξαπλώστρες, ντους και υποδειγματικό σέρβις. 

Εδώ βρίσκεται το ομώνυμο beach bar που έκανε το Μπλιντρί 

(το επίσημο όνομα της παραλίας) παγκοσμίως γνωστό.

Αγαπημένη του πιο νεανικού κοινού, η μικρή οργανωμένη παραλία της Παράγκας, 

5 χλμ. από τη Χώρα, είναι επίσης εύκολα προσβάσιμη με πλοίο από 

τον Πλατύ Γιαλό. Η ωραία άμμος, τα καταγάλανα νερά και η εκπληκτική 

θέα στο νησί της Δήλου, καθώς και στο βράχο στη μέση της θάλασσας, δημιουργούν 

ένα εκπληκτικό τοπίο βγαλμένο από καρτ-ποστάλ. Τα περίφημα 

beach bars Kalua και Σκορπιός ολοκληρώνουν την εικόνα της καλής ζωής.

Kalo Livadi 

It is the opposing force of Psarou, the other playground 

of champagne sipping, Greek and foreign jetsetters, 9 

km south of Chora. A sandy beach, surrounded by the

Agios Sostis 

An enchanting, fashionably alternative beach (a small 

cove in effect), 6 km north of Chora.It used to be a nudist’s 

haunt and remains unorganised, with no umbrellas, 

sun beds or beach bars. There is Kiki’s taverna, however, 

which is a Mykonos “must”. Get fortified with patience, 

though, as you’re (most probably) in a long wait. 

Άγιος Σώστης 

Μια μαγευτική, εναλλακτικά σοφιστικέ παραλία 6 χλμ. βόρεια 

της Χώρας. Παλαιότερα υπήρξε παραλία γυμνιστών και παραμένει 

ανοργάνωτη , χωρίς ομπρέλες, ξαπλώστρες ή beach 

bars. Υπάρχει όμως η ταβέρνα Kiki, η οποία είναι το απόλυτο 

must της Μυκόνου. Οπλίσου με υπομονή, καθώς, λογικά, θα 

περιμένεις αρκετή ώρα για να αδειάσει τραπέζι.

Fokos/ Mirsini 

12 km north of Chora, they are two untouched, serene 

beaches with deep emerald green waters and thick sand. 

Umbrellas and sunbeds are out of the question so you will 

need to bring your own. Fokos has a small, family taverna, 

but if you opt for Mirsini remember to carry some water 

and snacks with you. Mirsini is also nudist friendly. 

Merchia 

On the northern side, 8 km away from Ano Mera, it is a 

tiny, serene, beautiful, pebbly beach, ideal for those looking 

for some peace and quiet. Bring water and supplies 

along and be prepared for driving on a dirt road. 

Φωκός/ Μυρσίνη 

12 χλμ βόρεια της Χώρας βρίσκονται δύο ανέγγιχτες, γαλήνιες παραλίες 

με βαθιά σμαραγδένια πράσινα νερά και παχιά άμμο. Ούτε λόγος φυσικά 

για ομπρέλες και ξαπλώστρες, έτσι θα πρέπει να προετοιμαστείς 

ανάλογα. Ο Φωκός διαθέτει μια μικρή, οικογενειακή ταβέρνα, αλλά αν 

επιλέξεις την Μυρσίνη θυμήσου να έχεις μαζί σου λίγο νερό και κάτι 

φαγώσιμο. Η Μυρσίνη είναι επίσης φιλική προς τους γυμνιστές. 

Μερχιά 

Στα βόρεια, 8 χλμ. από την Άνω Μερά, βρίσκεται μια μικρή, γαλήνια, 

πανέμορφη παραλία με βότσαλα, ιδανική για όσους ψάχνουν 

για ήσυχη και γαλήνια ατμόσφαιρα. Φέρε μαζί σου νερό και προμήθειες 

και προετοιμάσου για οδήγηση σε χωματόδρομο.
