Notes to the conductor • It is recommended, though not required, that you prioritize treble instruments on the first and second parts and bass instruments on the third part. • There are a number of notes in the horn parts that do not match the other instruments of the same part. These changes are intentional and were made to avoid extending the range higher than written C5. Small noteheads show the original pitch and may be played by more advanced horn players. • The Anvil may be replaced with a found percussion instrument, as long as it is a brightly clanging metallic object. It should sound similar to a railroad crossing bell. Ghost Town Triptych All Aboard the Hoodlebug may be performed by itself, or may be performed as part of a set of three pieces, each inspired by a part of the historic area of Pennsylvania’s Blacklick Valley. All three movements are available from Murphy Music Press as part of the Beginning Band Adaptable Series. If performed as a set, here is a suggested ordering: 1. All Aboard the Hoodlebug 2. Buena Vista Furnace About the composer Roger Zare has been praised for his “enviable grasp of orchestration” and for writing music with “formal clarity and an alluringly mercurial surface.” He was born in Sarasota, FL, and has written for a wide variety of ensembles, from solo instruments to full orchestra. Often inspired by science, mathematics, literature, and mythology, his colorfully descriptive and energetic works have been performed on five continents. Zare’s works for concert band and string orchestra are published by FJH Music, Manhattan Beach Music, Murphy Music Press, Theodore Presser Inc., and Roger Zare Music.
