Gut bedeutet in
diesem Zusammenhang allerdings nicht nur schön, sondern
auch inhaltsreich – manifestiert in einer überzeugenden Ge-
schichte. Storytelling ist das Zauberwort unserer Zunft. Gemein-
When I created Roman Klis Design, I had the dream of de-
sig ning brands, which make a difference to the life of many
people and to the appearance of the world. Today I believe
that each brand and each enterprise possesses this strength.
However, a good design is vital as a selling proposition in the
struggle for attention. Good however not only means in this
context beautiful, but also detailed – manifested in a convin-
cing story. Storytelling is the magic word of our guild. There-
fore, I search for the only true story together with my teams on
a daily basis. A story, which moves the heart, captivates and
thrills in perpetuity.
On this note, I wish you much pleasure reading and in particu-
lar when looking at this book. Let yourself also be captivated
and moved by our stories.
GESCHICHTE
walds entstanden innerhalb kürzester Zeit kreative Ideen in
arbeiter – Grafi kdesigner, Lithographen, Industriedesigner,
HISTORY
Roman Klis Design was founded by Roman Klis at the end of
1995 in the proximity of Herrenberg. Despite or perhaps be-
cause of the unusual location at the edge of the Black Forest,
creative ideas developed within the shortest time in the small
design thinktank. At the beginning of 1997, the agency won
the worldwide pitch for one of the ten most important food
brands – the Nescafé coffee brand. The fi rst big milestone in
the history of Roman Klis Design. Enterprises from all over the
world now became aware of the agency in the small, roman-
tic half-timbered town, south of Stuttgart. International cor-
porations, such as Procter & Gamble, Colgate Palmolive and
Bayer, but also medium-sized enterprises, such as the private
brewery Licher, Schladerer or Käfer Delicatessen became cu-
stomers of Roman Klis Design.
Much has happened since those days. The agency is one of
the fi rst addresses for brand design in Europe with customers
around the globe. Nowadays more than 60 permanently em-
ployed staff members and 15 freelancers – graphic designers,
lithographers, industrial designers, web designers, business
economists, architects and photographers – work in interdis-
ciplinary teams with much commitment and highest quality
pretensions for the success of customers and products. Be-
cause if they are successful, the agency is too. The passion for
their own profession is the motor to get to the point where
others are confronted with their limitations. Completely in
terms of the agency slogan:
ATLANTIS
ATLANTIS
The company headquarters of Roman Klis Design have been
located in Atlantis since 2004. For more than three years, Roman
Klis collected architectural ideas and impressions throughout
the whole world and realised them in this new concept of life
and work. The idea of an island of creative individuals develo-
ped – the Atlantis of the modern industrial and service society.
The building, which accommodates Zen style elements, plays
ingeniously with the elements air, light, and water. Water is the
focus of the architectural staging – symbol of the legendary
island of the same name. The architecture is based on per-
fect symmetry and the harmonious interaction of functionali-
ty, aesthetics, and emotion. Two gently curved wings hold a
three-story, fi ligree designed glass cube in their centre, which
serves as reception, conference room, cafeteria, and lounge.
Coming over a bridge one enters the light-fl ooded entrance
11
area, which has a soothing effect with its water refl ections. The
following terrace with its large sun sails immediately provides
for a relaxed atmosphere and is gladly used by all co-work-
ers for small breaks and for the creative exchange of ideas.
Passing islands made of paving stones the two wings of the
building are accessed with their offi ce spaces. A fl ight of wind-
ing stairs leads upward to both conference rooms and to the
roof terrace, which provides a marvellous view of the pictorial
landscape of the Schönbuch and Swabian Alb.
Beside Roman Klis Design, the renowned industrial design
agency frog design and the enterprise stoll & fi schbach eBusi-
ness, consulting and solution partners for digital communica-
tion, as well as brandplatform, creative professionals for adver-
tising and public relations have their headquarters in Atlantis.

