GIRGARRE COMMUNITY NEWS 

Girgarre Community Cottage can help casuals access sick and carer’s pay. The Victorian Government is 

partnering with Neighbourhood Houses Victoria to make it easier to access the Victorian Sick Pay 

Guarantee. 

The Sick Pay Guarantee provides up to 38 hours a year of sick and carer's pay to eligible casual and 

contract workers in certain jobs. 

If you need help to sign up for the Sick Pay Guarantee – or if you know someone who needs help – get in 

touch with Girgarre Community Cottage on (03) 5854 6482. 

Workers can also sign up and claim the Sick Pay Guarantee online at vic.gov.au/sickpayguarantee or on 

the Service Victoria app.

Girgarre Football Netball Club 


Winning feels good doesn’t it!!! Our Senior footballers finally got that feeling 

again, and as a club weren’t we excited!! After a slow start we stepped up a 

gear and never looked back taking the game 10 goals to 5. The run home will 

be a tough one, playing three top 6 sides, however we will take it in our 

stride and put in full effort. The Reserves and Thirds also continue to work 

hard, with our Thirds still sitting in 6 th position, with a couple of must-win 

games ahead to guarantee a spot in the finals. 

Our A grade netballers had a tough game against Tally a couple of weeks 

ago, one we predicted we could have a fair chance to win, however we were rattled early and unfortunately 

just never got going. With Holly Nelson (Butler) only in her third game back after having her first baby, we look 

forward to improving further as she gets her game fitness back. The netballers have had some fun at training, 

with a buddy training and colour themed dress-up. It is great to see the bonding between our junior and senior 

netballers. 

Our juniors continue playing strong netball. Both of our 15s and 13s teams should make finals, with our 13&U 

KDL side undefeated and our 15&Us only having close losses. Our SNA 13&U side have managed a few wins too, 

but have made some great improvement. It was great to see a few extra supporters as our members cheered 

them on before making their way to Tallygaroopna late last month. 

80-90 people enjoyed a hilarious night when Andy Vening Hypnotist joined us. We saw a number of willing 

participants get up to be hypnotised and the ever-faithful Sharon Butler again not able to avoid going under. All 

provided the crowd with a great night of entertainment. We also recently welcomed our sponsors, patrons and 

life members to an afternoon to say thank you for everything they do to keep our club moving forward. Our 

Junior Scribble Party was also very well attended, with the younger members of the club having a great night. 

Well done to all involved. 

The next function we are busy planning for is the Ladies Day, the first one run in quite some time. We invite all 

of our ladies to get a table together, all 

welcome.

Greetings all, 


Once again, I hope this finds you happy and healthy. We continue to be busy here, there doesn’t ever 

seem to be much of a lull. If we are not working with people, it is programs, events or paper work! 

As you can see by the PSB ad (bottom left), this program is concluding at the end of August, so if you have not 

applied for the latest round please pop into The Cottage with a copy of your most recent electricity bill (all pages) 

and your bank account details and we will process this for you ASAP. 

We held our second Farmer’s Day last Friday in Stanhope and it was very successful with approximately 52 people 

in attendance. This event was a collaboration between Vic Police (Frank Scopelliti), Stanhope & District 

Development Committee and myself. We had speakers from; Vic Police Crime Prevention, Primary Care Connect, 

Rural Aid, Work Safe, Campaspe Shire Council-Flood Recovery Officers and Warren Davies “The Unbreakable 

Farmer”. We also had numerous information displays including the Vic Police Crime Prevention trailer and NE Rural 

Financial Counselling Service “AgBiz Assist”. I would like to acknowledge The National Centre for Famer Health who 

financially supported the Day and Fonterra for kindly donating the cheese and biscuits to keep people sustained. A 

huge thank you to Angelo for the superb catering with the 25 pizza’s, of which all were consumed bar 3, don’t 

worry they didn't go to waste. Finally, thank you to Donald who swept in at the last minute and saved us from a 

potentially horrific technical issue. Donald you are a life saver! 

Brad Allot from AgriClinic is conducting free health checks in Cooma on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. An 

AgriClinic is conducted by a qualified health clinician specialising in agricultural health and medicine and who is 

familiar with farming practices. 

They will assist you to: 

Understand your current health status and how to improve it. 

