GIRGARRE COMMUNITY NEWS
Jigarre Jammin’ April 2023 Camp Report
MUSICAL ENTHUSIASM - AND A WARM CAMP-FIRE SUCCESS FOR JIGARRE JAMMIN’S CAMP.
Plenty of music, enthusiasm and a
warm camp-fire made for another
huge and fun-filled Jigarre Jammin’
camp weekend in April. So much
good music and camaraderie flowed
around the park behind the Girgarre
hall from Tuesday on. Thirty-four
tents and vans of all shapes and sizes
and fifty-six people built a mini,
Jigarre Jammin’ town in no time at
all. Some were musicians, some
happy to just be!
There were so many generous
contributions of joy, companionship
and music. It was heart-warming to
be part of it. A huge thanks to Greg
Fitzpatrick for building the oh-so
popular fire pit. It became the hub for the campers each evening, creating a lovely, musical family atmosphere. It
was one of the many highlights of the weekend.
Some visitors were from Qld, and others were travelling through
and insisted on paying fees so they could join in the action. The program
began with a relaxed, open mic on Friday afternoon and another in the
evening...one of our best Friday night walk ups to date. The musicians
stepping up are becoming more confident and proficient each camp
weekend.
The ‘Five Minutes of Fame’ bands were as popular as ever. Names
are thrown into the hat, then
randomly sorted into groups of
4 or 5. The groups find a corner
and rehearse a song which is
later performed at the Saturday
evening concert. The quirky
names each band finds for
themselves create much mirth,
along with the sometimes
serious, but more often, fun
renditions of popular and novelty
songs. It was amazing to
see so much confidence,
inclusiveness and laughter in
each of the groups.
GIRGARRE COMMUNITY NEWS
The Saturday morning singing workshop
with Glenda Bancell, a singing
teacher from Rochester, was a treat.
Two songs in harmony were perfected
in an hour and a half, followed by a
masterful attempt at presenting them
at the evening concert! A typical Jigarre
Jam session brought the afternoon to a
close.
This year, we welcomed back
some familiar faces from years past for
the concert. Bands, including
Kyvalley’s, ‘Pure Drop’, soloist, Claire
Roberts from Stanhope and the beautiful
harmonies of Melbourne group, ‘Stuck in C’ were a pleasure to hear. Lockington’s blues rock band,
‘The Healers’, soon flushed out a few rockin’ and rollin’ dancers from the crowd to end the evening.
The local church goers joined the campers for a rousing, old-time gospel singalong on Sunday morning, followed
by a cuppa. Then, on a whim, it was decided, with very short notice, to provide some music in the Soundshell,
inviting some of the singers from the camp to perform. Fifty gathered and enjoyed a lazy, Sunday afternoon
followed by coffee in the cafe.
Joel and Leon's cafe was an enjoyable addition to the weekend. Breakfasts, coffees, cakes and pizzas were
in demand, keeping them both busy, and of course, they offer the best service found anywhere. The feedback on
the weekend’s activities from the visitors and campers was
whole-hearted
and genuine.
It was one of
our most successful
camp
weekends to
date. Di Burgmann
GIRGARRE TENNIS CLUB
GIRGARRE RSL SUB BRANCH
We have wrapped up another fairly successful
season of tennis. We had good numbers in juniors
and seniors, and every section was represented
in the finals series.
Well done to the section 2 team (pictured) that
made it through to the Grand Final. Unfortunately
they lost in a very close game to Ky
Lawn.
We look forward to welcoming everyone back
next season, and welcome any newcomers to
our club as well.
An Anzac Golf Bowls Tournament with proceeds in aid of Girgarre RSL
Sub Branch was held at Valley View Golf and Bowls Club with the bowls
winners originating from the Tatura Bowls Club. Young gun Seth Tziros
skipped his team of Col Johnson and Ken Cornell and they joyfully took
home the wonderful prizes from the Girgarre RSL sponsors and
particularly the generous supply of Fonterra dairy products.

DIAMOND POEMS
Kyabram Town Hall Writers’ Group enjoyed a fun-time writing exercise recently. A little challenge if your grammar is
a bit rusty – but not impossible. We did it so you can do it, too. Below are some of our results, followed by some simple instructions
to compose your own. Diamond (or diamante) poems have acquired their name from the finished shape the words
make on the page when centred. Why not have a go?
Write your own diamond poem. Instructions:
1. Diamond poems have seven lines and are centred in their space.
2. The first and last lines have just one word each which are nouns or naming words
(e.g. person, place, animal, thing, event, idea) that are somehow connected, e.g., they
are opposite (night, day), similar but separate (shells, beach), or one leads to the other
(egg, chicken).
3. The second and sixth lines have two words, which are adjectives – describing
words that tell us about the noun next to them (e.g. the colour, size, shape, texture
or other attribute).
4. The third and fifth lines have three words which are verbs – action words that tell
us what the nouns near them (first and last lines) can do (e.g. jump, shine, gobble,
shriek, smooch, etc.).
5. The fourth line has four words – nouns again, related to both the top noun and
the bottom noun, sometimes in transition mode.
Although the scoreboard for our seniors may not have looked particularly
pretty so far, there are many positives to take. Our first three games have
been against definite top 6 sides, and with a young side which includes 13
or more new faces, this year is focused on building towards a more successful
future. We have a fantastic committed group, which contributes to great
numbers training each week, followed by fantastic numbers joining in on
the Thursday night meals, with 120-140 meals served each night, the last
few weeks.
Our thirds have recently had an exciting win against Stanhope. We were outnumbered but definitely not outclassed.
Our young lads are proving they have some real skill and enthusiasm. We are still looking for another few
boys to join our team. If you are interested or know someone who would be, please contact Brock Peirce
0407236940.
Our netball teams are improving every week, with the girls all starting to gel together well. Again, we have lots of
new faces, so the first few weeks we are seeing lots of work going into working out our systems and combinations.
Our A grade scored an exciting win against Stanhope a couple of weeks ago, a really important 4 points. Sheree is
developing this young side, with very exciting times ahead.
Girgarre junior netball is also very exciting, with our 13&U having had some huge wins already. We also have had
our second 13&U team start their season in the Shepp Netball Association competition and we wish them luck.
Keep an eye on the Facebook page for weekly results of all of our football and netball teams.
Woolworths NetSetGO – is also running during term 2 with Sheree Starling once again our coordinator. Sheree runs
a fantastic program for our boys and girls aged 5-10, as they learn the foundational skills of netball and build on
these each week. Sessions are running Tuesdays 4.30 – 5.15pm, with the first session on 2 nd May. Again, please see
our Facebook page for further details and the registration link.
THURSDAY NIGHT MEALS – are open to all members and locals, meals generally about $15 for a great feed. Kids
meals also available. As mentioned above, we have had amazing numbers attending, so many people excited to be
back!! All welcome.