Innovationskraft frei.
PERFORMANCE
Passion and the unconditional will to create added value by
design are the motors of the daily work of all creative individ-
uals at Roman Klis Design. This is the goal of each step. Enter-
prises, brands, and products are thereby regarded from the
viewpoint of the consumer. They should move, captivate, and
awaken desires. They should awaken fantasies and tell stories.
They should illustrate the needs and desires of the customer
and create confi dence.
For this purpose, the structures of the agency completely orient
themselves on the customer’s requirements, as well as their
brands or products. All design teams work interdiscipli nary and
with special industry know how. A Brand Champ, who pays
atten tion to maintaining the brand values, supervises each
design development. Each new design is developed in a pro-
cess of sophisticated evolution. Each design is well considered
and complies with the positioning of the brand. Furthermore,
new impulses and visions for the long-term development of a
brand evolve with a view to the future. This is one of the reasons
why we at Roman Klis Design occasionally like to think diffe-
rently and also realise a particularly high degree of innovation
during internal competitions.
13
The mixture is the secret: The work of Roman Klis Design is
distinguished by brand knowledge, love, and passion for
design as well as creativity and innovational strength. The
range of our services is thereby comprised of the following
spheres of competence:
CORPORATE DESIGN
15
Roman Klis Design looks after its customers during the devel-
opment and design of their company presentation from A to Z.
The corporate design with logo, house font as well as colour
and picture worlds are developed on the basis of the corpo-
rate mission statement and derived from this the application
guidelines for all means of communication – from the business
report over the website to the exhibition booth.
BRAND DESIGN
17
Roman Klis Design supports its customers with the develop-
ment and management of their brands. It is thereby extremely
important to consolidate the brand core and a brand char-
acter by shape, colour, and typography – in a nutshell: the
brand design. The suitable name gives the brand presentation
additional meaning. Nescafé, Maggi, Käfer, and AOK are only
some of the brands, which were developed or updated at
Roman Klis Design.
PACKAGING DESIGN
19
Packaging Design is the origin and most important compe-
tence area of Roman Klis Design. All other services offered
have developed from this point during the past years.
A suitable team is set up individually for each new packaging
project depending upon briefi ng and customer. Graphics,
structural and 3D design then all more or less come from one
source. This ensures that all projects are realised creatively,
comprehensively, on time and nevertheless cost-effi ciently –
from the launch or relaunch on a locally limited market up to
the international rollout of a brand.
INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
Beim Industrial Design steht die Gestaltung von Formen im
Mittelpunkt – täglich zum Beispiel an einzigartigen Parfüm-
flakons, Lebensmittelverpackungen mit besonderen Schließ-
mechanismen oder neuen Flaschentypen zu sehen. Dabei
berücksichtigen die Industriedesigner von Roman Klis Design
stets beides: Funktion und ästhetischen Mehrwert. Zur besseren
Anschauung werden Prototypen der entwickelten Designs in
den Modellbauwerkstätten ausgewählter Partner angefertigt.
21
The design of shapes is the focus of industrial design – to be
seen daily for example on a unique perfume fl acon, food pack-
aging with special closing devices or new bottle types. The
industrial designers of Roman Klis Design always consider both:
function and aesthetic added value. For a better visualisa tion,
prototypes of the developed designs are manufactured in the
model construction workshops of selected partners.
POS DESIGN
Der Kompetenzbereich POS Design umfasst bei Roman Klis
Design mehrere Designdisziplinen – Exhibition, Retail, Envi-
ronmental, Architecture und 3D. Dabei spielt das POS-Design
aktuell eine besonders wichtige Rolle. Denn am Point-of-Sale
treffen Produkt und Käufer aufeinander. Hier wird die fi nale
Kaufentscheidung getroffen.
