One Day in Ancient Greece
A SCHOOL INTERACTIVE PROJECT ON ANCIENT GREEK
LIFE
2MD MODEL EXPERIMENTAL GYMNASIUM OF ATHENS

One morning in Plaka…
Students of the A5 class experienced what life was
like in the 5 th century B.C. through an interactive
programme organized by the agency ‘δρώ’. Ancient
life was transferred in simulated environments
where students participated in daily activities and
produced artwork and craftwork. To be more
specific, the Ancient ‘Agora’, Pnyka, The Parthenon
and Kerameikos were settings where students were
introduced in the Ancient Greek way of life in an
amusing, creative and interactive way.

Students learnt about garments…
Women in Doric cities
were more conservative
in style but, in Ionic
cities, sleeves were short
and almost did not exist.
Men were wearing an
inner robe tied with
‘porpi’ , a kind of buckle.

In the Athens around 5 B.C….
People would send
anyone considered a
treat for Democracy
away from the city-state.
Somebody would be an
outcast after having
received 6000 votes
against him.
In Pnyka, every ten days,
there was a public
Assembly to take
decisions about the citystate.

We were divided in teams…
We were asked to form
teams in order to decide
about a city wall that had
to be built. In our
simulated Assembly, we
finally agreed to build a
stone wall to protect the
city without damaging
the environment. Time
was estimated with the
use of ‘a clepsydra’, a
sand-clock.

We saw temples and we
learnt how materials
were transferred to build
the Parthenon.
As architects…

We sold several cereals,
vegetables as well as
fruits. We used pottery
pots and weights ‘varidia’
in ancient time scales.
We checked quality as
well as quantity.
We traded products
exchanging coins from
different areas.
As traders…

We talked about various
professions of the time
and we tried working on
copper leaves and pottery
design.
We also discussed the
professions of:
scribes,
educators/‘paidotrives’
musicians ‘kitharistes’
As for professions…