Learn how to keep you, your family and your workers safe. 

Identify on-farm risks and hazards. 

Obtain suitable personal protective equipment for your farm tasks

Girgarre Stanhope Land Protection Group 

Last Wednesday the Girgarre Stanhope Land Protection group had a perfect day for a tree planting working bee along the 

Girgarre Stanhope Rail Trail . 

15 volunteers from several community groups made short work of planting, guarding and watering 500 trees. Neighbouring 

Landcare groups members attended who had helped with the initial plantings in 2021 and 2022 , they were pleased to see the 

progress of our previous efforts.

Music - Just The Thing To Shake Off Those Winter Chills 

Winter is no deterrant to Girgarre’s Jigarre Jammers. They’ll rock in from all corners of Victoria for a day of heartwarming 

music, fun and friendship on Saturday August 26 th . The Jammers are convinced the best way to deal with 

a chilly winter is to play a lot of catchy tunes while singing with gusto. Well, who doesn’t find music spirit-lifting? 

Whether you have some musical ability, or pretty much none at all, the Jammers would love you to come and join 

them. The program is simple. Familiar songs, joyful in style are up on the screen, no expertise necessary. It’s the 

place to find someone to play along with or to polish up some old skills. 

Don’t let winter bite, come and shake it off with some up-lifting music. 

You’re welcome to bring along a favourite tune for a walk-up session 

too. Performing in front of a like-minded and appreciative audience 

is a great way to gain confidence. Singers are also welcome. The hall is 

well heated, open from 10 am for a 10.30 am start until a quick tidy and 

wrap up at 4 pm. You don’t need to bring music; we have it organised for 

you and there are skilled leaders to bump it along. B.Y.O food, tea and 

coffee, (BYO cup too) provided. Entry $5, kids free. Food is also available at the Gargarro Café on Winter road. 

September Camp Weekend. 

The second Jigarre Jammers camp for 2023 is coming up on the weekend of September 22 nd to the 24 th . The 

program will include open mic opportunities and a Saturday evening concert, plus a Sunday morning old-time 

gospel singalong. The fire pit out in the park is always very popular with the campers. Fees are $25 per person 

camping for the weekend. Saturday only visitors- the usual $5. The Sunday morning gospel is free for all. More

GIRGARRE AND DISTRICT OPEN GARDENS FESTIVAL 

Sunday October 22 nd , 2023 

Girgarre’s Open Garden Festival is shaping up to be a winner again this year. The festival, 

an annual fundraiser for the Girgarre community car and Friends of Gargarro Botanic 

Gardens, attracts visitors from near and far. Four beautifully presented gardens will be 

looking their best by Sunday 22 nd October. Early, seasonable rains and the expected 

warmer spring weather should ensure some lovely displays. 

Take your time to wander around the district and enjoy the local gardens before rounding off the day at Bernie 

Ryan’s ‘Bonshaw’. Harp music by Pete Gibson, plus an exhibition of ceramic birds by Ann Timms and flora demonstrations 

by Kyabram’s Fab Flowers will add a gentle ambience, colour, and interest as you explore the many and 

varied flower displays and art installations at Bonshaw. 

The Girgarre Primary School parents and friends will have sausages sizzling 

between 11-4 pm (in the grounds of Bonshaw), raising funds for the school 

and a high tea, presented by the Friends of the Gargarro Gardens will offer 

delicious finger sandwiches and other delicacies along with a cuppa served on 

fine china, between 2- 4pm at Bonshaw. Not to be missed. 

It’s a magic day, involving many members of the close-knit Girgarre community, 

all volunteers. They are to be applauded as they readily help with 

setting up, selling raffle tickets, or cooking the delectable home-made slices 

and biscuits for the afternoon tea. 

Pre-purchased entry tickets are $25 per person (children under 12 free), includes the high tea at Bonshaw. Numbers 

are capped at 350 visitors due to catering considerations. Tickets are not available on the day. The central hub 

for information, ticket and map pick-ups will be in the Gargarro botanical gardens precinct, near the nursery. Why 

not meander around the soundshell and gardens or the nursery while you wait for the 9.30am start time. Maybe 

buy a coffee or an early breakfast at the Gargarro cafe (bookings essential Ph: 0409 570 899).