23
The competence area POS Design at Roman Klis Design is
comprised of several design disciplines – Exhibition, Retail, En-
vironmental, Architecture and 3D. POS Design is current ly ex-
tremely important. Because the product and the cus tomers
meet at the Point-of-Sale. The fi nal purchase deci sion is made
here. A comprehensive design in terms of the brand is becom-
ing ever more important therefore and is often even crucial for
the brand success of a product.
FOTOGRAFIE
25
Roman Klis Design has its own photo studio, which can even
meet the most fastidious requirements. From layout shooting
up to the fi nal picture, designer and photographer work as
a team for a perfect result. Whether the milk foam on a cap-
puccino, the foam on freshly tapped beer, the hair model
for a colour rinse or a particularly beautiful apple for a baby
menu – Roman Klis Design has the right photographer for each
picture and also always the suitable stylists.
CORPORATE QUALITY
MANAGEMENT
„What you see is what you get“ ist täglicher Anspruch von
Roman Klis Design.
intensiv betreut.
27
“What you see is what you get” is the daily pretension of
Roman Klis Design. Therefore, an experienced production
team supports the creation and thus guarantees smooth im-
plementation, so that at the end of the day each result is fi rst-
class. All design developments are already examined for their
realisation possibilities before printing, suggestions for a fi rst-
class printing result are drawn up and all pre-press areas are
supervised intensively.
MEDIA DESIGN
29
Media Design is the logical continuation of the two compe-
tence areas Corporate and Brand Design. The image of an
enterprise or a brand is transferred to various media or devel-
oped further according to the media – in advertisements, on
banners, websites and much more.
DIE 10 INNOVATIONEN
Erfolgreiches Handeln setzt kompetente Planung, refl ek-
4 | CREATIVE SESSION
THE 10 INNOVATIONS
Successful activities presuppose competent planning, refl ect-
ing analysis, and detailed implementation. The 10 innovations
of Roman Klis Design are decisive in this process.
1 | THE SUPERMARKET
The Roman Klis Design supermarket with more than 75,000
prod ucts from all over the world is also updated and adapted
regularly. It is an absolutely creative oasis, if the issue concerns
special products and unusual packaging.
2 | BRAND SHOW ROOM
The products of some customers are presented at Roman Klis
Design in brand rooms, particularly established for this purpose.
In the Maggi Knorr room for example, all current products of
both competitors are exhibited. Therefore, the Maggi team of
the agency is always up-to-date and never loses the overview.
3 | HELIDAYS
Roman Klis Design periodically organises with and for custom-
ers the so-called Helidays. Far removed from the day-to-day
business, the cared for brands are viewed together with the
clients from the detached helicopter perspective. This creates
new impulses and visions for the future of a brand.
4 | CREATIVE SESSION
In regular intervals, Roman Klis Design invites its customers to
creative workshops at the premises of the agency. After an
as-is analysis and review of all relevant competitors, new ideas
and approaches are developed for the brand and its prod-
ucts. The results are summarised descriptively in a workshop
book, which is the basis and roadmap for the development
and realisation of future concepts during the course of the
project.
5 | PACKAGING TECHNOLOGY
Roman Klis Design employs a competent team of packaging
developers. Their specialised knowledge and the creativity of
the design teams allow packaging innovations to be created,
which comply to the special requirements of all customers
and which guarantee market success.
6 | PICTURE ARCHIVE
Apart from its own photo studio, Roman Klis Design has a pic-
ture archive, which in the meantime consists of more than
47,000 pictures. This enables many customers to get precisely
the pictures they require. Fast, uncomplicated and with the
perfect motif.
7 | TEST KITCHEN
The Roman Klis Design „Test kitchen“ is directly attached to
the photo studio and permits any kind of innovative cooking.
Particularly customers from the food industry appreciate this.
8 | S E T
The fast reaction force solves bottlenecks with their fully equipped
mobile design offi ce directly on-site at the customer or facilitates
complex coordination processes by their on-site presence.