The Bride 

It took a little while to untangle the bride’s lovely long dress from the Lincoln 

Continental. The music began to play the wedding song as the bride entered the church on her father’s arm and they started 

up the centre in a slow walk towards the groom. 

The bride remembered how they had met in the pub and she had fallen in love with him. The groom looked at the 

bride and felt his heart beat faster – as it did the first time he saw her across the bar. They could not take their eyes off each 

other. It was a wonder they even heard the priest and gave the right answers at the right time! Finally the priest said, “You 

may kiss the bride!” – and they were walking down the aisle as Mr and Mrs Smith for the first day of the rest of their lives. 

When they got to the outside door, Mrs Smith’s beautiful gown swirled around her feet and so she did not notice the 

step. She missed it and fell all the way down to the bottom! Mr Smith was shocked! It took him less than two seconds to get 

down there. He hugged and kissed her and asked if she was hurt. She said she was fine and that they had to get to the reception. 

Mr Smith lifted his new wife up off the ground and carried her to the car. 

Mr and Mrs Smith had a very wonderful time at their wedding party. 

She would tell him later where it hurt.

Backyard Misadventure 

Rusty, our small fox terrier dog, was a fabulous pet. We could do anything with him and he loved us very much. We had 

been playing dress-ups, with my sister – all of eight years, looking so grown up in high heels, handbag, the works – out walking 

and holding Rusty’s paw like he was a child. I can’t remember how, but in some way, poor Rusty ended up with his leg all 

entangled in our Barbie dolls’ miniature rotary Hills Hoist clothes line. 

Dad was trying to free the dog’s leg when Rusty struck out of fear, biting through the skin on his arm and hand. Mum 

insisted she clean it up but he wasn’t one to fuss over such things. Soon after, he came home from work not looking good, 

his skin colour grey. Mum called the doctors. He was admitted to Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital for a number of tests. 

Mum had to get a swab of saliva from Rusty. They found Ratsak in the sample! Dad was in Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital 

for a few weeks with blood poisoning – his condition so serious he had been given his last rites by a priest. 

My sister and I visited him a week before he came home. Dad had made friends with Ron – who was delighted that Dad 

had bought us to meet him. Ron lived in a room in what is called an iron lung. Very confronting! The man had polio so all you 

could see was his head. He said the iron lung helped him breath. Ron was a happy person and thanked us for visiting him. 

Early one day, Mum prepared a beautiful meal and went to the hospital to pick up Dad. We were so excited our Dad 

was home and well again after such a scare. Rusty our dog was in the backyard, and as they walked in, Dad stopped to give 

him a pat. He had forgiven him as he knew Rusty was frightened when he bit him. 

At last, all was well in our world as we enjoyed the lovely meal, happy to be together as our family again.

Old Man Roo 

Old Man Roo lay casually on his side, hidden by the dried summer grasses of the plain – perfectly still but for the occasional 

twitch of his ears listening to the sounds of activity only half a kilometre away. Roo was tired of the chase; 

he’d only narrowly avoided the two men as he bounded over the wire fence. Their dog had barked uncontrollably as 

Roo made his escape. Thank goodness it was on a lead or Roo would’ve been a goner! 

Damn! He could hear the pad, pad, pad of Wombat’s paws on the ground as he approached Roo’s hiding place. 

He was going to have to move again if Wombat gave him away. Roo was willing Wombat to change course but no such 

luck. Wombat stumbled right over Roo’s tail and rolled quite some distance before righting himself and returning to 

see what had so rudely tripped him up. Roo glared at Wombat. Wombat snuffled all around Roo’s tail and then sat 

upon the very tip and curled up into a ball for a quick nap! 

“Well! At least he’s not drawing further attention to this perfectly good position,” thought Roo. 

Then it happened! Kelpie was crashing through the bush, hot on Wombat’s trail! Roo had to make a quick decision: 

stay put and risk discovery, or create a diversion. With one mighty leap, he was off again, saving not only his skin 

but also Wombat’s. Roo jumped into the swiftly running river, swam to the opposite bank, and hoped Kelpie wouldn’t 

follow. 

The two men often told the tale of the eight-foot Old Man Roo that swam away – mighty thankful that Kelpie 

hadn’t cornered him and have all of them ripped to shreds by that unmatched muscular specimen of Australian fauna.