9 | 3D STUDIO
Simple design sketches are modelled on the computer in the
3D studio of Roman Klis Design. Materiality, size and shape of
packaging, exhibition booths, giveaways and much more can
be presented vividly in this manner.
10 | ILLUSTRATION
Illustrations charge products emotionally, impart moods, and
provide a quickly detectable visualisation additionally to the
text. Roman Klis Design therefore cooperates with respectively
employs many professional illustrators, which are deployed
depending upon style for different brands and products.

Neue
ckungen.
About Roman Klis
I got to know Roman during my time in Hong Kong. After a
brief phone call, he spontaneously agreed to take a look at
our packages together with my team and me to see how he
could support us. This small occurrence already demonstrates
two of Roman’s most positive qualities. Firstly, his enthusiasm as
he agreed to fl y half-way round the globe overnight. And then
his commitment towards customers as he decided to appear
personally for the meeting. We worked together in both Tai-
wan and Pakistan after this fi rst meeting.
In my view, Roman Klis is a creative genius and yet never
ignores the economic aspects when developing ideas. He
possesses the amazing ability to listen and to understand his
customers. For this reason also, working with him is a pleasure
and time and again an adventure full of new discoveries.

In diesem Sinne alles Gute,
About Roman Klis
I met Roman Klis for the fi rst time in 1994, when he applied
for his dream job at that time as an automobile designer at
Daimler Benz AG in Sindelfi ngen. Nobody could have assu-
med that a close friendship would soon develop from our fi rst
meeting. I was particularly impressed by his determination and
positive attitude to his life and his surroundings. His strengths
are his extensive creative talents: Understanding both shape
and colour and to design with these elements as well as to
express ideas in words and to consistently realise them. With
his future-orientated view of life and his imperturbable energy,
he is also able to enthuse and motivate others. Roman Klis is
however not only an outstanding designer, but above all also
an entrepreneur, who has successfully followed his ambitions.
A person with strong leadership qualities has emerged from
the determined young man of those days – who himself leads
an excellent creative team.
In this respect all the best,
kennen gelernt.
Und „last but
arbeit. Vielen Dank für 12 Jahre begeisterte Freundschaft!
About Roman Klis
I already became acquainted with Roman Klis as a young
designer ten years ago. We started talking over a few glasses
of red wine at the Starnberger Lake. It is very easy to explain
why he manages Germany’s largest and I feel best corporate
and packaging design agency today. Roman Klis combines
three core virtues in one person, which a modern designer
must have apart from his handicraft, in order to be successful.
He is an extremely curious person, which makes him a source
for creative ideas. In addition, he is also Swabian enough, in
order to realise that these ideas only have a chance to be
realised, if they are effi cient in terms of his customer’s market-
ing strategy. In addition, „last but not least“ he has realised
that it is only possible to make people enthusiastic about his
ideas if he himself is capable of being enthusiastic. Many
designers have some of these virtues, but all from them united
in one person is very seldom.
Dear Roman thanks for 12 years of inspiring cooperation. Many
thanks for 12 years of inspiring friendship!

The “Juhu” story & how everything began
Once upon a time, there was a good friend, who wanted to
introduce me to an acquaintance. After considerable urging
on his part I conceded and that is how the up to this time
unknown “Juhu” came to Zell am See. My fi rst impression as
Klisi came around the corner: A black Shaolin monk is fi nally
coming into my life. But it was even better: I am fascinated by
your pronounced child in man attitude and I hope that you
never become grown-up! As Pippi Langstrumpf, Max & Moritz,
and also Pumuckl have already shown us: children can also
have a career! Nevertheless, always retain your constant am-
bition for advancement! You are impudent, self-assured, an
interesting character and can charm with your positive
attitude! If this should not be once the case one day, then luck
is still on your side. Since you are known to have a preference
for the beautiful things in life, I wish you health, because you
already possess so many other things. Both our lives were posi-
tively affected by becoming acquainted and we both profi t
from this. That is a good thing.
